Burnley Barnsley similarities as football clubs and as towns
Names sound similar as we all well know.
Both similar sized clubs in my eyes.
Populations basically identical.
Both full of working class people.
Both pretty deprived towns.
Stadium capacity’s almost identical.
Both rooted in industrial heritage (coalmines & textiles)
Both surrounded by a lot bigger footballing city’s.
They get similar crowds to what we did in the Championship pre first Premierleague promotion.
We have won more in our history but we are definitely similar sized clubs in terms of fan base and the identity of the town.
UP THE TYKES & UP THE BURNSLEY

If size of club is based only on attendances and population of town/city then yeah we're similar sized. If it's based on football achievements it's not even close.

What an entirely pointless thread.
Re: Burnley Barnsley similarities as football clubs and as towns
We have spent 59 of the last 123 years in the top flight of English football, Barnsley have spent 1 season there.
We're actually ahead of Forest, Leeds, Leicester, PNE, Southampton.

Re: Burnley Barnsley similarities as football clubs and as towns
Not really
I've thought about this in the past and it can do nothing more than make us proud about our status now and history
Blackburn,Preston,Bolton, Blackpool all much bigger towns but which of the Lancashire clubs has a better résumé than ours in regards to honours and time spent in the top tier of English football
Blackburn will run us close but it will be damn close

Preston is now a city, yet they still show no sign of making it to the PL anytime soon do they.CBT wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 10:29 pmNot really

And apart from that brief period in the 90's when they bought the title with Jack Walker's money, most of Rovers triumphs are decades ago.
So compared to our neighbours we fare pretty well in terms of success I agree.

Judging by the replies that simply isn’t true even if nobody replied it still wouldn’t be true whoever started the thread felt it needed posting, it’s not wise to disregard peoples opinions if you don’t agree.

Re: Burnley Barnsley similarities as football clubs and as towns
The Barnsley comparison as the town goes is pretty fair. Some noticeable demographic differences due to the nature of now extinct industries but both towns not as bad as made out and surrounded by lovely countryside.
As for football, it’s curious they’ve never really had the success we’ve had, although not quite plumbed the depths we have either. Huddersfield Town are a very similar club, honours-wise. Used to have a pretty much identical ground too.
Personally I’d like to see both back in the top flight. More northern town teams up there (apart from them down the road) and less new-money Southern plastic arena bowl clubs.

I've been watching a lot of television recently. Aren't Salford the second biggest side in Lancashire, followed by Liverpool and man United women?

To be fair, Barnsley is closer to Man City and Man United than we are to either Merseyside club.

Main things I think about when I think of Barnsley…
Dickie Bird, Michael Parkinson and the Chuckle Brothers. Decent away end, half decent pie (if memory serves) and they have/had a cartoon dog for their club badge.

Re: Burnley Barnsley similarities as football clubs and as towns
Absolutely, we’re similar towns. But we have vastly over-achieved where they have more or less lived up to their reputation, football wise. And therein lies the beauty of beauty of Burnley Football Club.

Barnsley are one of the clubs I like to see do well. Proper northern club from an old industrial town.
