Burnley have once again opened talks to try and sign Rotherham United ace Ben Wiles. #twitterclarets #UTC #EFL #RUFC

Local lad and captained them the other week.
There appears to be a belief he has what it takes though to step up

Do we think the cash is running out as we search for the missing bits of the squad jigsaw in the next9 days or so. If not what do we think is left in the pot to spend

We're gonna be a team of midgets. We seriously lack some height.

I think we will see one more player leave and whatever we get from that player will be used to sign a striker and CB

3 technically.
Rotherham have been yoyo-ing for the last 5-6 years, so he's had 3 seasons in the championship and 2 in league one.
The step up part is on about going up into the PL, but he just needs to transfer to a club more capable of doing that.

No I don't think the cash is running out, more like the club is being sensible with their spending instead of spaffing it all away on a couple of players.
Yes I know some on here want the big money, flashy signings as they believe that's a real sign of determination/statement from the club, but that's just laughable.

We've gone up spending virtually nothing before now.
Some people just like seeing big wedges of money spent on a single player, that's their mindset.

Surely it’s all comparative though?
Just as spending millions isn’t sustainable, selling all your top talent isn’t sustainable either.
I think fans can rightly expect at least marquee signing to show intent.

The fans expect to see a team rebuilt and to be competitive.
A section of fans will want big money signings but that's because of their mindset.
The rest would settle for competitive regardless of budget.
Would you rather sign the next Ivan Toney for £5 million plus add-ons,, or even the next Danny Ings for £1 million, or would you rather see more spent on a player for similar or less return?

All relative in my mind. If my target is promotion this season or next then you sign a top striker for the required money.
If your planning on building a competitive team for the championship over five years then you go for the cheap option

As Barry Kilby would say-"lets not bet the ranch". Sound advice at the time. No sensible claret would expect to see that today-me included. However we might need to start fishing in a different pond as it is appearing obvious that we desperately need an experienced and athletic centre half-if any doubt look at the amount of attacks the opposition has had in our first 5 games and the percentage of goals as a result. We also need a striker with a goal scoring record. By contrast, to prove my point, look at our goal attempts in those 5 games and the ratio of goals we have completed. Of course another option is additional loans, where we have proved this season you can go very high quality but no initial outlay

Yes, if we are to get European football in 5 seasons we need to get promoted sooner rather than later.

Cullen if fit will likely play most if not all of our 46 league games, he's too integral to the system to be dropped or rested.
.... or suspended. He's got two yellows already and looks capable of earning quite a few more.

Bidding for the 2 Metz players and for the Rotherham lad so should be at least about 10mio in the transfer kitty still to spend. A striker, a CB and a central mid and then the squad looks ready for a top 6 finnish.

Our model is picking players up for cheap and selling them on for profits - Wiles with one year left on his contract comes cheaper than he would if he signed a new three year deal with Rotherham , one good season with us and his price could double/treble for example.

I'm glad somebody understands our new model, unfortunately this new approach seems to have flown over a few posters heads, and they expect us to be splashing out 10-15m on a single player, which would be a mighty big gamble, and one thankfully the club are astute enough not to be risking at this stage.
Get this Rotherham lad on a 3/4 year deal, and if he impresses for us in the Championship there's every chance we'll be able to move him on for decent money next summer, whether we get promoted or not this has to be our long term strategy as a club.

I’m not a huge fan of Barnes by any means but I’d rather have his honesty, hard work, personality and experience than waste money on any of those three. They aren’t going to bring any more of a consistent goal threat than him either IMO.

If it got to the last few hours of the window and we still hadn't brought a striker in I'd definitely take Grabban on a 12 month deal. Just about anybody would be an upgrade on Barnes at present.

His what now?
Not in the sense of his diving, in the sense of he doesn’t hide in games. He keeps showing for the ball and trying. Even if it isn’t working. As I say I’m not his biggest fan and never have been, but he rarely hides however bad its going.
