How do you even find them? Every journey I've searched for is coming up full price

As a youngster I lived at Cowgill (Dent Youth Hostel) for a few years. The railway line was high up above us on the hillside, I can still remember the old steamers rattling along. Anyway for those fancying the Settle -Carlisle it’s well worth it. You really could do with the weather being kind to you that day as some of the views are well worth the journey.

I took advantage of the 1 pound journeys a couple of years ago on the Settle to Carlisle route.

Unfortunately it never turned out to be the nice family day out it should have been.

We drove to Bingley to try and get a seat as you can't pre book.
A two carriage train turned up with one carriage full and the other half full. The 2nd carriage had reserved signs on all the tables and when we got to Settle, the private group got on and everyone who was sat in the carriage got moved to the other already full carriage.
I spent the journey stood up not being able to see the views.
We got back to the return journey early and they added another 3 carriages. So got seats.
Unfortunately another goods train broke down on the track and with it being a single track, blocked the line for 4 hours.
Our return was in the dark so I missed most of the views.

What do you expect for a quid :D :D

We had similar when we used them and went to Chester for the day/night. Luckily the journey started at Blackpool so we got a seat but once it got to Preston it was rammed until we changed at Manchester.

When we did the journey I was slightly disappointed, as when you go over the viaduct we were expecting spectacular views but we weren't really aware that we were on it, as you can't see the ground.

That's exactly the case, you're better off parking next to it and watching a train go over, particularly if it's Flying Scotsman or Mallard.

It's basically a publicity stunt from Northern Rail to get traffic to their website and get people booking during the quietest time of the year. I got skipton to carlisle tickets last year for 50p each way for me and the Mrs (£2.00 total), which was a great day out for the money, but it took ages to find a suitable 50p deal departing from a local station. Did same Accy to York and Accy to Leeds in previous years. Problem is you have to search every date and destination to find the 50p ones and scroll through all options and prices. You have to be flexible on date, time, where you depart from and go to, then book the offer before someone else grabs it as they go quick. It takes ages to find them now and the banners and Instagram bio links intentionally just take you to the standard booking page, so you have to spend hours to find the flash sale ones one by one. If you can find one, can be bothered and have time to search and be flexible, then it's worth it for a day out somewhere but they have made it harder to find them and I've given up this time as couldn't find anything between 17th Jan and 10th March (the period for which the offer is based on). Hope that helps.

That surprises me. Loads of long distance views, Pen y ghent, Garsdale, Dentdale, Whernside and Ingleborough, Aisgill Summit to name a few, before dropping down into the Eden Valley.

Hi. Perhaps I stamped your youth hostel card. ;) I’m struggling to provide an actual year, I attended cowgill/ dent school so I’m thinking it was around 1960/62 I know there was no electricity at the hostel and we relied on calor gas cylinders, cooking was done on a coal fired Aga. My parents were the wardens there. We then moved to Burley in Wharfedale youth Hostel, a few years later we took on Malham youth hostel and lived there for a number of years.

Just missed me beddie... I was there often between 64 and 66. But what a absolutely wonderful place it was. Every evening we'd walk up to the viaduct and up the side onto the bridge itself..then back down to the kitchen for a hefty supper. Dents always been the real hidden gem of the dales for me.

My mate works in some kind of water testing lab. He said they were sent a sample from a spring that had been discovered on a farm in Dent. Once the water was tested and registered, that farm became Dent brewery, and they only ever use water from the spring.
