Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
Didn't want to sign for Burnley but in the meeting with Waddle had around 15 pints of Guinness and signed.
Training facilities were awful, tried to embrace the club but never wanted to be here.
Signed a 3 year deal, £1,200 per week and £16,000 signing on fee.
Changing room was a mess, all the players didn't like Roeder or Waddle.
Had a team meeting after losing 2-1 at York and Paul Barnes went crazy at the team and management.
Glen Little a big character in the dressing room but didn't like Roeder and this caused issues in the dressing room.
Bringing Glen Little into the team was the reason we survived that season.
The players we had weren't suited to the style Waddle wanted to play.
Howey became the figurehead for everything wrong at the club and the fans hated him.
Northampton away Howey played up front and Andy Cooke was dropped, missed a header in front of Burnley fans and they started spitting at him.
Has a thick skin but the abuse really got to him.
Didn't gel with the players, wasn't a drinking culture, he lived near Harrogate and other players were living around Manchester so couldn't socialise and get with the group.
Soon as training was finished every just left and went home, no socialising.
In his Burnley career probably played well in just 5 or 6 games.
Stan came in and first day and told all the players how sh*t they were, asked can anyone take a long throw in, one of the players said "yes, I can", Stan replied "right, you're in my team, the rest of you I'll make my mind up".
Had left Harrogate and moved back to Sunderland and so was travelling from Sunderland each day for training, Stan made him move closer so he moved in with Glen Little.
Howey feels he was a good pro, worked hard.
Bury in the cup he was injured and couldn't play, Stan begged him to play in the game.
York at home, Howey was injured but played because Stan asked, just before half time we got a throw in and Stan shouted at Howey to get forward, Howey shouted back that he was knackered and couldn't do it, Stan kept shouting so Howey told him to F*ck off. Went in at half time and he was sat between Brotherwick and Winstanley, Stan comes into the dressing room and shouts at him "Never f*cking speak to me like that, anyway you're f*cking sacked." Howey replied "f*cking good" and ripped his shirt off.
Went into the shower and heard Stan say "and you're sacked and you'll never play for the club again" Howey not being in the room didn't know who at the time but then learnt it was Blatherwick and Winstanley who were sat next to Howey and their response was "what have we done wrong?"
Sam Ellis called him after the game and said to come in the next day for a running session, then had a meeting with Stan who said he would never play for Burnley again, Howey said fine but you'll need to sell me as I have a year and half left on my contract. Stan remarked how much the club had paid him already for little return but Howey didn't care and wanted paying as his contract entitled him to it.
Turned up for training but was told he was not training with the team, he had to wait until training finished to do some running with Mick Doherty.
3 weeks later, Stoke wanted Howey but Stan told Stoke to f*ck off and made Howey stay to make him run and wouldn't let him leave. Howey was fuming about it and hates Stan. Really got on with Mick Doherty and Mick didn't want to make him run but had to because of Stan.
Deal agreed with Northampton, Burnley owed Howey £20,000 but Stan wouldn't pay him the money, Howey said he would come back to training the next day then, Stan slammed the phone down, half hour later club secretary called back to say they are trying to do a deal with the chairman, Howey remarked he wanted all the money or he wouldn't go. Secretary then called back in tears because she relayed the message to Stan who became very horrible with her. Did a deal for £20,000 minus tax which was £12,000.
Howey felt if he stayed he would have killed him as he absolutely hated his guts. Howey spoke with Peter Swann who said it was the plan all along to get rid of Howey and free up the wages to bring Peter Swann in to the club.
Last game of the season Northampton played Burnley and Howey scored for Northampton and it is one of his favourite goals in his career.
Stan's book where he spoke about the radio/sacking incident is all a pack of lies and none of it about the story is true.

Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
I've heard a few things about Stan that would get you sacked for bullying if it happened in other workplaces.
Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
Absolutely. I loved him but some of the behaviour back then in football was a world away from what’s acceptable now.

Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
Stan is a big part of our history for sure.
He got us promoted to the championship for the first time in years and a couple of great 7th place finishes in our first 2 seasons. Bearing in mind we have never been below championship level since then and the difference in finances between championship and the 2 divisions below what Stan did was important to where we are now.
But no question about it Stan was a horrible bloke and as said a massive bully. He’s just not a nice person and for whatever reason an angry little man.

Be careful giving an opinion on Stan, one of his family members might wish to inform you that they’re taking legal action against you. Happened to me on Clarets Mad in 2002 when I was 15!
Definitely no smoke without fire on the stories heard over the years. Cracking manager for us, nonetheless. Dread to think where we’d be without his efforts for Burnley.

Regardless of the sob stories, Howey was utter crap whether under Waddle or Stan. Even if the training facilities were awful, crack on.

Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
I never rated Howey - I suspect he somehow impressed Waddle during his sojourn there in the season before he took over here. 250k or whatever it was was crazy money to be spending on someone with little pedigree and - by his own admission - dodgy knees.
He got found out quickly, but don't blame him for sticking to his guns about his contract. His book is definitely worth a read, but it's a shame he doesn't go into detail as to why he hates his brother so much ...!

Lee Howey played like he was p***ed most of the time, the biggest come down ever when waddle signed all these great players we was shocking. I remember watching that Macclesfield game we won on a Sunday at home I remember feeling if we lost that we was down. Luckily won it 4-2 I think but it went one way then the other all afternoon.

It was even closer than I thought I remember it being one of the most nerve wrecking games I’ve ever watched us play.i wasn’t sure howey played or not.One things for sure we had some shocking centre half’s around that era.
Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
Signed after 15 pints of Guinness
Training facilities were awful
There wasn't a drinking culture at the club
He lived near Harrogate, the other players mostly lived near Manchester so rarely saw them outside of training therefore didn't socialise with them....
Cry me a river you poor hard done to soul, honestly they're so pampered they just don't get it.

Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
He'd left us around six months before that game but it was nerve wrecking
Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
There's no doubt that Stan had his favourite players and Howey certainly sounds bitter about his dealings with him. It's a strange conversation though. On one hand you've got Howey saying he was a professional, that he wanted to play football and he was committed (playing with injuries etc) and on the other he was on a bender for the last couple of months after being given the sack by Stan. Hardly a pro.
For context on Stan. Kevin Ball has been on the same Podcast and he describes Stan as a genius and how much he adored him. Everyone worked their socks off, junior or senior pros alike. Sounds like there were plenty of fall outs but that was the way Stan was.

Re: Lee Howey - Undr the Cosh (Spoilers)
The problem with Lee Howey was that he was a terrible footballer - pretty simple really.

Under the cosh have just done Simon garner also. But it’s on the Patreon service costs £3 a month.still denies any involvement in the plane flying over but knows the people who did it.When asked if he ever had a run in with Burnley fans,he said he walked out the turf after a match for West Brom and a Burnley fan was waiting with a carving knife and asked garner when will Simon garner be out.Garner replied in a minute! He didn’t recognise him
