sheffield rules
Following on from another thread on offside etc, came across this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield_Rules These are the rules football was played under in Sheffield from the 1850s, coexisting for a while with the FA rules but eventually merged. No offside, and another whose reintroduction mig...

Re: Villa 3rd Goal Offside
This is like the old 'You are the Ref' in Shoot! What happens if an attacking player handles the ball and it goes in off a defender? And, for offside, if a player off the pitch 'must be considered to be on the nearest boundary line', then where on the nearest boundary line? And why not where they le...

Re: Villa 3rd Goal Offside
Foshiznik--thanks for this. I did have a look at the law but lost the will to live half way through. Would be interesting to know if McBurnie realised this. And if Walker didn't. And, even though it was the correct decision, whether this actually was the reason it was not given offside. The old offs...

Re: Villa 3rd Goal Offside
Like others, I was surprised not much was made of this. On the Man City goal at Sheffield, it was mentioned (briefly) that McBurnie was played onside by Kyle Walker, who up against the advertising boards at this point. I suppose his position is taken to be at the point where he left the playing area...

Goalkeepers often don't come out very well from edited highlights of games, but I did wonder how we got Mellor in the first place. He came from Witton Albion (have just looked this up) who were in something like the Cheshire League. Was there a personal connection?

Great article, and am looking forward to the rest.
Just one thing. I don't think Jack Yates was the only player to suffer the fate of scoring a hat-trick in their first game for England and then never playing for them again:

At the risk of increasing their angst, I think Spiral has raised an important issue.
If I am reading this right, if a shot is on target but is blocked it is not on target, but if a shot not on target is saved by the goalkeeper it is on target.

This was a Tuesday night game. Looking at the results on here, we lost 2-0. The worst kind of 2-0 as well. 1972 seems more likely, which is when Banks had his serious injury. Also (not from memory) 1972 was when Jeff Blockley got his one cap and Frank Lampard got the first of his two. Interesting to see Howard Kendall on there, who many saw as England's best uncapped player of the time.
