NFL playoffs

Post by minnieclaret » Tue Jan 18, 2022 7:03 pm

Not a great wild card weekend. 4 blow-outs and only one great game but what a game.
Dallas letting the clock run out after a QB run with no time-outs remaining. Gifting the win to the 49ers. Being a Washington fan this brought me much pleasure.
The four divisional matches this weekend offer promise of much closer finishes.

Results:
raiders 19–26 BENGALS
patriots 17-47 BILLS
eagles 15-31 BUCCANEERS
49ERS 23-17 cowboys
steelers 21-34 CHIEFS
cardinals 11-34 RAMS

At least 3 potentially great games there. San Fran will test Packers. Rams will give Brady all he can handle and Bills v Chiefs is anybody’s guess
Go Bucs

The Cowboy offense is so good on paper, just hasn't clicked all season long. I'm surprised the Rams blew out the Cardinals, it was the other way around earlier in the season, was Murray missing?

Gonna be a great end to the play offs, I think Rams finally have a QB to go all the way if they keep Donald, Ramsey and Cooper fit. You can never write off Brady or Mahomes. Derrick Henry returns for the Titans, Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay are probably the favourites, Joe Burrow is a star in the making for the Bengals.

I really fancy the Rams, Cooper Kupp been the MVP WR in the league, Stafford doesn't have the play off experience but he's very very good.

Only game I’ve ever watched in person was a home game for The Bengals on a work trip to Cincinnati many years ago. It doesn’t feel like they’ve done anything since. I would love them to make the Super Bowl but it seems unlikely going off the comments of those of you who watch the game regularly.

Bucs fan here...unlikely we will repeat last season's success, but you've got to be in it to win it! :-)
(It's great they've won SB after years of being dreadful...much like being a Claret!)

Rams for me as well. They are so strong in defense with Aaron Donald, Von Miller and Jalen Ramsey. Cooper Kupp has almost 2000 yards and 16 touchdowns and Matt Stafford finds him with regularity.

Rams to edge Buffalo in the Superbowl

Murray played, very poorly, QB rating of 40, which is the lowest I’ve ever seen. To be fair to him their bad run started after DeAndre Hopkins was ruled out for the season 7 weeks ago.
The Phoenix from the flames for the Rams has been Odell Beckham, finally looking again like the player he promised to be.
Really up for next weekend. All four matches to close to call for me. Not shouting for any of them I can just sit back and enjoy.

D Hop being out makes sense for the score, knew they had to be missing one of their big hitters

Well it is definitely a possible. On a good day they can beat anybody - but then a week later they won't turn up against a poor team.
They only need to string a couple of results together. Can the titans lock Chase down?
It has been a slightly odd season where some of the underperforming teams have occasionally got things right leading to really unexpected wins for the jags, lions, jets, texans.
Re the dallas comment above, they have a decent offence v the nfc east. That's not saying too much.
Can't follow why the texans coach was binned. He won 4 games - probably 3 or 4 more than expected and put up a fight in a lot more. Only on a par with Watford, that one.

Not as outrageous as Dolphins firing Brian Flores with a winning record. They have since covered up by saying it wasn’t down to results but his lack of input with the suits behind him.
He is being interviewed for the Bears job so good luck to him.

As a fins fan this came as a shock. Allegedly the owners suggested Flores had spent months trying to get Watson in at QB, and that he fell out with staff and players regularly - but to me, they seemed to play for him. Our D was up there with the best the last 5 or 6 games

As for this weekend, I've a tenner on Rams, Bengals, Chiefs and Packers (15/1)

That's not true at all, on paper Dallas have one of the best offences in the entire NFL.

In making a point you’ve agreed with his point. Their stats are padded heavily by the division they’re in. Put the Cowboys in the NFC West and they’d go 0-6.

Thought the Rams put on a great performance against the Cardinals and have done well in recent matches against the Buccs which should give them hope.
Bill's looking good too and Allen has everything but will be tough against the Chiefs.
Wide open this season but a winner from the NFC for me.

Falcons maybe next year 😁

Hahahahahaha. Look at all you sad individuals fawning over the NFL playoffs.

Have you still not got it yet? Nobody cares!!!!!

Can't believe you think that winning the "Super"bowl means something.

Everyone knows it is all about getting the number 1 draft pick!

I felt like their offence never really clicked though and showed it's full potential. On paper it should've been so much better.

It did last year until Prescott got injured. But like our forward line, their o-line is beginning to show its age, and I doubt Martin and Prescott are back to 100%.
On your other point, arizona have been below par for weeks. Hopkins has been a big loss, but they tank most years end of season.

So, jags fan, who are you picking in the draft? One of the two DE's I presume.

My first year in the US was 1992. In the middle of nowhere, we had a giant aerial mast on our roof, which I could turn (by hand) to point different directions towards different cities tv stations. On Sundays we’d point at Tampa about 60 miles away so we could watch some football. They went 1-15 with Vinny Testaverde as QB.

So, those were the even more dreadful years!

BENGALS 19-16 Titans
Last kick field goal sees Bengals through to the Divisional Championship. Massive defensive battle with winning QB Joe Burrow sacked 9 times but Tannehill being intercepted 3 times was the decisive factor.

Enjoyed those games. Always nice to see the Packers blow up!

That will be it for Green Bay now, massive rebuild ahead and very much doubt Rodgers will be a part of that.

Really enjoying the NFL this season. Sky's coverage of a lot of things has nosedived in quality but Neil Reynolds is top drawer. Great to see the Bengals doing well. To say how commercialised the US is they also understand that proper competition is good for the game with the worst teams then getting the first draft picks. Makes it far more interesting and not predictable each season. Football could learn a lot from that. People really are getting tired of the same teams dominating.

Spot on.

The way the NFL works is brilliant.

The popularity of the NFL has rocketed in the UK over the last few years. It does take a long time to fully understand the game and it’s nuances, which understandably puts a lot of people off. It’s not the sort of sport you could catch a few minutes of and it catch your interest.

If you give it a proper chance you will realise the NFL is up there with the best competitions in sport!

I fancied the Bengals, though to win on the road after Burrow being sacked 9 times shows they're a solid team throughout

Not sure it says that about their on-line. Let's see who they get in the championship game. Rams in the sbowl might be a problem with their front 4.

The salary that Rodgers is due to get next season will mean that he is likely to stay, I'd have thought.
My guess is that he tries to lie low this off season as the packers hierarchy try to get him to extend and restructure his contract.
I'm not sure how much dead money they would be hit by if they cut him. It's a contract only a team that could create massive cap space would want to take on - which rules out a lot of would-be suitors.
Interesting few months ahead. Jeopardy can wait for a year...

Yeah fair point about the O line but then the fact they've managed to beat the Titans in their own ground shows they've got enough elsewhere, and to be honest they've proven that all season after people questioned why they didn't take Sewell in the draft. Rams should be a problem for any team - I've got them to beat the Buccs

The $46m salary he’s due could be the reason he leaves. Adams is a free agent and wants to be the highest paid WR. Others are free agents and their salary cap is roundabout Rodgers salary. Major rebuild due and Rodgers wants another superbowl shot. I think he’ll leave.

The $46m salary he’s due could be the reason he leaves. Adams is a free agent and wants to be the highest paid WR. Others are free agents and their salary cap is roundabout Rodgers salary. Major rebuild due and Rodgers wants another superbowl shot. I think he’ll leave.
The question has to be whether he will ever be good enough to get a Superbowl shot. For years and years he's been regular season MVP, but post season, when you're looking for the man who can win the game, don't look at Rodgers.

KC v BB has to be the greatest last two minutes ever. Anybody that hasn’t seen it try and catch the highlights package.

It’s on the BBC NFL page. That is an incredible weekend of games. Got to think KC with Mahomes will be the favs now.

Huge outcry here about NFL OT rules. Currently it’s a bit like a penalty shootout where if first team scores it’s all over !
For those not up on the rules. They toss a coin for possession. If first team gets a td it’s game over. If theY only get a field goal Then second team gets a chance to score a td. If they do they win. If they only get a fg then next score wins. Crazy

I’ve never understood that rule but the Americans are happy to accept it. Both teams should always get the ball for me.

Just finished watching the last of the play-off matches.

When I thought they couldn't get any better (after the Bengals/Titans, 49ers/Packers and Rams/Bucs crazy games) we then get the Chiefs/Bills insane finish.

If you don't get the NFL, could I just point you in the direction of any of the games this last weekend. The strategies, tension and the way that the way the clock factor makes for a fantastic spectacle. You just have to get over the stop-start nature of the game and accept that, actually, much of it is an important aspect of the game itself.

Just amazing. The previous weekend was poor (to be fair) in terms of drama but this weekend...........

I'm not going to mention the outcome of any of the games in case some haven't watched but that Chiefs/Bills was something else. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes...unbelievable QBs. Hoping Mac Jones from (my team) the Pats comes good and there will be a rivalry in the AFC for years like nothing else

Of all major sports, the NFL seems to have the highest proportion of good quality, exciting games.

Bills - Chiefs last night was unbelievable!
