Jay Rod
Jay Rod
His big chance last night especially with Foster suspended to try and stake a claim in the starting 11, unbelievably poor, starting in the Salford team would be about his level now and looked like the frustration of knowing you haven't got it anymore got to him towards the end.
Shouldn't get any premier league minutes for us this season

Re: Jay Rod
Wasn't that the way Barnes felt after a game early last season? Jay remains a season pro who can play a role if we're defending a lead and want fresh legs to allow another player to rest. If VK puts him on instead of Odobert there's probably a good reason.

I thought of Barnes, who couldn’t hit barn door at one point then turned it around and proved a lot wrong (including me)
I find it a bit disrespectful but maybe that’s the hometown boy sentiment, I’ll certainly not be one to call his time.

Re: Jay Rod
Missed a few this season that previously he would have buried without a thought.
Its hard to see what he's giving us right now.

I think that "hometown boy" role is great to have in the dressing room, it keeps the connection with the town and the fans as we bring in loads of players from overseas. Obviously that's not enough to deserve a chance to pull on the shirt but it's something that only JayRod brings.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 7:30 amI thought of Barnes, who couldn’t hit barn door at one point then turned it around and proved a lot wrong (including me)

Re: Jay Rod
Been a big Jay fan over the years but it’s clear to see he’s on his road to retirement now. Not sure exactly what it is that makes him look slightly off it at the minute, maybe it’s that he’s surrounded by players who are a few seconds ahead of him in their speed of thought, maybe he’s trying too hard to impress, maybe he’s just slightly out of form, or maybe the likes of Foster are twice the player he is and we don’t realise until he’s missing.
He’ll still get my backing on the pitch, but every dog has its day, and unfortunately for Jay, I think his days are behind him now.

Re: Jay Rod
I'm not convinced he's the spent force (yet) that others seem to think he is, but it's definitely fair to say he stood out as being poor last night. We totally controlled and basically coasted the game and yet he failed to shine and actually struggled to make any impact against a lower league 2 outfit. A disappointing night from him, but I'm not dismissing him just yet.

Re: Jay Rod
All a bit harsh this, he was ok last night, not great, not terrible. Nothing really dropped for him in front of goal but the rest of his game was fine. I don't think he's destined to or expecting to get many PL minutes this season, same as Cork. He'll still be useful to us though.

Feel like Jay Rods been this way since his good spell in the first few months of last season.
If he picks him over Odobert it's because they play different positions

Re: Jay Rod
He got frustrated in the 2nd half and should probably have been booked earlier. Not his night but it's not like we created a bucket load of typical centre-forward type chances and he ended up trying a bit hard and scuffing anything that did come his way.
Barnes had his moment at Sunderland, maybe this can be Jay's?

Anybody can have a poor 90 mins. Just happened to be Jays turn last night. Very silly to write him off for the season based on one game, but that is the way with some posters.

Re: Jay Rod
VK is pretty ruthless. I suspect Jay got the chance last night for VK to see if he still has anything left in his locker. By all accounts he was poor. But he also started the previous round at Forest in the League Cup, and he was really poor too then. Hes 34 now and I suspect future starts are going to be very limited. Too many promising players in our squad to keep them out, and I would not be surprised to see a goal scoring front man coming in January with Foster being in the Africa Cup

This looks like the same thread that was being written about Ashley Barnes around a year ago.

This isn't a Barnes type dip, personally don't think he's done much since returning bar a couple of decent games.
Don't see what he offers the team anymore and think it's his local lad tag that keeps people defending poor performances

Jay is a squad player and will do his best if called upon. As another poster said it was the same about Barnes last season but the difference this year is we are in the Premier league where you have to be at it from minute one.

Interesting that when Jay came on against Villa he actually looked very sharp just didn’t take the chances that came his way. As someone has said, anyone can have a off night

Absolutely agree with this, you do need that link between club and fans. Tbh I thought Barnes fulfilled that role superbly last season, I was surprised they let him go bearing in mind his influence in the dressing room and his legend status with some of the fans.
I'm sure JayRod will have a part to play, he needs to, as we are light on out and out forwards, as Fosters red card has shown.

Still a surprise though; Jay-Rod is something of a sacred cow.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 8:25 amWith Trafford not playing someone else had to get it.
The forum does like a scapegoat though and I believe the club seriously missed a trick in letting Wout go to Hoffenheim: He would've provided us with the EPL quality of scapegoat that we currently seem to lack, right up there with Jeff Hendrick and Joe Hart; as we saw back in 21/22, Josh Brownhill offered what he could, but the lad never really managed cut it with the baying-mob.

Let’s be fair, he’s had a great career and we’ve enjoyed him over the years too, but he is winding down now and doesn’t quite look as sharp. Our focus in January has to be for a left back and a striker.

And very likely will be.
Re: Jay Rod
I don't think a game against Salford in the cup counts for much to be honest, it's the last couple of years that have made it pretty obvious he's going to struggle at this level again. Barnes finding some form at the level doesn't indicate Jay is going to find some at the level above, bit of a silly comparison imo.

Re: Jay Rod
In hindsight he should have got a year's contract 15 months ago, and not two, allowing us to recruit a replacement this Summer. In fairness his goals were a significant contribution in the first half of last season but after Christmas he was either injured or did not feature until the last few games. If he wants to continue his career after Burnley he needs to go on loan in January and puts himself in the shop window. I am sure with us still paying part of his wages and the other club the balance, he will not be disadvantaged financially, so no excuses from him. Otherwise he becomes the next Matt Lowton/Dale Stephens
