Best Value Burnley 11
Amazing to see the figures we have spent on players this season. Never imagined we would see the day.
If Brady and doesnt start, with Hendrick and Defour out we will have £35m worth of midfielders not starting! Amazing.
Who would you say has been the best value 11 we have had since The Premier league era brought mega bucks to the game?
Heaton £0
Sinclair £0 Duff £35k Keane £2.5m Ward £500k
Alexander £200k Barton £0
Little £100k Elliott £0 Blake £250k
Vokes £350k
Total £3.9m
Tom Heaton £0. If we paid £5m it would have been a bargain. The best keeper in generations.
Frank Sinclair £0. His experience and ability was vital in a team that could easily have gone down. Who would know where we would be now had we done so? The rest is history.
Michael Duff £35k. A relatively unheard of 27 year old defender with no league experience coming in as back up. Went on to become a club legend with over 300 games including three promotions to the premier league - enough said.
Michael Keane £2.5m. The only 7 figure player. I would like to have picked McGreal who helped develop Gary Cahill and was influential in our team that year. But the fact is Keane is every bit as good as Cahill and will go for £20m minimum. Duff played a big part on Keanes progression no doubt.
Stephen Ward £500k. When we bought him almost everyone was unanimously underwhelmed. Why did we need him when we had Mee and Lafferty. Consistently solid without being flashy. Must be 8/10 every week. Our record since he came in has been outstanding. Our best performances last time at this level were with him and the side and have been ever since he came back.
Graham Alexander £200k. Who could believe we paid £200k for a 36 year old Preston right back, and on a two year deal? If anyone could, I bet they wouldnt have believed we would have converted him to a central midfielder who would be an influential part of taking us to the premier league and a league cup semi final playing all 61 games before scoring 7 prem goals. Before returning to Preston.
Joey Barton £0. Signing him once on a free was a masterstroke. Signing him twice on a free is genius. The most assured and composed footballer I have seen play for us. Outstanding. We would definitely have failed last season without him. A key player in the 23 undefeated. His teamtalk at Hull says it all.
Glen Little £100k. The most exciting, yet unlikeliest of wingers I saw play for us. had it all. Would be worth millions today. In fact he was then!!
Wade Elliott £0. Influential in taking us up culminating in THAT goal. Had as good a cross as anyone. And an engine to boot! Would thrive in a Dyche team.
Blake £250k. He was good the first time round. And they say never go back. But he was even better the second time. The goals were less frequent but the tricks werent. His performance in that Semi final was as good as you will see from a championship player. Made Spurs look like a non league outfit.
Vokes £350k. A bargain. Target men arent always known for their goals. But Vokes has bagged plenty - 1 in 3.5 games. 35 in two championship promotion seasons. As well as contributing to two of the best partnerships we have seen in the championships in years with Ings and then Gray. Neither would have scored half as many without him.
Total price less than £4m. Remarkable. Almost everyone of them players would comfortably go for that figure alone in this day and age and all have played a part in where we are now.

I feel Keane doesn't belong. Not because he is not good enough but we are talking bargain basement players. I'd go for John McGreal like you said.

Caldwell was a freebie wasn't he? Captained the most unlikely of promotions. Probably makes the bench.
Ben Mee and Trippier could also potentially be included.

Andy Payton up top.
Didn't we get him and money?
Got to be up there with the best business we have done in the last couple of decades.

Re: Best Value Burnley 11
It's all relative. If we have a bad run and then Robbie Brady's crosses for Andre to convert keep us in this division, they'll be the two with the best value.
I don't actually think it'll come to that so it's Michael Duff all day long!

Payton was valued at 300k in a swap deal that took Paul Barnes the other way.
Blake was 1.5m first time round.

Depends on how you define "value".
Based on the profit we made and the contribution he made to our promotion, £1m for Ings was a pretty good deal.

Re: Best Value Burnley 11
For the quality of player he is / was and what we paid, surely Danny Ings should be in the squad?
What about Rodriguez too as he came through the youth set-up there was very little cost involved, or is this only subject to players that have come from other clubs?

What about Kalvenes .Don't know if he cost anything but worth it for that goal at Blackpool.Turning point of the promotion season.
Re: Best Value Burnley 11
I'd make a case for Trippier. Cost just under £500k, hardly ever missed a game, provided some of the best crosses I've seen watching Burnley, topped the assist charts every year, was part of the best defence in the Championship in a team that won automatic promotion and was eventually sold for near enough 10 times his transfer fee.
His chicken dance at Bollywood was also worth a few quid.

Michael duff for me is the single most VFM player ANY club has ever had, not just Burnley. No one else even comes close.
If we'd paid £4m for Michael duff, it would STILL be Michael duff.
Great thread BTW.

Re: Best Value Burnley 11
I'm surprised that no one has gone back a bit further for some real value.
Frank Casper 30k from Rotherham. Possibly the most skillful player I've ever seen in a Claret shirt.
Peter Noble similar amount from Swindon.
Colin Waldron another similar amount from Chelsea.
Jim Thomson again around the 30k mark from Chelsea. Formed one of the great centre-back pairings with Waldron.
Paul Fletcher 60k from Bolton.
Martin Dobson Free transfer from Bolton I believe. (Now that is value)
Doug Collins Not sure of the fee we paid Grimsby for him but great footballer.
With all due respect to our current team I think they would all get into our 1st team squad.

If your going back to that era you've got to add in Leighton James nowt from youth, Brian Flynn nowt from youth, and of course Alan Stevenson in nets for a pittance from ChesterfieldCaptJohn wrote:I'm surprised that no one has gone back a bit further for some real value.

A free transfer midfield of Elliott, Barton, Jones and Arfield isn't half bad!! That's where I'd start my team.
Heaton
Sinclair McGreal Duff Thomas
Elliott Barton Jones Arfield
Heath
Cooke
I make that £35k for Duffer and £15k for Andy Cooke. Not bad for £50k all in!!

Trippier (and Mee) both had hefty sell on clauses within their deals, didn't they? I'm not disputing that we got and are getting great value, but that should probably be factored in.

Best value in terms of transfer fee might be very different from best value in terms of cost to the club and particularly nowadays. Eg Barton free but is paid massive wages.

Surely Andy Farrell deserves a mention. He might not have been comparable to the skill of more recent players but he played in virtually every position, including keeper and stayed on at the club after his playing days were over.
