O/T Film Recommendations please.

Post by Heaton's Gloves » Sat Feb 11, 2017 6:01 pm

Watched two excellent films recently? Hacksaw Ridge and Lion. Both true stories.
Anyone recommend another great film for this evening please?

Depends what you're looking for.

Live by Night - Ben Affecks Gangster love story with a twist.

Manchester By the Sea - Casey Affleck plays a man trying to deal with personal trauma.
I really liked this one, its made by Amazon I think.

La La Land - didn't think much of this one really, over hyped.

Missing Figures - the true story of 3 Negro women and their major contributions to the USA putting a man into space and the problems the women faced due to their skin colour and gender.
Easy film to watch.

Bleed for this - another true story about a boxer who broke his neck and his journey back to being able to walk and then fight again.
Worth a watch if you like that sort or film.

The Founder - about how McDonalds became the company it is today
Quite enjoyed this one and again based on a true story.

Assassins Creed - adapted from the games, its ok but not much to shout about.

Moonlight - about a black lad struggling with his sexuality in a rough neighbourhood.
Not a great film, but isn't a bad little film if you don't mind gay stuff.

The Theory Of Everything - true story of Stephen Hawking.

Eddie Redmayne plays the part of Steve very well, and even looks like him. Excellent film.

The Imitation Game - Story of Alan Turing and the solution to the Enigma machine - Benedict
Cumberbatch plays the lead along with Keira Knightley. Another excellent film.

The Lost Weekend is probably one of the best films you can watch about alcoholism. Dog Day Afternoon is arguably Pacino's best, well possibly.

For more recent though probably not that recent, I'll recommend There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men.

The Skeleton Key with Goldie Hawn's daughter. Twist at the end is brilliant.

The Jacket with Adrian Brodie is exceptional, as is the Pianist, also with Adrian Brodie.

And for tomorrow, try the Martian. I thought it was great!

Another shout for the railway man.

The revenant was also very good.

Was Tom "the sultry weirdo" Hardy in lawless, enclosure? If so I think I've seen it.

Yep Tom Hardy in Lawless and Shia La Bouef (spelling apologies) - not a bad film

If you like Tom Hardy (I do) then watch The Drop...James Gandolfini's penultimate film I think. Very good understated film.

Watched Hacksaw Ridge last week and thought it was brilliant - knowing it's a true story makes it all the better.

You'll enjoy The Pianist though

Very good film but a little depressing. It's not too late to change your mind. I should plump for the Treasure of the Sierra Madre instead. Or perhaps the Third Man. If you really want to push the boat out though there is a hidden gem called His Kind of Woman, starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell and Vincent Price. You should be able to find I somewhere.

I'll second The Drop. The plot is close to straight-to-DVD but brilliant script, directing and performances make it a very, very good film.

Tom Hardy has an Oscar-winning performance in him somewhere. He just needs the right script and director.

One out of the west wing -

"An/The Angels Share"

Will have you in stitches laughing from the get go but has a nice back story too. And the ending is heart warming too. Plenty of "ffs" moments that keep it ticking along nicely.

Easy watching and would recommend everyone to give it a go as it's one of those gritty british films.

If you are a Tom Hardy fan, Child 44 is much better than it's IMDB rating. Another vote for The Drop.
If you can watch subtitles, or speak French, Sarahs Key, is excellent.

BTW. IMDB ratings are usually very accurate and worth a check.

One not to watch, 'Cell' with John Cusak.

Another Stephen King adaptation that starts off really well, begins to tail off halfway through, then by the end you think wtf?

I still don't get the ending.

I saw girl on the train last week and thought it was shite. I'm much more of a war film person though. I saw hacksaw ridge last night and thought it was good. A mention must go to 'unbroken'. Other good war film's off the top of my head are the pianist as has been mentioned. Escape from sobibor is a good film also as is enemy at the gate. Also enjoyed the classic das boot and downfall - both in German subtitles.
