Jim Capaldi

Post by hampsteadclaret » Wed Aug 02, 2017 1:40 am

We shouldn't forget talented people who made a contribution and Jim Capaldi deserves a small mention on what would have been his 72nd birthday...

[2 August 1944 – 28 January 2005).

Capaldi was an English drummer, singer and songwriter. His musical career spanned more than four decades. He co-founded the psychedelic rock band Traffic in 1967 with Steve Winwood with whom he co-wrote the majority of the band's output. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of Traffic's original line-up.

- Capaldi also performed with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Alvin Lee, and Cat Stevens.

- an early hit for Traffic...Jim Capaldi is on the drums - 'Hole in my shoe' [1967]

Quicknick..he died twelve years ago after a short illness of stomach cancer - JC died in the London Hospital, Westminster and he was survived then by his Brazilian wife, and two daughters in their twenties....plenty of information online.

One of the best things he did was write this song with Steve Winwood in 1971 from the album of the same name..

Traffic - 'The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys'....one of the comments underneath says this...' You might call it rock 'n roll. You might call it jazz. You might call it blues. Or you might just call it original & inventive & sublime & ethereal & like nothing else you have heard before or since..'

It's twelve minutes of your time but this is special.

Haha, Used to really like traffic & Capaldi.
I have a double gate-fold Traffic LP with an even longer version of Low Spark High Heeled Boys on (the whole of one side) -though my favourite on that album was "(Sometimes I feel so) uninspired".
I dont have a record deck any more so haven't played this for years. Might try and see if available on cd nowadays. I used to like grooving out to that in the mid 70s.

First album I bought was Traffic's Mr Fantasy. Followed by the album 'Traffic' in 69 and then 'John Barleycorn Must Die' in 70. I was a big Stevie Winwood admirer and loved the Spencer Davis Group. Traffic encompassed the psychedelic phase in the late 60's which was infectious and no more so than the film 'Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush' with Barry Evans of 'Please Sir'and 'Mind Your Language' and the gorgeous Judy Geeson. Capaldi, Winwood, Mason and Wood were talented musicians.

As this set me off thinking about old Traffic or Winwood/Capaldi stuff- I recalled those old Island sampler LPs from the late 60s: "Nice Enough to Eat" and "You can all join in". Ive still got them, I doubt they sound very good though as they took a lot of stick over the years
Those samplers introduced me to a lot of "new" bands. There were a few Winwood/Capaldi related tracks on them.
Some great stuff on those: Jethro Tull, Fairport, Free, John Martyn; Mott the Hoople, Nick Drake, King Crimson. And all for 14/6 (72p).

As a youngster all I can remember Jim Capaldi for is his cover of "Love Hurts". Remember seeing that on TOTP.

Traffic - 'Paper Sun'....Paper Sun" was the British band Traffic's debut single, released in May 1967. It was a number 5 hit in the United Kingdom.

Yes it is 50 years old this year but many people will have heard it...what has it got..?

psychedelia / psychedelic pop.

a fab sitar riff by Dave Mason.

Steve Winwood's wonderful 'blue-eyed soul'/rhythm and blues voice..
- SW later went on to join the Spencer Davis Group and Blind Faith...plus loads of solo stuff.

As in post 8, this is 'Love Hurts' Jim Capaldi's biggest solo success..[1975]....cheers for the contributions.

Many versions of this song, and arguments [online] about who did it best.

Hampstead, I think you will find Stevie Winwood first joined the Spencer Davis group before going on to join Traffic etc. He was only about 14 or 15 when he joined them, his brother Muff Winwood played bass and went on to become a successful record producer. Spencer Davis studied German at Birmingham University about three years before I did.

As well as being a drummist, was it not Jim Capaldi who played keyboard on this tune?
