No surprise that is was the Times that broke the Manchester City legal challenge to the Premier League charges story

It somehow seems fitting that this is the 9000 post on the thread that started with their neighbours huge financial results

£600 Million?

Isn't he taking a loss there?
he is, but I would be surprised if it is that much even though is could be argued that would be a cheap price for the club when you consider over £400m has been spent on the stadium and to start that project now and get to that sge would likely cost over £600m

it is the worst possible time for Moshri to sell but it looks like he has tapped out on the money side - or for those sceptics out there, he can no longer access the funds of the man who made him a billionaire in the first place

Questions are raised about the wealth of potential new Sheffield United owner... after the value of Nigerian businessman's company dropped 94 PER CENT in the last year

Unfortunately most of what @SwissRamble now produces is now behind a paywall - at a price not that different to a full subscription to the Athletic

but this tweet about the prizemoney (not matchday revenues) of English teams participating in UEFA club competitions re-enforces what I have been saying about the distortion it enables in the Premier League. Man City will likely earn more than Burnley FC did in 2021/22 from all revenues just from their Champions League prize money if they win it this year - and it is set to increase again by as much as a third - just what is the Independent Regulator for football going to do about that

Estimate of English clubs' TV money from UEFA competitions after this week's semi-finals:

- Manchester City €127m
- Chelsea €94m
- Liverpool €82m
- Tottenham Hotspur €64m
- Manchester United €31m
- Arsenal €26m
- West Ham €21m

Another one for the 'Vultures are at the Door' grouping

SportsBusiness with an overview of a report on the issues with Private Equity in Sport - The report itself is 90 pages long but costs £1,495.00. Still this overview is an interesting read about the complications that arise from having funds in which there can be 100's even 1,000's of investors including nation states and sovereign wealth funds - take for example the Sanabil Investments part of Saudi Arabia's PiF fund, it invests in Silverlake, Silverlake own almost 15% of City Football Group, while PiF owns 80% of Newcastle United. We know that PiF/Newcastle are looking to be a multi- club operation, Sanabil also invest in CVC, CVC have a stake in La Liga's media rights and going forward are competing to have the same the Bundesliga, Serie A, and the French Ligue.

Of course the problem doesn't end with Private Equity and Sports rights holders like leagues/competitions - there are many clubs whose supporters do not know all those that have a share in their prime ownership group - we are probably one such.

Sport does not know the origin of its private equity money, SportBusiness report suggests

This is the Everton takeover deal I was referring to - it has been known about for some time now

Everton are set to be sold for around £600m to American investment fund 777 Partners as early as NEXT WEEK, with Farhad Moshiri's unpopular reign nearing an end as the club fight to save their new stadium build and Premier League status
- The £600million deal is expected to be concluded by the start of next week
- It's understood American investment fund 777 Partners are the preferred bidder
- A deal would bring to an end Farhad Moshiri's painful reign behind the controls

https://archive.is/SqysK
Matt Slater for The Athletic with a lot of the Everton situation - includes a lot on the backstory of Moshri too, which if you don't know gives only some of the reasoning behind the suspicions of the Usmanov in control stories

Everton’s ownership: Moshiri, 777, MSP Sports Capital and what we are hearing

Great question and and article from the Times's Owen Slot - could the answer be both?

Are Manchester City one of greatest teams or one of greatest cheats?
The long wait for an outcome after the club were hit with 115 charges of breaking Premier League rules has left us in a kind of purgatory, unsure if we can fully enjoy and appreciate the achievements of Pep Guardiola’s team

Change of direction at Everton.

BBC: Everton investment: Toffees reach exclusivity agreement with MSP Sports Capital

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65674665

Extracts:

Everton have reached an exclusivity agreement with New York-based company MSP Sports Capital for investment in the club, BBC Sport understands.

Sources say the deal is not yet done but talks are progressing over funding.

MSP looks to have jumped ahead of 777 Partners, which had been in talks over a takeover from owner Farhad Moshiri.

MSP is believed to be looking for a 25% stake with a preferential share structure, not equity in the club, so would be paid back in interest.

777 has had access to the 'data room' (financial accounts), but has not been prepared to pay a 'significant' price owing to the debt on the balance sheet - which stood at £141.7m in the latest accounts.

****************************

I guess by "preferential share structure, not equity...paid back in interest" the BBC reporter means MSP will subscribe for preference shares rather than ordinary shares. If my guess is correct, preference shares receive dividends at an agreed rate, this would be similar to interest, but is not strictly interest.

MSP have been in discussions with Everton for over a year - they were initially looking at financing the Stadium completion with the option of converting the debt into equity at a later date

this is The Esk's view on that news you posted

With both MSP & 777 confident re investing in Everton, there is the possibility that MSP provide debt for the stadium & 777 provide some working capital for the club via an issue of shares

In the above I noted that MLS teams outnumbered Premier League ones by 2:1 - not that I found that surprising given I have been noting their valuations for some years now

So I was interested to find this story this morning - A British Citizen is paying $500m for a new MLS franchise in San Diego - that is roughly twice the value of Burnley or Sheffield United clubs with long history and tradition newly returned to the Premier League - this new franchise still has to pay for all its infrastructure to actually come into being - the thing is a lot of that franchise cost goes to the other MLS teams, simply for allowing them on board it could be as much as $15m each which for many is equivalent to 15% or more of their annual revenues - not that the clubs will necessarily see it - as the payments are made to the other franchise owners not the clubs.

It seems there are some with the means who believe that believe it is a better investment to acquire an MSL franchise and the cost of establishing it and its infrastructure in the US than acquiring a team on their doorstep in this country, and overall I would tend to agree, which is a sad indictment of what football has now become

I have to say I am finding it fascinating how this article from Adam Crafton in The Athletic published on April 6 2023 is finding its way now into political discussion by the broader media

of course anyone who has followed this thread will have been aware of just how involved the Johnson government got in football issues - it gave its blessing to Super League in the weeks before its announcement, before a swift about turn once the public reaction was apparent - that does not seem to have fed through to the thinking expressed here

A recurring theme on this forum is that we blew our opportunity to become a stable and established member of the top flight - there is a misconception that this is easily done, when the reality is that is far from being the case - as this graphic from a piece in the Athletic today about Everton appears to testify, even for clubs for considerably more (owner) wealth and revenues than ourselves

An interesting angle here on performance relative to financial cost of football in the Premier League - note Brentford are currently in that sweet spot following promotion with a low cost base that disappears all too quickly once top flight stability is ensured for a 3rd year or more - the wage demands eventually catch up

Numbers behind Chelsea’s ‘enormous’ financial failure
West London club were by far the worst performers this season in terms of their return from money spent on transfers, wages and agents’ fees

More on this Union of European Clubs - interesting to see the 5 English clubs that were there -Aston Villa, Brighton, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Watford all but he last with European ambitions. Interestingly I think we missed an associate membership of the ECA when we went out to Olympiacos.

and the Athletic who focus more on the fact that the Premier League appear to have accepted in part that they are going to have to share more of their monies with the rest of the pyramid. What is interesting if rather too late is that the issue of UEFA monies is now coming to the fore - this should have been argued about in the build up to the Fan Led review- as I said at the time.

Remember when after a very lengthy process and much government pressure the Premier League finally accepted guarantees that PiF was not subject to government interference so could takeover Newcastle United - well how about this

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and its governor had argued they had sovereign immunity in the legal battle

https://archive.is/lwKEy

Yes that is right the PiF owned franchise argued in court that it was a state owned institution so should not be sublect to the proceeding

https://twitter.com/uglygame/status/1626618699372191745

So if we could roll back time would an Independent Football Regulator approved the Saudi PiF bid for Newcastle my guess is yes despite what some think
The role of the state in PiF the ultimate owners of Newcastle is a complex one that may well be currently being examined by the Premier League - we just don't know that is the way the Premier League and indeed State financed institutions like it

This today from the Financial Times is another illustrative example of how close the state is in the PiF sphere of operations

the changes in the distribution rules for Overseas Media Rights at the Premier League has lead to a growing disparity in incomes (and solidarity payments) - it seems that disparity is set to grow further in the next round of rights - though not too much given the number of 6 year deals in key markets agreed last time - and there are new forces driving audiences in East

Anyone who has watched the Everton situation since the arrival of Moshri will not be surprised by this revelation - to many observers including a number of fans at Goodison the influence of Usmanov on proceedings was always apparent -

Questions mount over Alisher Usmanov’s links with Everton FC
Sources claim five football managers held talks over top job in presence of now-sanctioned oligarch

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... everton-fc

Is Moshri a proxy? - the investigation really needs to start in the Isle of Man and where the money for most of Moshri's spending at Everton comes from - Blue Heaven Holdings

of course we have been here before
Paradise Papers: Who is in control of Everton?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41878954
the only truly surprising thing is that this has taken so long to occur - it could have potentially damaging repercussions for the investment from MSP - their money is needed to fund transfers for next season and to pay the next instalment to Laing O'Rourke for the stadium build to continue. there is also the small matter of the potential changes in the boardroom

More links to Everton but actually about a need and desire for tighter financial regulation in the Premier League - certain changes are inevitable to align with the revised UEFA regulations for Profit and Sustainability (though the thresholds in the Premier League will be higher). Of course. the Premier League needs 14 votes to carry a motion and the 14/6 hegemony is now closer to 13/7 so agreements may be difficult even though for the biggest revenue earners strong revenue to football spend rules act greatly in their favour

Everton’s Premier League survival fuels desire for faster, tighter financial regulation

Uefa looking to curb the spending of English clubs with a cap on spending/wages
for those experiencing paywall issues with the above link

Uefa’s radical plan for fixed spending cap on transfers
Move on transfers comes amid fears over English clubs’ financial dominance

https://archive.is/EFyNH

this makes me laugh a little - and smells as much of Super League and the American owner influence as it does of broader concerns about certain teams having a permanent dominance - and we are close to that final thing already

Just look at the financial distress of the the likes of Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG (all recently paying wages at unsustainable levels (and including all members of the Super League rebel three), throw in the growing ubiquity of American owners who are wanting to see earnings from their investments (which will then also add asset value)

Then consider that while competition and employment authorities in various jurisdictions may be ok with a the notion of a % revenue cap on wages, achieving a maximum threshold is much less likely to find agreement, and will certainly be put to the test in the courts by players, agents and their unions.

This story comes as no surprise and the value seems close enough to being right for the current stage of development - Newcastle United find a Middle East shirt sponsor - I think the deal value is greater than the total commercial Income at Newcastle in the final Ashley years

Newcastle agree £25m-a-year shirt sponsorship with Middle East company
https://archive.is/4hveZ
This new shirt sponsorship deal for Newcastle United is starting to cause a series of ramifications even before it is approved/confirmed. Miguel Delaney in the Independent outlines them here and I find the owner equity investment argument an interesting one, that if agreed and brought into the rule book, and adopted by the EFL and National League - as funding from the Premier League usually encourages) could have significant impact in the lower reaches of the English game given the number of clubs that benefit from sponsorship deals from owners and their commercial interests. the ramifications at the two distinctly different levels are not the same but are potentially equally significant to games sustainability

Why Man City’s FFP case could be another Super League moment for football
Other Premier League clubs are carefully watching Newcastle’s prospective new sponsorship deal amid expectation it could have implications for the investigation into City’s finances

Elland Road proposal shows why Leeds and other clubs can’t govern themselves
https://archive.is/aWpzJ

One thing that the article misses is that in the business world such transactions are relatively normal - such a mortgage doe not prevent Radrizzani selling Elland Rd along with the shares he still owns in Leeds United when that transaction comes to pass - essentially he is accessing the capital value now for his next venture and the issue one of overlap - in house moving terms he is just breaking the chain of transaction dependency that is why the loan has been described as a bridging loan.

The issue from a future regulators perspective would still likely be one of keeping the ground available for the club and there is no mention of that relationship being broken in any of the reports I have seen.

Football has allowed the world of business and its practises through the door - we might not like it, but we need to understand just what does and doesn't pose a threat to a club, and this is where transparency of actions becomes important. From what I have seen there is little about such transparency in the proposals for an independent regulator

Interesting stuff re Everton - if true, it will see Moshiri receive no payment and his holding diminish in value in the short term - though could allow the club to function if Moshiri is sanctioned by UJ Government over the Usmanov relationship.

Moshiri is set to cede majority control of Everton with a new share issue in favour of new investor (MSP) diluting Moshiri to below 50%. New investor will control budgets plus board composition allowing for change in key Chair & CEO positions

So this is a really interesting list - and one that doesn't surprise me too much, particularly the number of MLS teams that feature, twice as many as that in the Premier League - from Sportico

World's 50 Most Valuable Soccer Clubs 2023 Ranking
The 50 most valuable soccer clubs in the world are worth a total of $73 billion, according to data compiled by Sportico. The Premier League's Manchester United ranks first at $5.95 billion, while Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls are No. 50 at $525 million. The top 15 richest teams are all in Europe, but MLS landed 18 clubs overall in the top 50, followed by the EPL with nine.

Interestingly Wikipedia suggest that Leeds sold Elland Rd to the council in 1982 buying it back in 1998 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elland_Road" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Of course, the issues, concerns and uncertainty of ground sales is not one we are unaware of - the initiative of John B in particular to bring both Turf Moor and Gawthorpe under the umbrella of our club was one we should be long thankful for. Though as Clive Holt as explained in his recent book - it was necessary at the time to keep the club solvent and to allow it to fulfill its moral and financial obligations to its creditors

We first saw this approach from the US clubs in the 1970's then the Americans again and more significantly Russian clubs in the noughties, then the Chinese in the 10's now it is Saudi Arabia who are trying to give significance to their league by paying extortionate wages to superstar players in the twilight of their careers in.

Some might see it as a cynical attempt to help that other Saudi Club Newcastle United as they return to European Football but that is a strtch

Tariq Panja and Rory Smith in the New York Times wonder, like me if the new Chelsea owners are deliberately trying to inflate the market (again) to price out the competition. If this really is the case then the knock on effect will be interesting and challenging for clubs like ours you would think, considering the budgets we will likely be operating under.

Is Chelsea Setting the Market, or Breaking It?
The Premier League club’s American owners have splashed roughly $750 million on new players since last year. Puzzled rivals can’t see a strategy behind the spending.
