Half a billion of debt is ridiculous

Brighton fans get really annoyed when the debt is mentioned, like Bolton fans used to do and it's just as funny

They keep saying the same stuff, like it's not a real debt etc

Would be staggered if that wage bill was the 2nd lowest in the PL last year.

The last couple of years have seen some fantastic business on player sales and looking at the likes of Caicedo and the offers they turned down recently this looks set to continue.

Finishing top 6, potentially Europe etc will probably keep Bloom at the club for longer and he’ll be happy he’s not having to subsidise the club to the tune of £50m plus per season anymore. Prior to the last couple of years Brighton’s record in the league was not that dissimilar to ours - the only difference being Brighton spent half a billion to be struggling near the bottom of the league most seasons.

That's mental money for a club that small.

Wonder how many clubs have to drown in debt before football admits it has a problem 🤔

Gavi 'could depart Barcelona for FREE this summer' https://mol.im/a/11886233 via https://dailym.ai/android

Barca offered a youth player a professional/senior contract but they can't register him because of their issues with La Liga salary caps.
He could be demoted back to academy status and he could leave for nothing in the summer...
They had inserted a €1 billion buyout clause in his senior contract but that will be canceled if his status is downgraded
This has actually happened, he's been dropped back down to youth team and removed from their senior squad courtesy of the Spanish FA.
He can move for free in the summer if the situation isn't resolved by then, my money is on City to work with Pep if he meets migration rules 🤔

More on parachute payments which are proving to be a sticking point between the PL and EFL with this new deal.

PL CEO Masters has described them as “vital” and “one of the few sustainability instruments that exist within football, albeit for a small group of clubs”, and warned that there would be “significant difficulties” for promoted and relegated clubs without them.

The death of full stadiums? DAZN also does this here in Italy and it’s thought to be a contributing factor to why Serie A games are poorly attended.

I think this just reinforces what our business model should be;

Signing unfashionable (unfashionable for the big teams) youngsters and try and coach them into our sort of way of playing, not necessarily pushing the boat out for massive marquee signings but being diligent & astute.

Like a mini Ajax if you will; easier said than done mind.

There’s not much point signing players for big money north of say 27 or free agents on big wages over 30, prefer to invest that money into our scout network.

Blackburn Rovers accounts. A nice 21m operating loss last season. Player sales halved it but won’t be the case this season as they didn’t sell anyone. Total losses now 300m.

This weekend we have seen a famous (and quite wonderful) promotion and in the posts above more incredible financial reports, illustrating how clearly bonkers the spending on football has become.

Yet there are other issues that are being highlighted but not really being picked up, they are perhaps more important for the game overall

Last week I posted this on another thread, I was accused of using a lot of words to justify a dislike of the owner - incidentally I do not recall ever wishing them anything but success in my writings and postings - though I will say that is more because of what the club means to the town, than for them personally. People often mistake criticism for dislike, but these same people tend to to defend the owners every action just because of the gloriously thrilling spectacle of the teams performance this season, which frankly, is both ridiculous and hugely irresponsible.
Chester Perry wrote:

...When Pace gave his first press conference he said this when asked directly about communication with fans/supporters

“I hope that they will see that we are fairly open, I like to think very open, and we like to communicate"

that of course has proven to be distinctly untrue, we now exist in era of the club where reporting of its business side and information shared with shareholders in particular, has never in the 125 year history of the Burnley Football and Athletic Club Limited been so restricted. The complexity and opacity of the entities that comprise the ownership structure are just an additional distraction to this core issue.

My last article for the London Clarets finished in this way

"Football clubs are not private playthings; they should not be thought of as piggy banks, nest eggs
or annuity funds. They are the fabric that binds together communities with all their hopes, joys,
dreams, fears, memories and pain woven into them. We should remain mindful of this, be vigilant
and seek to better understand how our club is run."

you can read all of it here if you choose https://twitter.com/LondonClarets/statu ... 0268922886

essentially what I am getting here is that anyone who believes that the club is a central institution of our community as supporters and/or the town has a responsibility to be a critical observer of it. This is a millennia held belief of free (western) societies. Hence, my quotation of Juvenal's "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" on another thread yesterday. There are many who would be better supporter's of the club by understanding the value of that thought, because they act like customers and they are not when it comes down to the essential truth of it.

That is a point proven repeatedly up and down the country in recent years and one we are still seeing at clubs ranging from Everton, through fellow Lancastrians Morecambe to Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion. There are plenty of others too, which is why we are heading to the imposition of an Independent Regulator of Football, not because football is a huge financial industry (it isn't in the scheme off things) but because of the fact that football clubs central importance to the communities in which they reside. A point recognised and made clear very early on in the recent White Paper - actually in the executive summary

“The free market does not properly account for the importance of clubs to their fans and communities, and industry self-regulation has remained inadequate – seeing clubs collapse and fans harmed. Therefore, football needs a strong centre to independently apply reformed rules.”

I have not, would not suggest that we should not enjoy the football - this season should be treasured and cherished, it will rightfully live always as a bright star in the annals of our history and may yet be the precursor to even greater achievements - but that should never allow us to forget our responsibilities to watch over the rest of the activities at the club
Yesterday Jonathan Wilson in the Guardian wrote this

Sackings spate shows who matters now: welcome to football’s age of the executive
The defining player and dominant manager have had their day – now a club’s route to success is to catch the eye of a sugar daddy

https://archive.is/oVm36

it highlights an issue I have been mulling over for some time, covering in part in my articles and posts but not fully addressing - I know that there are others that share some of my concerns based on personal correspondence - they have sought. Today in the Athletic Oliver Kay tackles the issue head on, it is a long and thoughtful piece. The two together are probably the most significant football writings of the weekend.

The owners and chairmen of football clubs should no longer be allowed to stay quiet

The above article served only to prove Miguel Delaney's assertion that 'Their are no model clubs for long' (http://www.uptheclarets.com/messageboar ... =2&t=48329)

it follows another article in the Guardian earlier in the week from Grimsby chair Jason Stockwood

Grimsby Town FC owner Jason Stockwood said artificial intelligence is already influencing the game with teams using it to sign players

Both the owners and manager of our club have a belief and commitment to tech, which is increasingly looking like an essential component of a club's current, never mind future operations, though it appears that the progress of one initially sports/football related AI concern (Frontier Labs Limited) will no longer benefit from the funding/input of Vincent Kompany. The divestment of his shareholding looks strategic and planned, the business appears to have moved away from its sports roots, occurring over multiple years, with shares being transferred to the original founders of the business he helped grow out of an incubator operation that won the first ever football data hackathon.

The key there was no fans in attendance and it actually became an issue for both the domestic and international broadcasters - over saturation domestically and out of advertising revenue and peak audience viewing opportunities internationally

There are still some posters on this board who believe that we will have a significant Chinese investor in our club this summer (following the story that Alan Pace told business club members around the time he was sacking Sean Dyche last season.

While there is a different refocus on football within China

The story on the international ownership front is still following a now familiar path of exit, including the last financial giant Fosun who earlier this season where looking for western investment partners at Wolves. Now they are considering selling Grasshoppers of Zurich

and in the background is the potential for asset/trading freezes like we saw at Chelsea. The increased Chinese agitation of Taiwan could easily and rapidly escalate

Philippe Auclair and his colleagues recently won an award for the investigative journalism behind as series of exposes under the umbrella of Devil in the Data - many of which have featured in this thread and can be found listed at the end of this article on why the award was made

https://www.investigativejournalismfore ... orts-data/

They have not rested on their laurels though - in the last few weeks Josimar Football has been posting a new seies of pieces on football's relationship with betting companies and more specifically those white label names we see on the front of football shirts - these are extensive articles and amongst those names feature are our on training kit sponsor X8Bet (a few here lamented this choice of partner, many couldn't care less, a feature that extends to the boardroom at Turf Moor it seems.

All this comes as we await the Governments White Paper on gambling and last weeks rather useless voluntary ban on 'front of shirt' sponsorship in just over 3 seasons - note the ban does not include sleeve, training kit, perimeter or 'preferred partner' deals. The articles are listed in order of appearance

This has been known for a while. Chelsea looking to do the same and if there is a full Manchester United takeover they will be a multi-club too

As things appear it is looking like a third of the 92 will be involved in some form of multi-club ownership

In many ways I am surprised this has taken so long - A new group, backed by Javier Tebas is formed to challenge the interests and the might of the ECA - an organisation with hundreds of members, less than 10% of whom are allowed to vote on it's members. The Union of European Clubs aims to speak (and represent) those who have long been marginalised.

Rick Parry continues his dog with a bone act, in regards to parachute payments, which have not grow for 8 seasons and were subject to covid rebate contributions, unlike solidarity payments, Still there is no mention of the ever in creasing revenue gap between the top and bottom of the Premier League facilitated by UEFA and in the future FIFA. this is the gap he as actively been involved in trying to not only increase but seal in perpetuity (Project Big Picture) lest anyone forget - from the Athletic.

Juventus' points deduction has been revoked temporarily on appeal, they're up in 3rd place now.

I saw this was likely yesterday - more potential 'kicking the can down the road', Champions League qualification next season is vital to their finances.

I have been writing about the distortion in domestic leagues that UEFA's payments to participants of its club competitions creates for quite some time - in many ways this feels somewhat to late - The European Leagues organisation demand that UEFA change it;s payment model - from the Athletic

This from Josimar Football is an interesting new angle in the fight against gambling in football - players are fighting against the use of their image without payment to advertise betting companies

So this new organisation - the Union of European Clubs - got off the ground today - no surprise what the key takeaway has been - just look at the share of revenue shared by just 12 clubs - funnily enough almost all were involved in Super League

Champions League: Uefa must change revenue distribution, says Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish

Of course we were given the heads up on it last week - It is an argument I have been making for years
