jedi_master wrote:I think even though you are only four years younger than me, as I said before, my generation (and cricketfieldclarets by the sound of it) were realistically the last generation to not be 'doing things the old way'.

Don't get me wrong, I have mates my age on Tinder (one of my best mates now lives in New Zealand and seems to be on a conscious effort to conquer the entire nation) but I think I just find it a bit depressing as it's kind of like the same way the internet has destroyed the high street. If everything is done online, including even meeting your potential life partner, so many experiences that have been massive parts of everybodies life will soon cease to happen.

To reply to your point on rejection, I firmly believe it is character building. I am pretty confident in any situation on a social level (not for a second suggesting you aren't either to be clear, this isn't some 'I am superior' thing!) and I do think a lot of that is down to what my youth was like, I can't help but wonder the difference in confidence/esteem between generations going forwards. I have no doubt it is far easier to pull when it's based on a picture and your name/age as opposed to actually having to work for it, talk etc. As I said, just for me that chase was an amazing feeling when you succeeded because you worked for it.

The age old question of "How did you two meet?" will soon become a thing of the past, or an irrelevance. I just find that a bit of a shame.

OP - Sorry for massively derailing your topic!

I agree with you Jedi. I am 30 and I have never used tinder because I met my wife a couple of years before it existed. When you was young and single a night out wasn't just about having a few beers and a laugh with your mates. It was also about seeing if you could find a girl. I have had several girlfriends growing up who I had met on nights out, and my most my mates are the same. Now a days that part has been removed and probably half the fun of going out has been removed. I remember when I had a semi serious girlfriend at the age of 23, I stopped going out as much because it wasn't as fun. As you get older you go out for different reasons. When I go back to Burnley and have a drink I have a great time catching up with mates. You can also get 3 pints for under 6 quid in the minors after a game. At my Xmas do at Browns in Leeds I was paying £5.15 a pint!

As cutsy says at post #83, Holmes Mill simply wouldn't work in Burnley. It'd get smashed up in two weeks, impressive though it is. Clitheroe's a totally different demographic.

Translation....it isn't full of drunken plankton-brained f***wits.

They need to bulldoze the whole set opf buildings from planet pizza right up to the old dial a pizza and make it a nice open space for xmas markets etc.

The Boot would then look really nice with its beer garden turned into a nice open plan drinking area like Sinclairs in Manc

I did say the same to my Mrs only the other week. The whole block is an eyesore tbh and could do with replacing in some way.

You mean like stand together at the bar and give the places some business to be open for?

People don't go out the same, it's as simple as that. Times change.

Live groups on Tues night and Sunday afternoon and night.
Queueing to get in - wonderful.
Yep - we had all our 18th birthday parties there in sixth form. It was a great place in terms of size - can’t remember the quality of the beer...but with rge football pitch that I played on many times I thought it was a great facility really.

First place I went in underage was City Limits - aged 15. Pernod and black ! It was downstairs in what is the Talbot now.

Definitely makes me feel old to read threads like this - Inn Place, Swiss, Concert Artistes, Concord, Carlton, City Limits all places my parents told me I couldn't go to which inevitably made them my stamping grounds back in the mid 80s. But I think The Hop was my stand out favourite.

Apparently BFC has bought the place and turning it in to some kind of youth hostel?

I've heard they're using it for storage of the old Seats from the Cricketfield stand.

I've heard it's extra storage space for the dry powder.

Was far better in the late 70s early 80s when it was the Inn Place with Punk bands on the Monday night. Also with the Concord pub next door which was rough as rats
Many a great night at the Inn Place. Excellent music - and a short stumble to the bus home. Concorde was decent too. Still got a photo of the boys in there early 80’s. Boxing and Scottish memorabilia.

Bootleggers
Smacks
Paradise
Posh
Then onto one of the later bars/clubs. Not to late tho as the the sole aim from the age of 16 until the day I met the wife were to go out and not go home alone.......Great times.

We all remember the goods times in the 80's and 90's but it was a lot more violent and dangerous in pubs and clubs back then, pre CCTV. Nearly every Friday or Saturday would kick off somewhere. Town mouse Early to mid 80's was a battle ground , Empress Grill, Carlton, Broadswords, KT's, Bojangles, Smacks,Cats, York house, Red lion, etc . Bouncers were animals in most places. (well known town centre hard men) seen many a pasting in the reception area at the circulation by the bouncers, lads taken outside and given a beating, It was a regular occurrence seeing someone thrown down the stairs at Swiss corner or Savannahs.
You were a brave man catching the last bus home, The town was very territorial with different areas fighting each other. (although they would be friends at football matches )

I'd wager it isn't much different now. We are just not in the age group the experiences it. There are still reports, many caught on camera, of fights and bouncers taking liberties. Video on socials in the last few weeks of doormen slapping, stamping and punching a lad on Hargreaves Street.

The big difference is how quiet town is, the late nightness of it all and us getting older.
