Forrest? Or Forest
It really gets my goat (pretty easy do do these days, sadly) when posters call the football team from Nottingham: Forrest. Even their own club website calls them Nottingham Forest. https://www.nottinghamforest.co.uk/
Where on earth did this urban myth about it being double 'rr' come from? Or did someone hear somebody from darkest Rossendale saying they were going to the 'Forrrrrest game'?

Best way to wind them up is to call them Notts Forest.

I think you mean Notts Forrest and Rowls will be along shortly to confirm it really does get their backs up.Cirrus_Minor wrote:Best way to wind them up is to call them Notts Forest.

Why would 'forest' be excluded from the almost all-encompassing list of words that are misspelled on here?bfcmik wrote:It really gets my goat (pretty easy do do these days, sadly) when posters call the football team from Nottingham: Forrest. Thought this was a thread about the Celtic winger signing for us to see it is not.

Wood or woods?
Re: Forrest? Or Forest
I agree. Notts Forest fans swear blind that their short name is Nottm, but they haven't the foggiest idea how it should be pronounced.Cirrus_Minor wrote:Best way to wind them up is to call them Notts Forest.
"Notts Forest" is just an egregious an abbreviation as their fellow midland clubs, Wolves and West Brom. If their fans insisted that they should be pronounced "Wolvm" and "Brmch", I think they would be successfully ignored.

Re: Forrest? Or Forest
A few years ago they complained to our club because we'd put NOTTS FOREST on the next match board by the traffic lights. To be fair, you would expect one club to get another club's name correct.Goody1975 wrote:Rowls will be along shortly to confirm it really does get their backs up.

You're right. I've seen Man United and Man City up there as well. Just as bad IMO. Or just as trivial.ClaretTony wrote:A few years ago they complained to our club because we'd put NOTTS FOREST on the next match board by the traffic lights. If Notts Forest want to change their name to Nottm Forest, they're perfectly entitled to. They have chosen not to. Maybe next time they come (if there is a next time) we ought to put the full name "Nottingham Forest" in tiny, barely legible, letters, just so it fits in.
But seriously, why are they so precious about their unpronounceable short form? I remember yonks back on Match of the Day, Jimmy Hill made a grovelling apology for using the words Notts Forest (after someone complained). Are they really so concerned that people won't know the difference between them and Notts County?
How exactly should "Nottm" be pronounced?

Bit of trivia for you, Nottinham was originally known as Snottingham, after a Saxon leader called Snot.

Re: Forrest? Or Forest
Man City & Man United are acceptable abbreviations. As for the two Nottingham clubs, one is Notts and the other is Nottingham which can be abbreviated to Nottm. If you were in the city and referred to Notts, it is assumed you are talking about Notts County. They aren't and have never been Notts Forest.dsr wrote:You're right. Who defines what is acceptable? If Blackburn Rovers fans say they don't want to be called B*****d Rovers, would we stop?ClaretTony wrote:Man City & Man United are acceptable abbreviations. How do you pronounce, "Mr." or "Dr."? Is an abbreviation a new concept to you?dsr wrote:Who defines what is acceptable? If Blackburn Rovers fans say they don't want to be called B*****d Rovers, would we stop?

They all pronounce in Notinum anyway so it's easy to see why they're misspelling it too.dsr wrote:How exactly should "Nottm" be pronounced?

Re: Forrest? Or Forest
Mr and Dr are abbreviations to shorten the written form, not the verbal form. Notts Forest is an abbreviation to shorten the verbal form.thatdberight wrote:How do you pronounce, "Mr." or "Dr."? Is an abbreviation a new concept to you?
Do you think an aggressively sarcastic rhetorical question is a good way to finish a post and keep this board friendly? Personally, I often find that when I have written a post, it's a good idea to delete my last sentence because I have already made my point.

Notts is the abbreviation for Nottinghamshire, Nottm for Nottingham.dsr wrote:Mr and Dr are abbreviations to shorten the written form, not the verbal form. Notts Forest is an abbreviation to shorten the verbal form.

Notts County’s full name is Nottinghamshire County Football Club. Forest’s is Nottingham Forest Football Club.
I’d guess that you pronounce Nottm, Nottingham.

Re: Forrest? Or Forest
Notts is an abbreviation for Nottinghamshire. It's got nothing to do with Nottingham Forest, verbally or in writing. Nott'm (often Nottm) is an abbreviation for Nottingham. Just like So'ton (often Soton) is for Southampton.dsr wrote:Mr and Dr are abbreviations to shorten the written form, not the verbal form. Notts Forest is an abbreviation to shorten the verbal form.

There was another example but I deleted it as it was my last sentence

Pathetic response - and who cares how they pronounce it, NOTTINGHAM (not Notts) FOREST is the correct name of the club.dsr wrote:Who defines what is acceptable? If Blackburn Rovers fans say they don't want to be called B*****d Rovers, would we stop?
