What today means to me

Post by Claret Till I Die » Thu Jul 26, 2018 6:15 am

On the 9th May 1987 I saw my team win to stay in the football league. A little over 12 months later I was there to see them run out at Wembley. I've seen them clinch the 4th, 3rd and the 2nd Division (in old money) titles. I've also seen us win at Wembley, be promoted to the Premier league and comfortably stay there. In 2004 I took my son to Austria for a pre season game as I thought it would be my best chance of seeing us play in Europe. Well today I am going to see my team walk out in a real life European football game. I may shed a tear but I salute you Burnley Football Club.

Well said CTID, some journey we have come, the Orient game was a tearful occasion, tears of joy but there have been many more since. It is right to salute the club today for their progression and achievements.

Can only echo the OP

Can't really believe that I'm off to watch Burnley play in an actual European game in about an hour.

Logged in just to like the op. Could have said won at old and new Wembley!

Ironically, on 9th May 1987 I was living in Aberdeen. Couldn’t make the game then and work commitments have prevented me from going today.

Desperately hope we win though, coz I’m in Turkey for the Istanbul game :P

Ive been on the same journey as CTID. And its been phenomenal.

Going from where we were to where we are is more than a fairytale.

Whether its AC Milan or Aberdeen it doesnt matter. Its europe. Arguably Aberdeen is even better. To be playing a scottish team in competetive football in a packed house. Fantastic.

When we get into the early ground tonight I will be reminiscing about the journey weve been on since 87. From Miller to Mullen, Stan to Cotterill, Coyle to Dyche. And even Casper, Heath, Waddle, Laws and Howe we owe them all something. They all played their part in the journey weve been on and the memories the fans have made not only at the games but everything else that goes with it. Ive been to Wembley 4 times ( including Spurs) with 3 different generations of family. .
Seeing us win the 4th division with my family as a young kid was special. Then seeing it all over again with my nephews in 2014 and 2016 was even better.

We also who a huge debt of grattitude to the board and various key figures. From Teasdale to Kilby, Flood Garlick and John B. Again theyve all played their part. They all come under question from time to time. From me included. But theyve all had the clubs best interest at heary.

I still believe we are only part way down the journey.

Hope everybody has a great day tickets or not. Do us proud and hope the team do us proud. Far too many times in our history we have big days for the wrong reasons. Today is the right reason. Enjoy.

PS. If anybody has a camera please can you take photos of the day?

I was wanting to make a photo documentary of this European trip but aint going. Would love to see fans of the trains/planes, etc!!

C’mon Burnley

Excellent OP, sums it up perfectly for me.

We are there on merit too... not just for being losers in a cup final, or for playing the game fairly (as it’s supposed to be played)

Result matters not to me today.... just being here at this game is enough.

Can’t help but feel very jealous of the couple of thousand of you going up there today. And I’m sure many other fans feel the same way as I do.

Do us proud lads. And do everything you can to ensure that more of us will get the opportunity to see the mighty Burnley FC away in Europe this season. Enjoy.
