From Jimmy looks like George Eastham, Johnny Haynes, Bobby Charlton, Bryan Douglas and possibly Roger Hunt but I’d be unsure if he was called up that early.

For mine it’s too dark for Ray but I wouldn’t put money on it. I’ll stick with Haynes.

I love wingers, during his time with us Tony wasn't the best but he did go on to great things,I bought an Old English Sheepdog during Tony's time with us,the dogs name? .....Morley of course

My all time favourite Burnley player even though he was a bit of an enigma. Remember him bagging two goals in a 3-1 at the Turf, and I think it was the first time he'd scored for us.

I thought I was alone in preferring Tony Morley to Terry Cochrane.

Someone said Morley was an enigma and that sums him up. Never really offered enough with us and Brian Miller once told me he was our best Monday morning footballer - i.e. could do it in training but not on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. Talent definitely there though and he showed it over a couple of years at Villa.

My preference still. He never gave the ball away, he’d get tackled but for our throw in or a corner. Whereas Cochrane would beat 3 men, go back and do it again and then put it in the Beehole. He also couldn’t cross with his left peg. Wonderful dribbler though.

That was the incident Alex Elder referred to last week in that superb interview. Alex said he still maintains to this day that we were robbed.

I think we were destined not to win that game.

Could Morley cross with his right peg?

I just think we lost to the better team on the day. We let three goals in the year before against them in the semi final without reply. My dad went and came home saying how unlucky we'd been. You can't keep letting in three goals and count yourself unlucky. By the time we got to the final we were a jaded, tired team who were grateful to be there. Spurs just took advantage of that.

We were done in that 1961 semi final with a string of refereeing decisions that went against us. There was a strong suggestion it was so Jack Kelly could referee the final in his final season. Had we got there then he wouldn't have been permitted to referee it given he was from Lancashire.

1962 final - they were better than us. The decisions might have gone their way but we were, as Silkyskills1 says, a jaded, tired team.

Well at least we lifted the FA Cup in 1914 - team pic below is a postcard that my grandad had. He used to watch the lads pre-WW1 then again when he got out of the Army and came back to Burnley after that war.

Have been trying to rescue some of my old crumbling scrapbook pages - mentioning "Sir" Harry Thomson on the Cult Heroes thread made me find these, from the Napoli games home and away, along with the Eintracht Frankfurt special edition paper for the semi-final.

I like these pix as you can see the old Brunshaw Road Stand packed for the games Vs ManU and Derby. Can also just make out the CFS under construction (or original being demolished) in background of one of the Derby pix. Think I got to see Best, Law, and Charlton line up together in that 1968 win over ManU, and Casp sent off.

Les Latcham leaps to head Burnleys second. Not a phrase heard to often.

In your second set the Best goal was from an impossible angle. It seemed to take forever before it crossed the line. At least we went on to win.

Brilliant Steve, what a great side that was.

Six of those players played in all 42 league games that season, including that young looking Keith Newton who must have been 32 years old at the time. Fantastic team, fantastic season.

Yes definitely Hankin partly obscuring Casp. Maybe Probert, Bradshaw? Also that is not the championship trophy which we didn't get our hands on until the John Angus testimonial a few days later. Wasn't that little cup they are holding some charity trophy or similar they were messing around with?

My initial thought was Hankin but then that looks like Hankin the other side of Frank Casper.

I've sent the pic to Fletch in the hope he can clear it up.

Would Morley have been playing at Preston in 73 maybe he was just getting to know the lads before joining us a few years later,it certainly has a look of him before his skinhead days!

I remember Tony Morley having a blinder against us for Preston reserves at Deepdale in August 1972 and talking to Brian Miller about him thinking he might be worth looking at. I'm sure he hadn't he'd played in the Preston first team then, he'd only just reached his 18th birthday.

Was that to recognise Ralph's selection for the World Cup squad of 1970 ?

If so, from memory, it was prior to the game against Stoke City at the Turf in March '70.

Brian O’Neil didn’t feature that day, Royboy.
Alan West’s last appearance was 24th Jan v Everton.
Was it his first cap?

Baffling. Dave Merrington is suited but played for us the following season. Geoff Nulty is there but barely played 69-70. O’Neil had gone by 70-71.

It is the Stoke match after Ralph had been called up for the provisional squad.

The team that day was: Peter Mellor, Mick Docherty, Ray Ternent, Wilf Wrigley, Martin Dobson, Alan West, Dave Thomas, Ralph Coates, Geoff Nulty, Eric Probert, Steve Kindon.

It was Alan West's debut and Wilf Wrigley's final game for us.

Could Brian O’Neil have been injured pre-match? Strange to see him stripped when he isn’t listed, for that game, In Clarets Chronicles. He didn’t feature in the remaining home games but played in the away.
