There has been a spate of increased dog thefts since Covid came and during lockdown. Hope yours returns.
My sons cat disappreared before Christmas. It turned up 5 weeks later looking terrible. Its recovering now though.

Lost mine last week, 5 years old.
Really hurts as we never got to the bottom of what was wrong with him but found him dead when I got home from work. I’ll be honest I’ve really struggled with it all for 6 months as I knew the writing was on the wall, vets will milk you dry, spent thousands without any clearer knowledge on what was wrong. I wish I’d had jim put down 3-4 month ago when I knew he was struggling and in pain but I selfishly hoped he’s miraculously get better and that’s what’s eating me up inside at the moment. I’m sad I wasn’t with him when he died and had actually booked him into be put down the following day having turned one down on the day due to not giving me enough time to get my head around it.

I lost my darling Lexie, a working cocker spaniel, a week ago yesterday. She was put to sleep very peacefully at home, aged eleven and a half. Her kidneys failed.

I''ve already replaced her with Lucy, a ten month old ginger and white working cocker!

Some people say they feel guilty about replacing a pet very quickly. Don't. It's a compliment to the one whohas just died.

I totally understand why you feel that way , we struggled with making the decision and our boy was 13 ,
5 is no age and you would hope something could have been done , don’t beat yourself up ,you did what you thought was best

Sorry for your loss. I have lost 2 dogs, 2 budgies and 3 hamsters. In fact, I lost one of those hamsters twice when he went AWOL for over a week eating scraps of food down the back of the kitchen cupboards. We put all his cages and wheels and tubes in the loft when all of a sudden he popped his head out from the side of the fridge. Hope that makes someone smile in this sensitive thread :)

Our hamster ran away when I was a kid, we were sat watching tv a week later, and what I thought was a rat came running from behind the fire place, it was our hamster covered in dust and dirt

They say the hardest part of owning a dog,is losing him..

I can 100% concur with this, lost 2 in a couple of years and it’s devastating.. if only our politicians were as smart, loyal and honest as our pets we’d have half a chance..

Thoughts are with you, gets easier but you’ll never forget your little mate..

Thanks John.

Waking up to an empty house the day after Lexie was put to sleep was the pits.
Luckily for me, my niece is a vet and she was able to find Lucy for me quickly.

It’s absolutely harrowing regardless of the circumstances, you’ve just got to treasure the good times & make the most because you know as a puppy/kitten ect 1 day you’ll be saying goodbye.

So very sorry, CAJ. I don’t know that it’s possible to understand how you feel unless you’ve lost a pet of your own.
I’m sure you made Maddys life the best it could be. That’s all we owners can do.

It's a very strange feeling, I'm numb. This was expected, it's part of life, and her age being a factor I was preparing myself for it, but now it's happened I can't help but just think how 17+ years isn't enough time. She's at peace now and it was her time to go, it's just a gut punch.

Sorry for your loss.

I’m on my 16th dog (I previously had packs of rescues)… sadly it never gets any better and miss each one daily; every one had a different personality. You never get over them, just adapt to the new condition… and then give a happy home to the next. They never replace the previous, but bring new joy to counterbalance the loss.

Took me about 6 months and then the mrs persuaded me to get another ‘for the children’ but he’s quickly become my dog.

I struggled a lot more than I thought when I lost mine in January, I hated coming home to an empty house when I was the first back, he was only 5 so it didn’t feel fair at all.

Still miss him when I see photos, feel your pain mate, it’s horrible

It certainly is C and J ..Sorry for your loss ..We lost our beloved Blue merle Collie quite a few years ago now and still miss her like mad.. We decided not to get another dog as we were so heartbroken and didn't want to go through it again,so instead we got into looking after guide dog puppies and have done this now for many years and it's great to help the blind/partially sighted community knowing somebody is going to benefit from your training the pups. Must admit its hard when it comes to giving them back after 12/15 months living with you and training but it's all worth while when you see them working with a blind/partially sighted person after qualifying.

I lost my dog 5 years ago but if I see a photo of her, the tears flow from the middle of my pupils, not the sides. It’s like there is a direct link between my eyes and my heart/ soul.

Our home felt empty and cold. We’ve got a new dog and she’s just as loved.

I’ve been away from the forum for some time recently but I remembered this thread and wanted to add to it today.

Our special boy Dougal has today been diagnosed with aggressive stomach cancer, last week he was absolutely fine and bouncing as he always has been. Then he fell ill overnight a week ago and we’ve had the devastating news today. He’s still with us at Chateau Zlatan but he’s not eating or drinking anything at all now, so we’re keeping him comfortable until he takes the walk over the rainbow bridge before the weekend.

He’s been on this planet nearly 15 years and we’ve been blessed with him for the past 3 of those since adopting him.

He’s special, he must be because I can’t stand dogs…

If it's any consolation I shed more than a tear reading this. Our thoughts are with you. What breed is he, looks very much like our Tibetan Terriers which is probably why it made such hard reading.

Heartbreaking Zlatan, they are special friends. Our old girl, a Springer Spaniel is almost 15 and struggling a little. I feel your pain.

Deepest condolences it's heart wrenching when your best friend leaves you & it's a feeling you'll never forget.

Sorry for the sad news Zlatan. It's heartbreaking.

I went through a painful journey last year.

My boy was diagnosed with a form of cancer. Luckily, we caught it early and he received treatment and was operated on.

I can honestly say, it was the best couple of grand that I have ever spent.

During his recovery, i lost count of the times I watched the movie - A Dogs Purpose :(

I've been to the vets 5 times over the last 3 weeks with our chap as he's got an eye ulcer and having treatment. He's 13 and the last man standing as we've lost two in the last 3 years.

On 4 occasions I've sat in the waiting room and watched families go in with a pet, and only come back with a collar and lead, it's heartbreaking losing your own pet, but equally so watching somebody else lose theirs..

Had to go through the same recently losing a cat to cancer. It's no fun, hope he's comfortable.

We lost our 15 year old springer spaniel and 19 year old cat Mr Whiskers in the same year, in 2018. That was hard to take. My advice is after a period of time, get back in the saddle, so to speak. We now have a sprocker spaniel that we got as a puppy in 2019. His personality is different in some ways and exactly the same in many others, but he is just as loved.

My dog Louis is only coming up 3, so I'm hoping I've got many years of happiness with him.I can truly call him my best pal,he goes absolutely everywhere with me(apart from the Turf),and I know that when the time comes,if I outlive him,I will be absolutely heartbroken.
I can't read any of these posts without it bringing a tear to my eye.
