As a slight aside, what a refreshing change to see a united thread, no bickering or vitriol, maybe we should up a sideline Claret pets supporters group :)

just picked up this thread today!
So very sorry to hear of you losing Kaspa!
As mentioned...not ‘like’ one of the family but ‘is’ one of the family.
So sad to lose your pet...but wonderful, unforgettable memories!
Take care joey!

I really feel for you. I've been through this horrible experience a few times over the years and whilst it doesn't get any easier, no matter how many times it happens, my advice would be to get another dog ASAP.

Awful when you lose one, does anyone one remember a Westie being offered on here (or the predecessor) 9 and a bit years ago because of him biting kids? Monty looks very similar to the one in the OP, hasn't bitten any kids since, but has bitten me 4 times in the past, pleased to say he seems to have got over it now. Turned into a cracking dog. He is still a bit nervous when there are kids around so a good reason to keep them away :)

We had a springer spaniel that passed away nearly 2 years ago, 5th November 2018, in fact my user name is one of the many nicknames we gave him. His real name was Charlie. I said at the time that we would not get another dog because the heartbreak of losing him was too great. However, when I retired in Feb 19 we got a sprocker spaniel puppy and called him Benji. He will never replace Charlie because he doesn't have to. He is a smashing little dog, he has many of Charlie's old traits but also plenty of his own and we love him just as much. My advice is give yourself a bit of time then get yourself another dog. The house is always less empty when there is a pet to help fill it.

Do you ever think, "I wished Benji could have met Charlie". I was thinking of getting another dog, but my sister and her husband said they are getting one in the new year, so they've put me down for dog walking duties (only charging them £70 per hour), so decided not to.

How are you today Joey 13? Really feel for you. We lost our Rhodesian Ridgeback 4 years ago and it broke my heart.I went to crematorium to say goodbye and returned with his ashes.

I do know what you are going through and although you don't get over it you eventually come to terms with it, you have to as life goes on.

Give yourself time, remember the good times and take care.

So sad to say goodbye to a beloved pet. We had to say goodbye to Ron just over a month ago and there is a massive hole in our lives.

I’ll be honest, it’s been an awful day , even having a yoghurt was difficult as he always finished the pot off,I can just see his little face looking at me .
Tomorrow will be tough as it’s down to the vets first thing and sort out what to do with his remains.

I was in two minds whether to post about this , but I’m glad I did ,it has helped me , I know I’m not particularly like on here and it’s been good to see messages from posters who I wouldn’t have thought would be bothered, it’s appreciated and thanks for your concern Weymouth , take care 👍

Sorry to hear Joey. I have lost 4 dogs now-all to a good old age. It doesn't get easier. Our lurcher died in March-I watched him being put to sleep as he was in a bad way, and 4 hours later I saw my mother pass away. Not a great weekend that one.

Does getting another dog help with the loss of the previous dog?

What a lovely little dog, chin up Joey we lost two and said we would never have another as the heartbreak when you lose them,we both used to work nights and got home at 7am opened the door there was no warm welcome for us,no wagging tail,no jumping up at us ...we missed it so much six weeks later we were at the rescue center getting two more and the pleasure they have given us over the last eight years is immeasurable...get yourself another you will always miss the one you have lost but the new one will be different and have different traits and you'll love him just as much.....get another dog Joey!😉

Personally I think it does, though you never lose the memories of the previous one. We have seen a dog pass away and have said no more dogs, no more ties, it means we can go away, or come home late. Then a few weeks or months later you give in because dogs become such a part of your home and life. They are also great for children to grow up with

I can still get emotional when I look at a picture of Ted, he was a fantastic dog, loved to bits by everyone that met him.

Our new dog Archie has only been with us a week or so, and he won’t ever replace Ted, but I know that he will bring many years (hopefully) of happiness to us. He’s already a real character, with bloody needle like teeth!

The house suddenly feels a home again, with having a new dog. They’re tying, take some training and a lot of time, but for me, the greater the effort, the more rewarding they are.

I think that the cat would rather he buggered off after a year or so with no dogs about, but she will come round!!

This thread made me smile. We are a nation of dog lovers. Dogs fit with our phsyche. I grieved more for my Labrador than my own father.
The bond with the dog is unconditional, but they live a different pace than us Bi Pods.

I thought I would never get over losing “Ralph” but it gets easier and the memories are always there. Now we have a crazy arsed Spaniel that I wasn’t sure I could ever like the same But you don’t get the same you get a different dog but the loyalty is still there.

I think if they had met, there would have been a prolonged session of bum sniffing followed by an extended session of playing chase, then they would have sorted out who’s feet they would sit at, separate toilet break times etc.
By the way think it’s a bit harsh putting you down just because you overcharge for dog walking

Sorry to read this joey13, there is a reason why they are known as mans best friend. They leave behind a massive hole which can't be filled easily.

It is the little things that you don't always realise instantly too, bit like the yoghurt pot you mentioned, it is their quirks and individual mannerisms they have that make them so special and good company. It does ease in time and you begin to remember the memories with fondness rather than sadness.

I've lost two dogs ( both put down by the vet ) and it's absolutely horrible.

My strong advice is to get another straight away. The first time we waited six months, which was far too long. The second time we got Lexie, who is still here (10 years old now ) within a fortnight.

Whilst you do not forget your old dog, you simply transfer your love to the new one.

If you're getting a puppy, I know now isn't a good time to buy one, the prices having shot through the roof since lockdown, but £2000 is a small price to pay for twelve or thirteen years of loyalty, companionship and love.

Lost my 7 year old Weimaraner Harry about 3 years ago, which was devastating. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with Lymphoma about two months after my son was born, tainting what should have been one of the happiest periods of my life. Harry battled on for another 4 months after that so we all got to spend one Christmas together, though.

I can honestly say nothing has rocked me as much as losing him as I don't have siblings or even had that much of a family but he was my best mate and closest confidante. All plans and ideas of this guy growing with my son were dashed instantly and watching him battle on will stay with me for the rest of my life. For weeks after I'd find myself bursting into tears randomly, not even provoked by a thought or memory of him, which I'd never experienced before or since.

Ultimately we chose to get another dog around 3 months after Harry passed (a chocolate Labrador called Hudson), who has been great for us. A completely different character and fresh set of laughs.

My only advice is to get another dog. Whether that is quickly or over some time is down to you, but IMO it will be worth it.

No need to be forking out thousands of pounds for overbred dogs the rescue centre will let you adopt a dog for what you can afford, thousands of resue dogs looking for a good home,if you live in the Blackpool area Joey, go to Easterleigh, you can even adopt a horse from there.

Mans best friend is a dog 😉

These stories are in the main very touching and I feel for you that have lost animals.

Here I must admit I found my cat after it had been runover and dead and although it upset the children when I told them, I didn't feel anything apart from sadness for the kids. I just didn't feel a love or a bond for it.
Serious question, is this normal?

His mother picked him up by his tail at birth and damaged it , sadly he was unwanted, so we will be sort of rescuing him , particularly as I have to pick him up from Plymouth :D

True, but cats are far more independent & if you’ve got a cat flap & dishes of food laid out you can more or less just go on holiday without worrying & I’ve yet to see a cat wanting it’s owner to take it out for a crap. Cats are far easier but you don’t get the same affection a dog can offer.

We sadly lost Mao several weeks ago, she got very ill very quickly and Cats apparently know when they are dying. The decision to say farewell wasn't difficult because suffering isn't an option.

I miss her every day because even though Cats aren't supposed to be bonded like a dog she was definitely special to me.

She has been my only pet and I can't bring myself to get another only to suffer the same emotions.

I really feel for those losing a Dog.

His mother picked him up by his tail at birth and damaged it , sadly he was unwanted, so we will be sort of rescuing him , particularly as I have to pick him up from Plymouth :D

I was given a Budgie for Christmas....he Loves a trip in the Car if I'm going somewhere overnight. No joke..

If I may be serious for one moment....I think putting something around a Dogs Neck and dragging it about is a terrible thing to see...an everyday occurrence that should be outlawed.

My dog was hugely influential in overcoming years of depression. They make you smile when you don’t want to and force you to go for walks. The combination of exercise and sun light being so important.

Losing the dog was devastating and the house felt cold and soulless. Within weeks I had another dog and gradually started the healing from losing a much loved pet.

Your long journey to Plymouth and back will allow "bonding" with your new found friend

My cats Sparky and Scooby died a couple of years ago

I'd had him before the kids arrived, so when they passed, it really hit home for about a week

We've got two other cats now, and they are nice, but they are not, and never will be, Sparky and Scooby
