So, I've been researching a trip to Burnley for next fall, and this was one of towns I was interested in going to (looks like you can walk to pendle hill which was another landmark i had noticed).
i planned on a taking a circuit route via bus to get there and not drive.
Are there other/better/less travelled places where I should go? I don't plan on driving (I'm american and have already experienced driving in England and don't want to do it again) and am perfectly happy to take a bus and do a decent amount of walking.
Are you going to base yourself in Burnley? How long do you normally walk?
Can walk from Burnley to Hebden Bridge, 4.5hrs, good for a wander around town/food/drink then train back to Burnley Manchester Road. No great hills but good route over the moors and through Hardcastle craggs

Can you cut down near Blake Dean and follow the river through to Hardcastle Craggs?

Frankly no.
Barley can't be beaten. Great pub, super walks around Pendle and free roadside parking in the village.
Outgoing friendly welcoming locals who are always looking to encourage weekend tourism.

Yes when you walk from Lower Gorple you can go across the fields towards Blake Dean/the pack horse pub, we always take the road from the farm house at Lower Gorple instead. At the end where it meets the Widdop Road, there are steps directly onto the river. Follow it down through Hardcastle Craggs to the cafe or Blue Pig for a pint then into Hebden.
If you come from Blake Dean you start high on the lefthand side.

It's quite a well trodden route from Burnley/Hurstwood, many start it in the morning and then have the afternoon in Hebden Bridge before the one stop train back to Burnley or bus. I've done it a number of times carrying a baby/toddler.
Will find some shorter routes which are accessible by public transport.

This is all tentatively scheduled for next fall, but my plan was to be based out of burnley (the holiday inn near the M65 looks decent). One of the days I was thinking of taking the bus up to barley, then walk to pendle hill, then hop back on the bus to head to Clitheroe, check out the castle, stop for a bite to eat then take the bus back to burnley.... this was going to take a whole day.
however, I would be interested in a decent walk, especially if it is well marked and has some sights to see along the way.

Would it be daft to walk/hike from burnley up to barley and/or pendle hill? I'd have time on my side and I'm in good shape. Public transport was a bit wonky and honestly, I wouldn't mind walking rather than taking the bus.
also...if anyone had any good walks starting in burnley, I'm up for suggestions.

Wouldn't be daft at all, as,if you say, you're not pushed for time it's a lovely (long) walk, other suggestions would be the other direction, Hurstwood over towards the Pack Horse.

Following up with two suggestions. One from Towneley Hall (worth visiting anyway) taking in the singing ringing tree with great views over Burnley and across to Pendle
www.visitlancashire.com/dbimgs/WaysideA ... eaflet.pdf
This circular is from Gawthorpe Hall next door to where Burnley FC train, on the other side of the route alongside the river you can see the training pitches. You can get the mainline bus to where the map starts or park at marker no.3 for free. Again the Hall/grounds are worth walking around

Any questions give us a shout

Thanks for the info. I’m still planning on a fall trip and have looked into things to do. I plan on taking the bus but looks like there are lots of places to walk to…
I have to chuckle a bit because of you want to categorize Americans, it’s that we drive everywhere…half mile to the grocery store? Drive. I’ve seen people make multiple circles in a parking lot waiting for the closest spot to the door, rather than parking and walking the extra 100 feet. It’s somewhat shocking to have someone describe a 4+ hour walk like it is a stroll.

It's also worth noting that if you bite off more than you can chew in terms of walking distance, a taxi anywhere from Burnley to the surrounding areas or vice-versa isn't going to break the bank.

I do it often from my home, I’m Ightenhill area, it’s a nice walk. I’ll walk with you if you’re stopping locally and fancy a guide

Padiham > Sabden - via back roads or tracks.
then Sabden to Nic of Pendle
Then either 1 - Top of Pedlle - or 2 - Drop down through a Village or two - or 3 treck to Sawley then mayybe Cltheroe?
Whalley is also a useful and fine detore to consider.
Do your Googling on these AshevilleNCClaret !
Happy to help.
Might also be available to help with transport with notice - plan etc

It's no different here. There will be plenty of parking bays two minutes stroll from the doors, yet you still see lazy people driving round and round looking for an empty bay where they can fall out of their car and land at the entrance.

I don't have alltrails but I believe I've walked it a few times when doing the Pendle 3 peaks. The section from Wycollar to Boulsworth, along the river and through the forest to the Moors is wonderful

The holiday inn was one of the places I was looking into staying… looked pretty new and clean, got good reviews, had free breakfast. It doesn’t look too central to anything but I don’t mind the walking

From the holiday in you can pretty much walk in a straight line down Ightenhill park lane until you reach the river at the bottom of the hill (not far from Gawthorpe), up towards Fence, towards Newchurch then down towards Barley, up Pendle hill and finish with lunch and a beer in the Barley Mow (get the mixed grill)
It’s a good solid walk, I’d imagine 12 miles or so, there and back

As Burnley1989 says, it's easy to walk from Ightenhill ( Holiday Inn) towards Pendle. It's a nice, quiet walk through the countryside, which I have done a few times, in the opposite direction as I walk to Burnley town centre that way. You use the network of excellent public footpaths ( rights of way) through the countryside. To get to Barley; follow Ightenhill Park Lane to the end and continue on the path keeping to the east of Gawthorpe training ground and cross the bride over Pendle Waters then follow the path straight up to Higham. That section takes about an hour at normal stroll speed. You can then take back roads( or Guide Lane) & public paths through the countryside northeast of Higham towards Ogden reservoir ( some stunning views on the way on a clear day). Just before Shekinah Christian Trust house take the footpath up over the hill and drop down to Ogden reservoir and a nice flat walk to Barley ( Higham to Barley will probably take 2 hour).
Time for refreshments in Pendle Inn
. If you're feeling up to it then you can walk up over the hills back towards Fence, taking path through woods to the east of Newchurch and drop down to Jinny Lane then up the next hill towards the TV mast and drop down to Fence. If you are feeling tired you can always hop in the Bus 66 in Barley ( every 2 hours) which brings you to Nelson or, if you make it to Fence, the Bus 65 back to Burnley ( every 2 hours) - which actually eventually goes via Gannow Lane/ Ightenhill area on way to Burnley town centre. If your planning to walk over summer time I'd be happy to meet up and walk with you on the route.

Just to add the hotel might look out of town but is well located, especially without a car.
There's a foot bridge over the motorway to the mainline bus connecting all the town centres (Colne to Padiham) and Burnley Barracks train station, probably 5mins in foot. It is just off the motorway junction too. The town centre is 10-15min walk. Pretty certain there is a bus that goes down Pendle Way from Burnley but the thick-necks will know better.

No before the Mow, same side as 4x4 garage.
I parked further up last week though... apprentice was a bit nervous parking up when I moved the cone as a local watched on and was tutting

I remember a Bournemouth away match, lots of years ago now. All the roads were coned, as they always are. However, once road had cars parked. Got to the end and a couple of cone piles, stacked of course. I parked and moved them behind. Whole road got parked on!

Just finished a walk in and around Barley.
Usual collection of dog crap everywhere, some in bags and some not.
Empty wrappers and tins tossed to one side.
Cars dumped here and there, including on double yellow lined passing places.
I thought to myself, who does that? Then up pops the self styled Leader of the Cricket Field bragging about moving the cones.
Say no more.

Maybe get out and clear the crap up? Show some community spirit instead of curtain twitching.
Report parking issues to Police if you're that bothered?
Big hand for Macca, shifting the cones. Direct action..we need more of this. Residents don't own the road in Barley anymore than the paupers in Nelson or Brierfield own theirs.

I can't say I'd be comfortable posting that picture if my car was so disgusting
Looks more like a works van to me than a car

Then it's a good job it's not mine, nor is it a car.
Other than that, you're spot on

Maybe get out and clear the crap up? Show some community spirit instead of curtain twitching.
Report parking issues to Police if you're that bothered?
Big hand for Macca, shifting the cones. Direct action..we need more of this. Residents don't own the road in Barley anymore than the paupers in Nelson or Brierfield own theirs.
You'll be spewing in June when residents only parking is introduced in the Village. Macca will have to pick on some other elderly people somewhere else with his tedious ******* shite.
