Dead mans shoes movie

Post by karatekid » Fri Dec 18, 2020 7:47 pm

I’ve been looking to stream this on either Amazon, now tv or Netflix but can’t find it on any of them. Has it been banned or summat? 😟

My all time favourite film, I’ve watched it time and time again and I never tire of watching it. I’ve got the Shane Meadows DVD set which is how I have to resort to watching it now as when I upgraded to Sky Q I lost the recording I had and, like you, it’s not on any outlet.

It certainly hasn’t been banned - on the contrary, it should be a must watch for everyone!

Here you go.
It was on demand All 4.

But it is on in January (then back on All 4 probably).

The only film I’ve ever watched twice in a day.

the story is quite good but the acting, as with most meadows films, is car-crash bad.

i assume he has an improvisational approach when it comes to dialogue but the actors he uses are just useless.

Also agree with that. But looked beyond that at the story which was a great point IMO.

Toby Kebbell and Paddy Considine are fantastic in it.

Many especially in his early work were not actors then.
The ones that were barely got paid and did the work as they liked the rolls. Plus budgets were so small.

BFI + C4/Film4 and Warp Records/Film basically funded them/him after some short films he self made on mostly a zero budget

The Arts are all about opinions and interpretation but I cannot see your point around the acting. Kebbell is nothing less that outstanding, very closely followed by Considine and even Wolfenden is very very good in large parts.

It’s a fantastic film, made on a budget that probably wouldn’t pay for a weeks filming of a Hollywood blockbuster and the story? Well. Wow. It happens. It’s still happening sadly. But it is so powerful and is all done in about 80 minutes.

Edited - sorry, that’s not to say I disrespect your views on the acting, just disagree. That’s what life is all about.

fair enough. i thought apart from the two main characters (considine and kebbell) the rest were outright awful. i remembered stuart wolfenden from corrie and that lad is no actor. if jo hartley is an actor then i suppose i am too.

but like you say, opinions.

Good Lord, I think we’ve both managed a reasonable discussion between ourselves without resorting to insult. For those watching, see - it can be done!

I watched Get Carter last year. It is, or was, on Amazon Prime. What a film - the acting, the script, the cinematography and last but not least, the awesome mood setting music.

Agreed. I'm not a film lover generally and tend not to watch many films more than once but Ive seen this 5/6 times over the years. Enjoy it every time, some great Caine quotes as well ("p888holes in the snow"; "You're a big man but..."). The phone conversation with Britt Ekland character sticks in the memory. Newcastle makes a great backdrop too.

Cannot bring myself to watch the "remake".

I know what you mean. Why anyone want to remake such a timeless classic of the British film industry is beyond me.

Both excellent films. Dark but in parts hilarious. I don't think the acting is that bad. I think theres a sort of gritty realism to them, especially with the accents. They almost feel like fly on the wall.

What's being 16 years old got to do with it? Are you saying the older a film is the more likely it is to be crap lol?

Theres another gritty English film called The Selfish Giant. Filmed on the council estates in Bradford. Really good film.

Just wondered how it scored on IMDB and First review on IMDB says "A masterpiece that will hit you like a brick", second review says "A Kes for the 21st Century".

Left my copy of the dvd on an Accy Clarets coach a few years ago, back in the day when we had a film or two to watch instead of uncivilised music blaring out from the front of the bus, 😉

Just watched this today because I recorded it off the recommendations on here.

Utter garbage is all I can say. I’ve seen cardboard cutout coppers at Asda with more acting skills than this lot. The plot was thin at best, and poorly interpreted if at all.

Not for me I’m afraid.

I watched it a couple of weeks ago on the strength of the recommendations on here, plus I really enjoyed Tyrannosaur a few years back which I thought was excellent. I did quite enjoy Dead Man's Shoes up to a point, even though it's definitely proper odd, but I'd told the wife it was coming on and persuaded her to watch it too and after about 4 and half minutes she stormed off muttering about "crap, garbage, rubbish, drivel and never again....." (So not the worst result tbh!!)

I once recommended The Green Mile to a chum at work as he had never seen it. A couple of weeks later he told me he watched it but found it slow and boring. All opinions are subjective I suppose.

Recorded Dead Man's Shoes based on recommendations and finally got round to watching it yesterday.
Thought it was brilliant. Some of the acting may not be stellar, but thought the main couple of actors, Considine in particular, were outstanding.
Powerful story, and didn't see the twist coming at the end, familiar though it may have been.

I’ve never seen The Green Mile. Is it any good? I wasn’t impressed with the book, compared to Stephen King’s earlier work.

I keep thinking I should probably give it a go at some point.

Each to their own I guess but which film's opening lines are:

"Can I help you mate? What you looking at?"
"I'm looking at you, ya C**T".

Love it! Gritty drama, truly awful story that sadly unfortunately happens in real life, great twist at the end.

Ironically, despite some posts to the contrary below yours, imo "The Green Mile" is one of numerous excellent books which don't quite make the same impact (or any impact!) on the screen. I could list hundreds tbh, but "The Devil All the Time" and "The Light Between Oceans" are two recent others which spring immediately to mind. Absolutely brilliant books, as is "The Green Mile", but really haven't made great films.

Each to their own I guess but which film's opening lines are:

"Can I help you mate? What you looking at?"
"I'm looking at you, ya C**T".

Love it! Gritty drama, truly awful story that sadly unfortunately happens in real life, great twist at the end.
