Only found that it's on tonight (5 mins in) by chance on channel 5, started at 9.00. The holiday special (Christmas). It's good so far. Anyway if you've missed it you can pick it up on +1 channel 5 - 10.00 p.m.

Great programme, glad a second season is planned.
If they can keep coming up with the storylines it could run for years.

Funny thing Is the wife and I have been watching the original series from 1978, there were 7 seasons, with around 13 episodes in each season. They are all available online, and very good.

Sunday nights back in the day a feelgood tv series.

We never saw it when it first time around, but have been watching it lately, an episode every other day, it’ll take us about 6 months to get through them at this rate.

Highly recommend the books. Very funny. I can't help thinking life was better when things were more simple. Pre internet and modern tech. Or maybe that's just middle aged nostalgia.

Makes you want to fancy a trip to Grassington.

Bumping this as the 2nd series is now well underway, and given the high viewing figures by Channel 5 standards, hopefully they'll be planning a few more.

If like me you missed series 1, all the episodes are available on My 5 to stream at your leisure.

Ideal family viewing at a gentle pace with fabulous scenery to boot, what's not to like.

I watched the first series and have recorded all episodes (three I think) from the second series. Spot on tiger76 with the gentle pace and I think they are a joy to watch.

The series I’ve noticed is also available on audibles I’m assuming it’s the same apart from not being able to watch it.

Had missed this starting (2nd series) so thankfully its on 'My5' as Tiger pointed out so enjoyed watching ep1 s2 on Thursday evening ... and will catch up over the next few evenings

I enjoyed the Channel 5 programmes too but they changed some things from the BBC series, notably Mrs Hall. I can't help thinking making her attractive as opposed to a grandmotherly type is a bit of artistic licence to cater for the modern woman and for randy men.

Cant agree with you at all. Woke trash? Regurgitated? Its a new series. More importantly its been a smash hit, rendering comments that might have been made had the BBC aired it to the minority.

Question you might ask is why did the BBC not air it? Another question you might ask yiurself is why are there so many repeats on the BBC?

Why then?

From what I read about the BBC series, James Herriot, the author, was very strict that the script complied with the books. When the BBC extended the series beyond the books he still kept things tight. They also produced The Young James Herriot.

Maybe therefore the BBC felt they'd done enough with the works, or perhaps since the author is now dead the current owners allow more freedom for drama.

One 'problem' I can see for the BBC from watching it, is the casts' lack of the ethnic diversity and disability inclusion that the current trend seems to require; something that is difficult to achieve whilst still maintaining a degree of realism in a story set in the Yorkshire Dales during the 1930s. I read somewhere that the Pekingese shown isn't 'historically accurate' as the hairy all over bit is a modern trend, whereas back then they were kept short-haired other than around their heads - "like a lion's mane"? I don't know enough about dogs to confirm that, so perhaps ********.

I think the BBC perceived it as having run its course. Bad call - if the BBC had aired it, it certainly wouldn't have been to a "minority", it'd be yet another BBC hit pulling in 5-7 million viwers easily. They missed out.

Why so many repeats ? I wouldn't know, I don't watch them. I just go for the new, successful stuff they do. A nice - looking drama tonight.....
I suspect it's down to lack of funding as much as anything. Maybe the pandemic, that seems to be the go-to excuse trotted out these days.

The only thing I’ve seen I didn’t like was the beer being served… it was flat a headless, northerners would never have accepted that southern ale.

The bowling was borderline "chucking", too.

Yes I think you are right. Maybe its regarded as being too British as well and that doesn't go well with certain London Metro types

One thing if the BBC thought the new series had run its course they were badly mistaken. Its been a smash hit. Because it is quintessentially British its been a hit in USA also. They like that but London Metros dont. Anyway BBC missed out because of their innate prejudices, which in some cases are anti British.

Salford Metros.....Mmmmm, not convinced but go on then, I'll bite. Give us some real examples of what you're talking about.

In the mean time, a random look at last Saturday's peak time viewing on BBC 1 and 2 comprises....the Hit List, Strictly, Blankety Blank, Casualty, News , MOTD, Dad's Army, Africa's Lion Kings, Scotland's Lochs, QI, Jools Holland - a real hotbed of repeated anti-British sentiment there....


Anyway, ACGaS is indeed excellent if rather romanticised viewing.

It's well known that films and TV, not to mention adverts, can be used to manipulate our views as well as entertain. If a viewer sees something in these productions that suggest this is going on there's no reason why it shouldn't be commented on.

I absolutely adore the series.

My family love it. Stayed in Grassington in the spring and enjoyed spotting the different locations. They were disappointed that we had missed seeing filming by a few days though. Apparently I live in the same town as one of the cast, but I've never seen them.
