Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Just seen in the Burnley Express that Bernie Grime, chemistry teacher at BGS has passed away. He terrified me as a first year, but I spoke to him a few times out and about over the past couple of years and found him a really nice bloke, remembered me even though I was a pupil in the 60s.
RIP Bernie.
RIP Bernie.

RIP Mr Grime not Grimes as he would remind us all. Agree Chobulous, terrified me as a fist year but a good chemistry teacher. I would never have been a to cook my crystal meth without my basic knowledge of chemistry.

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
I have only a vague recollection of him (and -yes- my recollection is "Grimes"). I dropped Chemistry before O' level so that would explain things.
I think it's probably good that you have a bit of fear of teachers, when they're too soft schoolkids will take the p*** and mess about and maybe not concentrate on the learning. (Not condoning complete bullying from teachers here).
RIP Mr Grime (Sir).

I saw him in at Tesco last year and when I spoke to him I couldn’t bring myself to address him as anything other than Mr Grime. He was never a bully, just had a quiet authority about him.

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Agree, definitely not a bully, unlike one or two of the other teachers at that time such as Mel Saunders
Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
With respect, keep it on topic, there’s been plenty said about other teachers at BGS

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Apologies. I think I missed those other threads.
Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
I remember I was in the lower 6th form and I turned up in a yellow Ben Sherman shirt under my blazer. He took one look and decided to have an impromptu uniform inspection. He went through everyone else in the class looking at every aspect of their uniform before he got to me. I was proper squirming but he just said, “What flavour is that shirt Longworth, peppermint white tomorrow if you don’t mind”
Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Sad to hear the news about Mr Grime. He was always pleasant towards me and after I was carried off to hospital in a BGS football match he came to my home check on me that evening. RIP

RIP Mr Grime. Truly, a gentleman amongst the staff at BGS when I was a pupil, ‘74- ‘77.

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
When we were leaving he said: "You can call me Bernard now," so from that day on we addressed him as Mr Now.
I spoke to him just over a year ago. My first thought was that he couldn't possibly be as old as 80 but then I realised he taught me in my first year at BGS and I'm 69 now.

Wow that brings back memories. Taught me in the early sixties, started in 62 at BGS, never terrified of him but always a healthy respect. Good teacher though. Saw him only once since school and that was also in Tesco. Both just nodded and said hello. I think neither of us unsure at first where the connection was. RIP "Bernard"

Mel must be a similar age now because he was there when I started in 1963. He once hit me with a board duster on the side of the head. My only crime was to have dozed off. Well I had been to Stoke the night before for the League Cup.Volvoclaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 8:57 pmAgree, definitely not a bully, unlike one or two of the other teachers at that time such as Mel Saunders

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
A proper Chemistry Master. He was supervising us at School Camp down at Ladram Bay when he got rat arsed off scrumpy from the farm. He fell down and everyone had some sport with him. Mogger got his guitar out and did an impromptu version ov Sloop John B - "we sailed with the slewed Ron P, the campers Molly and me ....." He tried to be a little tough un but he was fine really. RIP Molly (as in molecule).

Not from Burnley area until later in my life but that is some procession of respectful comments for a guy most of you knew half a century ago. Must have been an inspiring teacher. I had similar experiences of teachers at school, some I'd rather forget and some I'm glad of. RIP.

We used to call all the Chemistry lot "Avogadros"
Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Didn't know him being an ex Ted's pupil but nice to read the compliments about him and let's face it without teachers like him inspiring future scientists we wouldn't be world leaders in vaccine technology, medicine and chemical engineering. We owe his like do much. RIP.

Really very sad news . He taught me for A level and O level . Strict guy but really quite inspiring .... enough so that I did Chemistry at Uni and went on to become a Chemistry teacher ... he taught me between 79 and 84 ... also my form tutor and I think did a good job with me . Great teacher ! RIP Mr Grime

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Bernie Grime’s first year at BGS as a teacher was in 1962-63, my first year at the school.
He took my form for Maths, never knew he was a chemistry teacher later on.
One of his claims to fame was he was co-founder, along with the aforementioned Mel Saunders, of the Wednesday League, for those in the 5th and both sixth forms not in the school teams to play competitive games among themselves on Wednesday afternoons while those in the school teams held their ‘elite’ sessions.
Strangely enough the last place I saw him was Tesco, Like others who have posted

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
First period, first year with him - put his briefcase on the desk pulled out a pump and slammed it on the desk. " this is my slipper and it's called ward 10 because I only use it in emergencies". No hint of joke just a stern look. Think of it what you will but that's my abiding memory of him.
Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
RIP Mr Grime. I started in 63 and remember those teachers with Weapons! I can’t remember him using it and over the years had great respect for him and got me through A Level. When leaving the Match always thought of him driving along Brunshaw/Red Lees Rd. Remember the football at school. there were some happy days.

Very sad. Damn good teacher and despite being seemingly cross, if you got to know him he was a genuinely nice guy. I think the standard/behaviour of pupils got to him when the punk era kicked in. That was the end of respectful students

Re: Bernie Grime BGS- RIP
Bernie Grimes was part of a really decent bunch of Chemistry teachers. Mr Emmott and Gordon Allison were all teachers I respected.
I remember one of our class swapping a chair and putting a broken chair at the front. Bernie came in sat on the chair and it collapsed. He was off work for months. Everytime I bumped into him in Burnley he always had a smile.
Sorry to hear of his passing.
