I'm baffled why England are favourites for the Euro's, there's several teams I'd fancy above them this summer, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal to name just a few, and I honestly can't see England beating any of those in a major tournament, elwaclaret wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:33 pmCannot help laughing at Lee Dixon (?)and the other guy talking about England winning the championship... when did England last look good against a top team... while you can only beat them in front of you, let’s remember it’s San Marino
Pope got his expected clean sheet anyway, now we'll have to wait and see if he keeps his place.
Re: Pope
I have this funny feeling that Southgate will play Henderson in the next game, hoping he’ll have much more to do than Nick, who was basically a spectator this evening. Giving Henderson a chance to impress!

Re: Pope
You may well be right, I don't know how good Albania are, but they won away from home tonight, and whoever is in goal will surely have more to do than Nick did tonight.
The real test for England in this round of games is obviously Poland, Lewandowski and Co will really give England's defenders a tough evening.

England arguably have the best the squad, for me I just don’t think tactically have the ability to win it.tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:39 pmI'm baffled why England are favourites for the Euro's, there's several teams I'd fancy above them this summer, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal to name just a few, and I honestly can't see England beating any of those in a major tournament,

Belgium arnt the same force they were at the last World Cup.
France have an incredible squad will most likely reach the final if not win it.
Germany, young squad but some very decent players.
Italy, not sure they are going to do much pretty average squad these days.
Portugal are my dark horses, they have some really good players in that squad

Re: Pope
England do not have the best squad. As Barney Ronay quite rightly points out in his article yesterday: England have young players who will surely reach a high level. Foden may already be there. But it is worth bearing in mind only 13 of 26 players in Southgate’s current squad played in this season’s Champions League. None of them have won it. Nineteen – nineteen! – have never won a major trophy. Compare this with 20 current Champions League players in Germany’s squad, including seven from last season’s winners.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:53 pmEngland arguably have the best the squad, for me I just don’t think tactically have the ability to win it.

Re: Pope
If Italy can keep everyone fit they've got a very good squad. A bit light up top but quality midfield & defence and an excellent manager who has turned them round in 2 years. I'm following them closely. The Euros should be good to see how far they've progressed since not qualifying for the WC a few years ago.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 9:53 pmEngland arguably have the best the squad, for me I just don’t think tactically have the ability to win it.

Re: Pope
If I was a manager and could pick any squad to manage in the Euros it would be England.
We won't win it because Southgate is a class C manager who has lost his bottle.

He swallowed the youth thing and will always fail, as a result, when experienced hardened internationals gobble up his boys.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 10:47 pmIf I was a manager and could pick any squad to manage in the Euros it would be England.

Response..."Although we did not progress as far as we would like, these young players have gained a lot. during the tournament, which will stand them and us in good stead, going forward ".
The new group of youngsters do the same next time and the statement is repeated.

Sky Sports England player ratings gave Pope N/A
Nothing but a spectator in the game
Could have least gave him 1 just for playing

Re: Pope
Mings showed his class ballooning a header when in a good scoring opportunity then mugging a San Marino player to earn the games only booking. He is a weak link making Maguire look pure class in comparison but another media pick which will be England's undoing. We dont play our best performers just the ones the pundits fancy.
Re: Pope
You know Kalvin Phillips and Connor Coady have started our last few games, right?
We have a massive, massive gulf of quality in the middle of the park.

Re: Pope
I don’t agree let’s be honest when everyone is fit and we are not playing pointless games they will barely feature. a Euros squad midfield of Rice, Foden, Grealish, Bellingham, Henderson, Phillips
With the potential inclusion of Alli, Lingard etc.. is actually a pretty awesome group of players to select from.
I still think CB is not as bad as people make out.
Stone and Maguire will be the back two and they are both arguably in the top 10-15 CBS in world football right now.
You then have back up CBS like coady and Mings that can do a job

Anybody keep count of the times Pope touched the ball last night, did it even get into double figures, why do they still have these mismatched games...how we didnt score double figures really is a mystery.

I kept count of the number of times Stones passed the ball backwards or square in the 1st half - 13 - against one of the weakest teams in the world.

Re: Pope
There will be a stat somewhere in the media today that states he’s the best passer of the ball in the squad because of this. Won’t tell the full story tho will it?SalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 26, 2021 10:09 amI kept count of the number of times Stones passed the ball backwards or square in the 1st half - 13 - against one of the weakest teams in the world.
It’s why I’m not really a fan of “stats”.

Re: Pope
It really depends if the statisticians want to tell the whole truth. Most folks keeping stats today differentiate between forward and progressive passes vs. back passes vs. passes in and into the opponents final third or passes in their own half. I like stats for that reason.

I counted 3 touches in the first half
I don't think he touched the ball at all in the second half (though I did look away for a moment and might have missed a touch)

Re: Pope
Friday's Times quoted 5 touches - none when he came forward out of his area.
ITV mentioned Nick wanting to "join in" at one of the corners towards the end of the game. Did anyone see if he got beyond half way?
Playing again against Albania and Poland. Gareth Southgate says this was always the plan.

Re: Pope
Gareth is bonkers stating this info, even if he does know his preferred starting XI, why broadcast that fact to the media and the players.
Firstly you never know what will happen with injuries and loss of form, and secondly he should be dangling the carrot of a starting place to all the squad.
In my view the only players nailed on to start if fit are the following, Kane, Jordan Henderson, Shaw, Stones, for me every other spot is up for grabs.
And if GS already knows his starting XI what is the point of even having a squad, the guy's crackers and he'll hopefully be shown up for the fraud he is this summer, he got lucky in 2018, and yet still couldn't even reach the final, he won't get lucky in the Euro's, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if England get as far as the quarter-final stage.
