The Talbot

Post by bfcbri » Fri Apr 09, 2021 2:41 pm

Not sure if this has been mentioned previously but seen on twitter earlier that the Talbot is up for sale to be converted in to flats

This will be a sad loss to the pre match drinkers that go in there and the loss of another pub :(

Looks like a lot of people will need to find a new place for pre match refreshment

There used to be a good pub in Market Harborough called The Talbot up until the mid/late 90s. The smell of cannabis used to almost knock you out when you walked in.

It will be a sad loss to the town. I always thought more could have been done to attract an indie scene in regard to the bands they used to put on. Maybe they tried this, but if they did, it passed me by. Music wise, it seemed to cater for an ever diminishing group of people. Every time I drove by it was the same old bands on the billboard outside the pub.

There's a big cellar downstairs. It would make a great microbrew pub. Get the beer right, get the food right, and it could be a goldmine, but such a plan would require some serious financial backing and buying the building, plus renovation would be an expensive undertaking. Such a shame to see another pub go.

Plans for flats haven't been passed yet.

You can still save your pub.

Sad to lose another good pub but who would want to live in flats in that particular area?

The Talbot owners are exploring all possible future options. They don’t know if planning would be granted, just as they don’t know when they will be able to open as a pub with bands on. Nothing is decided.

Sadly it seems you are in the minority.

Played darts and pool in there a few times, aswell as watched a few bands too, and usually quite busy.
However mustn't be getting the trade needed to keep it afloat.

It's not really a locals type pub with a lack of residents around the area probably contributing.

Agreed. I had some mates come over from Rochdale a couple of years ago and they loved it there. No other places around that will cater for such a range of music

I seem to remember it had a nightclub(!?) in the cellar? Many a happy night in the early 80’s!

And still good on a Saturday eve after a Clarets home game........

Great pub in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Probably like many that have closed in and around town not been helped by the 24 hours drinking law.

Probably an anachronism. Pre match drinkers will create their own market and new pubs outlets will be there to serve them.

Poor location I think for flats.

Poor parking, busy roads and that area isnt great with
run down housing, takeaways, taxi ranks and empty shops.
It only seems to be getting worse.

The sandy gate area seems a decent ish location but a few bits around it now need improvement, that has potential to be really nice round there which ticks all the boxes you mentioned above with views, buildings and links

Yeah, I imagine through the week it's barely worth them opening. I've even been in on some Friday nights where it's been quiet. So basically relying on having a busy Saturday and Sunday every week just to break even? Can see why they want to sell I suppose.

Where is the lad that can knock ale out at 50p a pint, he will sort it....

On a serious note, the pubs and clubs that seem to be really struggling are the ones in big old buildings. The overheads of just heating, lighting and maintaining these places are crippling them. The smaller sites seem to do ok.

The Talbot is probably a perfect example, it will take some looking after that place.

The pub and rooms above were up for sale a couple of years ago for around 600k.

Must think they can get more money with planning permission for flats?

Jack Nadin's book, Burnley Inns and Taverns (2007) names some 199 pubs in Burnley down the years. Jacks book was published in 2007 after which several more have closed. Theres only the Coach and Horses open (or was before lockdown) on Church street I think now.

Used to like the Talbot on a Friday night. Although got a bit bored when the band every week was classic/soft rock. Although they did mix it up once in a blue moon with bands like Complete Control etc.

The cellar downstairs was a nightclub in the 80s - we’ll probably around 1984 it was.

Not for us is that place. Very little going for it in terms of location and very little other pubs around it to create a circuit. Also it’s to far away to walk into town.

Shame really but for pubs to work location is key. People aren’t willing to get out the car for food nowadays never mind walk 15 mins to the next pub

It wasn’t always soft rock or soul tribute bands. I remember seeing The Winchesters there on more than one occasion. Always a good night when they were playing. Carl I bet I was there at Sid’s Cellar on your 17th birthday maybe with John Derbyshire and Adie Hoyle

Nah there's confusion here - 4,000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire.

Just the 1 shithole - the town - and always in it, not even 5 seconds away.
