Self Driving Cars to be allowed on UK roads later this year.

Interesting development here.
Going to see some changes to the road laws, insurance requirements etc.

Good to see that there will be a maximum speed limit being set initially.

I'm going to assume they won't be any use on roundabouts though..

How far are we off where you order a cab at the end of a night on the lash and a taxi turns up with no driver in it :D

This is the new beginning of an automotive revolution, I predict in 15 years, only car enthusiasts will own a vehicle. Everyone else will subscribe to a service that takes you to where you need to go

I read an article suggesting that for people living in cities where parking and charging spots would be limited.

It will be very exciting for the techno minded generation. Until of course the Insurance company have to pay out their first £million claim and then price it out of reach for all but the very silly :D

Cars with automatic gear boxes are still not as popular as 'geared cars' in the UK even though automatics have been around for 60 years ( a guess.) On that basis I cannot see how people who like driving will take to these 'new fangled' things. I'm still irritated that my newish car has no CD player!

IF a taxi turns up without a driver I think most of us will not be getting in.

Tesla gave a free trial of their enhanced autopilot last week and I would struggle to give it 1 out of 10.

It struggled badly with sharp turns because it is the cameras not the sat nav map that is used, so approaching a turn at 50mph it would suddenly play a jingle informing me I had to take over quickly. It also struggled passing cyclists - slowing to about 10mph and looking nervous at straddling the centre white line (if a computer can look nervous).

At the end of the journey (10 miles to the golf club) I was far more tired than if I had driven. The whole point of autonomous is that the car doesn’t do anything weird, and I can’t see that as possible on our old windy roads with unusual things every mile or two - motorway perhaps, in time.

The Tesla is a fantastic car, but as regards self driving, I think we are a long, long way away.

Does anyone use the auto park system on their car?

My dad has one but has never trusted it to use, and he doesn't like reading instructions to convince himself.

ah yes, self drive cars, the terrorist hackers new best friend - you don't even have to cause massive pile-ups - just gridlock the road system to create economic turmoil, all without even having to get out of bed

I had FSD in Q1 as a 2020 end of year incentive - never used it beyond autopilot - think the US drivers get more from it but still in BETA so still being tested. Don't think even if it did work well, I would trust it and would get the feeling of having to be 2nd guessing what it was going to do.

Autopilot is quite good - where it keeps you in lane and steers and keeps your distance from the car in front and have used that a few times down the motorways but to overtake, change lanes etc, I want to be in control of that.

Self driving cars will, in time, reduce accidents and deaths on our roads.
It won't take them down to 0 because somethings cannot be prevented.

Also, makes it easier for some people to traverse the country, as some people can't drive for varying health reasons.

Imagine shipping goods by lorry for example.
Load it, send it on its way during the night and it doesn't need to stop like humans do at present.
This can be applied to buses, trains and then eventually air travel.

Great, so that's a load of lorry drivers out of work then.
I am totally against it (Luddite), but av serious question: How do these vehicles avoid collision?

Listened to a recent Freakonomics podcast today and it was notionally about roundabouts (the US is slowly realising they are cheaper, quicker and safer than traffic lights but there is a psychological barrier).

They moved onto self driving cars for a few minutes and suggested driver psychology would also be the big thing slowing it down as well. Drivers simply don’t want to trust it - and won’t even when it is miles better.

Utterly pointless!
Some things are just invented because they can be. No thought to whether there's an actual purpose.

I just don’t see the point. As said on BBC this morning you have to have two hands on the wheel, so just drive the bloody thing.

Just as a little interest (possibly), my Tesla has the original Autopilot, so far from FSD. However, given that I am assured of staying in lane and the distance U decide, from the car in front, it feels very safe, on the motorway. As a result, the attention switches to the adjacent lane(s) and enables a better all round driving control and safety.

FSD would be handy to fet home, after a late night Turf Moor match!

Ps Roundabouts give car a nervous breakdown!

All new cars from a certain year have lane assist and anti collision sensors.
If you look at any new car you'll see the anti collision sensor in the front bumper, near to the front number plate.
With newer cars it's a legal requirement to get the sensors realigned if you have suspension work, a windscreen replaced or wing mirrors.
Not all main dealers have the equipment to do this either.
If the work isn't done, insurance can be invalid.

The next stage involves more sensors and intelligent cameras, which is what companies like Tesla have been trying to perfect.

Vehicles have been moving away from mechanical systems for decades now, the k12 Nissan Micra from about 2002 ish had an electric steering column, as did the Fiat Punto from a few years earlier.

In regards to Lorry drivers, that is unfortunately a consequence of going to a more automated society, same with factory workers and even retail shops when you see Amazon have opened a store that doesn't have a check out, you scan with your phone and it deducts from your amazon account when you leave the store.

Chesters point is about remote hacking, which has been a concern for years tbh.
So you could be driving your car and then suddenly someone takes over and crashes it before you do anything.

This was a concern raised a couple of years ago.

For people who take no joy from driving and as a result remain poor at it, this is perfect for them.

For people like me, who really enjoy driving, its not ideal, but personally I can see the advantages of it and I'm looking forward to it for things like going to see family around the country and football games.

The benefits are obvious. Less accidents, less fatalities, less congestion. How close it is to being implemented I don’t know. I wasn’t around 50 odd years ago but I suspect there were a lot of people who doubted that we could ever land a man on the moon.

Technology advances exponentially and no doubt our roads will operate completely differently in 50 years time.

the greatest benefit for intelligent autonomous vehicles is the potential for a Hive mind scenario whereby each car communicates with all the cars in its vicinity via some sort of WiFi protocol to communicate in real time any changes to the action of that car to its neighbours. They can all then as a "Hive" function optimally for the needs of all the vehicles that are trying to reach different destinations.

It is also the greatest obstacle too when you consider privacy issues.

It's not like people are really good at driving at the moment. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people die in car accidents each year, tens of thousands of people are injured. Stories like this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-l ... e-56872136 show just how bad at driving people are. If it was something other than driving causing all these deaths and injuries then people would be well on board for trying to solve the problem.

I was responding to a fellow Tesla owner who I would hope understood the terminology.

FSD = Full Self Driving and normally comes in at just under £7k cost if you want it on a Tesla

Q1 = Quarter one, a common term used to describe the first 3 months of the year.

2020 = The year that preceded the current year of 2021

End of year incentive = This explains why I got the FSD free

So putting it all together.

I got Full Self Driving for the first 3 months of this year as part of the 2020 end of year incentive when I bought my Tesla.

I've already got park assist and sensors, in the form of reflexes and eyesight.
