Is this really a surprise? We have a competent Premier League squad. He's happy with our goalkeepers, fullbacks, central midfield and strikers. He needs an extra centre back if Tarkowski leaves and we need better winger options but that's about it.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 12:54 pmProject dampen expectations has begun.

A couple of genuine first team players is all we need, as long as none other than Tarky depart.
Then it's about having one eye on 12 months time, so 2 or 3 young ish squad players, that get bits of action but are mainly being primed for starting week in week out the season after.

I was fully expecting at least 5 signings this summer.
We need 2 CBs, 2 wingers, 1 CM as an absolute minimum.

I'm certainly not confident we'll do it but it we use this season as a baseline and think we only need to make one or two signings then we may not be as lucky next time round.
We've been absolutely woeful at times this year and so far have (just) got away with it. Setting myself up for disappointment perhaps but it's clear we don't have a big enough squad, we need another 4 players... At least.

Gibson will need replacing and Lennon still hasnt been replaced, and if any or all of Tarkowski/McNeiil and Pope go, they will need replacing too.

Last season we had Gibson, Hart, Hendrick and Lennon on the books. There's no doubt we need more squad depth if we are to stay out of trouble, and probably need some signings to improve the starting 11.
We're about 6 players short of the number we had in our 17-18 and 18-19 season.
We've seen this season how much injuries can put us in trouble, and the squad isn't going to get any better at resisting them getting older.

We've added two in terms of numbers to the four your refer to with Norris and Stephens added to the squad. We've still got 21 players out of the maximum of 25 permitted.superdimitri wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 4:02 pmDefinitely. And if Tarkowski is certain to go we could need another.

Yes, so we are 4 short of registering a full squad without any outgoings which is what we need to aim for, and what are competitors will have over us if we don't make signings. Depending on departures and age if in-comings, that could be as much as 6 new bodies needed.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 4:15 pmWe've added two in terms of numbers to the four your refer to with Norris and Stephens added to the squad. As we've seen, its been costly having a squad size of 21 and our reluctance to improve squad depth and quality has meant we've struggled at times this season. If we enter next season with 21 again, we may not be so lucky.

Re: Linked with..
I think we all know that the problems between Dyche & Garlick has hampered recruitment. Dyche constantly said we needed new players last summer, didn't get them and then suffered the worst season on record in terms of injuries although I think most clubs have. That problem was worse for us because of the lack of recruitment last summer. I think with a full, proper, pre-season this time we won't suffer the same injuries but we do need a good window, that's for sure.superdimitri wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 4:32 pmYes, so we are 4 short of registering a full squad without any outgoings which is what we need to aim for, and what are competitors will have over us if we don't make signings. I agree Tony. What I'm afraid of is the club using this season as a baseline and thinking along the lines of 'if we did it with this squad, then we don't need that much recruitment' - When in fact its been a long time coming that we need to have a good window.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 4:47 pmI think we all know that the problems between Dyche & Garlick has hampered recruitment. So despite needing a few players in that's why I'm not keeping my hopes up, I feel we'll be bare-bones again, but with some luck if we do make only 1 or 2 signings they will be players who improve our first 11 and are injury resistant.

The new owners will be judged over a period of time through all aspects of the club. I would think their main tasks will be generating the money commercially that will then help support the transfer Windows.

Not really sure why them suggestions are so out there.
After this season we will be left with Mee and Long at CB. Therefore need 2 back up CBs as a minimum (hopefully 1 first team CB)
We will also be left with 2 wide players in McNeil and Gudmundsson. So we need to wide players as backup.
CM in my opinion is critical this summer, we have 3 CMs that are deemed good enough. They are ok options but if we are to compete we need to improve on our ageing options.
Therefore a total of 5 players as an absolute minimum required.

Re: Linked with..
I don't understand why you have got concerns. Because new owners have come in and not spent a fortune in a window that was opening immediately they took over, a window that proved very difficult for virtually every other club, you seemed to have got a downer on them. Give them chance, if they fail and make a mess then I'll join you in being critical but there is absolutely nothing as yet to be able to form an opinion on them other than they've got rid of Neil Hart which is bonus points as far as I'm concerned.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 10:08 pmI don’t know Tony, that’s why I was asking if you have heard anything to ease the concerns.

Not sure why posters worry about other people's worries. Always found that odd.
After the new board suggested there was incomings in January and then it didn't quite happen, maybe that has made people to have concerns/doubts. Coupled with our own last few transfer windows I can imagine why people have questions.
Also suggested further above that posters were expecting a sugar daddy type to sign £££ players. I don't think anyone expected that, just hoped we'd find a board that might invest a little more in the playing side. I still believe had Garlick signed one or two players and kept 40-50m at bank rather than 70-80m we'd be in a different position and people would be looking at him in a different light.

There were numerous posts on this message board, and stories in the Daily Press also, expressing an eagerness for the takeover to be completed before the 1st January so that funds would be available for that window. Otherwise, why all the excitement for the takeover to be completed by 1st January if not to provide funds for that window?

Re: Linked with..
Problem with this is unless they know they are much better than the current XI no ones going to come. Quality players wont come just to pad out the squad unless they’re on the downturn in age (and then everyone moans because of age anyway). Everyone knows Dyche doesn’t rotate. So basically you’re saying sign 5 players that will dislodge 5 first teamers (team spirit destroyed) or 5 players that will end up like Gibson (not playing, unhappy, moaning) but times FIVENewcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 9:58 pmNot really sure why them suggestions are so out there.

Re: Linked with..
People, including myself were desperate for the takeover to be completed prior to the January window because it was obvious our previous board wasn’t prepared to spend to make signings and this represented our best chance. The fact we didn’t And SD was okay with it was good enough for me but to try to suggest that people wanted 100m splashing on players and even using the Jan window as a stick to beat the new owners with is incredible. Anyone with half a brain knows they deserve a chance and will wait to judge them over a longer period of time. If we get to the start of the new season still scratching around for new signings, my concern will grow, and even more so after the next window, and the next and so on, just like the previous board. Hopefully the new board won’t take it to such extremes whereby both fans and management grew incredibly frustrated.

Re: Linked with..
If that is how we are looking at it, the first thing that Pace needs to be addressing is the recruitment team and cutting Dyche out of the recruitment process if he has signed off on this. To weaken the squad that is already lacking in quality when compared to our peers and not consider bringing the average age down is nothing short of concerning.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 4:15 pmWe've added two in terms of numbers to the four your refer to with Norris and Stephens added to the squad.

Sorry to rain on this parade but this transfer window will go like all the others
Linked with loads sign non of them
Need 5 or 6 player's but will bring in 1 or 2 max, these will be player's no other club's are interested in and will be last minute so no time to bed in and will be bench warmers all season and will not improve the starting 11
Despite millions coming in from player sales and bonus money from the teams coming up from the championship the players we do bring in will be free or very very cheap
Just being real, sorry to the ones that think it will be any different this time around

Was Harry Wilson a target that Dyche didn’t want or did we not stump up enough to do the deal? I can’t quite remember, if it’s the latter then I can see him being a target once again.

Dyche didn’t want him. He preferred players with Premier league experience.Hedontplayforyou wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 1:29 pmWas Harry Wilson a target that Dyche didn’t want or did we not stump up enough to do the deal? Harry Wilson played 31 times for Bournemouth in the Premier League. Strange that he'd want an experienced Premier League winger but he's not as concerned when it comes to recruiting defenders if the rumours are true. I'd much rather have a promising young winger and an experienced defender than the other way round.Winstonswhite wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 1:31 pmDyche didn’t want him.
