Final day drama in the Championship.
Final day drama in the Championship.
Derby 43pts GD -22
Rotherham 41pts GD -16
Sheffield Wednesday 40 -21
Wycombe 40 -33
Has it ever been so close at the bottom of the Championship going into the final day? They're all well short of Stan's 50 points survival target.
Derby play Sheffield Wednesday which makes it even more interesting.
If Rotherham fail to win away at Cardiff then Derby need a draw to stay up.
If Rotherham win then Derby would need a win to stay up, a draw and they and the Owls would both go down.
Wycombe are good as down because their goal difference is so poor that they'd need Rotherham to Lose and Wednesday to beat Derby by 12 goals fewer than their score against Boro.
This is what football is all about. Far more entertainment to be had than watching European Super clubs in a meaningless competition.

Great is the championship. I sometimes think I would get more enjoyment if Burnley were back in it with the way football is going at the minute.
I love the unpredictability of that league and 3 o clock Saturday kick offs every week.

It’s a cracking finish
Not sure about - If Rotherham win then Sheffield Wednesday would need a win to stay up - they’d still be a point behind?

Surely hope for a Rotherham win and a draw in Derby v Sheff Wed? Send both clubs down and rightful punishment for breaking FFP rules over the past few seasons.

I've watched all of Rotherham's 'games in hand' and after scoring three in the first of them v QPR haven't looked capable of scoring. Last night's game highlighted this perfectly. I hope they do stay up at the expense of Mel's, Frank Lampard's, Wayne Rooney's Derby and Sheffield Wed. but I can't see it myself though I bet supporters of Derby and Sheffield Wed. are more than concerned a little.

Wonder if Norwich and Watford have enjoyed their season more than us this year? Easy to give examples isnt it. I love us being in the top league but the novelty wears off IMO. Was just saying in some ways the championship can be more enjoyable but hey Huddersfield

So when saying the championship as a whole what you actually mean it would be more enjoyable providing we went back up to the level we are already at.claretcarrot93 wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 3:26 pmWonder if Norwich and Watford have enjoyed their season more than us this year? You wouldn't actually enjoy it if we finished bottom half or outside the play offs but could cope with finishing top 2. Hardly a glowing endorsement for you would prefer the championship

Well yes, getting promoted is great fun, but what guarantee is there that we would be promoted? And what where is the enjoyment of gaining promotion if you enjoy the Championship more?claretcarrot93 wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 3:26 pmWonder if Norwich and Watford have enjoyed their season more than us this year? We’ve had great times in the lower divisions, and the PL can certainly be a drag at times. But be careful what you wish for because if and when we eventually go down there is a fair chance we will disappear into mid table obscurity or worse. I’d rather be towards the bottom of the PL than the Championship, hence the reference to Huddersfield.

I was wondering yesterday, has it ever happened before that no team is mathematically relegated prior to the final round of fixtures?
I’m sure somebody here will be able to answer that!

Delusional set of fans Derby. The club has been overspending for years, it would be hilarious if they went down.

When we got relegated from old Division 1 in 1976 I thought that’s great we will win Division 2 like we did last time. Well we know what happened next. Quite the achievement by Wednesday if they manage to get down to League One again for a club that size. It's not like they've even lived the dream and are now paying the price. A shame really, I'd rather Derby drop.

The only time the championship or any league outside the Premier league gets exciting is when the season hits March and clubs are fighting promotion and relegation.
No fun in watching Rotherham on a cold Tuesday night down the Turf in front of 10,000 fans
I will be hoping Derby get relegated, so come on Wednesday and Rotherham

Chance for McCarthy and Cardiff to not bother against Rotherham? They'd surely prefer Rotherham to stay up for next season and see Derby and Sheff Wed down.

Wednesday must have thought they’d come up on the lottery when their 12point deduction was reduced to 6. They were playing well at the time. Now the 6 point reduction could see them down. Well no sympathy from me. Come on the Millers.

Very little sympathy for them... when they were in the rich league they wanted the drawbridge lifted... just like Oldham I’m delighted they are trawling in the filth of their own making.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 5:00 pmQuite the achievement by Wednesday if they manage to get down to League One again for a club that size. Re: Final day drama in the Championship.
Yes I suppose, just for the crack of seeing how Shrek fares managing at League 1 level, though I suspect if they were to take the fall he'd be one of the first out of the door.
It is staggering how quickly Derby have declined since Lampard's stint there, but now they are finally having to live within their means it shows how much the Candy Crush man was bankrolling their heavy spending.
The ultimate satisfaction would be to see Rotherham stage a great last day escape and banish both Derby and Wednesday to the lower leagues, but sadly I can't see it happening.

Re: Final day drama in the Championship.
I know a few Watford fans and, despite their excellent second half of the season and promotion, they did not enjoy the season at all. They seemed to spend it in a state of massive hyper-tension as in their view there would have been colossal financial problems for the club and they not bounced straight back. Need to be very careful what you wish for anyone who fancies the Championship. We should enjoy being in the Premier League and days like the wins at Liverpool, Everton and Wolves are fantastic.claretcarrot93 wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 3:26 pmWonder if Norwich and Watford have enjoyed their season more than us this year? You've got to feel for Rotheram - nine matches in twenty five days - it's too much to ask.

True but very frustrating watching them lose game after game to (probably) keep Derby up. Wonder if they could have prioritised a couple of games and held players back for them. Easy with hindsight of course.

Re: Final day drama in the Championship.
I live 25 miles up the road from Ipswich. The Tractor Boys spent 15 years or so treading water in the Championship punctuated by a couple of play off failures. Then they got relegated and are looking at their third season in the third tier and will finish circa 3/4 points above Stanley with their last home match against Fleetwood.
Understandably they are some of the most p1ssed off supporters you could ever hope to meet, and there are a lot fewer of them now than a couple of decades ago.
Bear in mind that the Ipswich ground is bigger and the fan base much higher too. It’s not guaranteed that this would happen to Burnley but it could do. One thing for certain is that while we remain in the EPL it cannot.

I've mentioned already that they perhaps could have 'prioritised' in games played and settled for what they had(a point) instead of chasing games and letting in crucial goals. As you suggest, though, we're all wiser after the event.Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 9:31 amTrue but very frustrating watching them lose game after game to (probably) keep Derby up. Never would I wish for relegation from the Premiership and a drift towards mediocrity .
I do share the wonderful feeling of being promoted to the top division, but the quality of premiership football is just awesome and rewarding and I can still have a crack with Bill and friends in the Coach and Horses!

It did happen to Burnley, it might not have been called the Premier then but 1976-1986 saw Burnley go from Division 1 to Division 4.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 10:15 amI live 25 miles up the road from Ipswich. Re: Final day drama in the Championship.
Doesn't seem that long ago that the company i worked for, with a Head Office in Ipswich, had a box at Portman Road. They couldn't fill it when they were in the Premier League, as operations and clients were spread across the country, with none at all in Suffolk. Every home game there was a company wide email went around asking people to apply for tickets as there were spares. I went a few times, v Arsenal and West Ham to name 2. When they were relegated to the Championship it was no problem to get them and twice i went along to Burnley games with a few others, including the former editor of a Clarets website . Unfortunately it was the 6-1 reverse, where we conceded 5 in about 20 first half minutes. When the first went in i said i think this could be the floodgates opening, not for one minute thinking that they would score more or less everytime they had an attack. We left at 5-1 and i think i did the 90 or so miles back to drop one of the guys off in Welwyn in about an hour and 20 minutes, much of the A12 and M25 covered at speeds in 3 figures.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 10:15 amI live 25 miles up the road from Ipswich. However wasn't he selected a few times when he was injured, in the hope he'd be fit for later rounds?
Managers should take the blame for that, but he wasn't the only player they did that for.
