Susan Boyle...with a better version than the Stones?

It's a cover but I don't think it has any place on a 'Covers better than the original' thread. So I feel the need to link the original.

can't decide if the original is better after just finding out the cover is actually a cover when I always thought it was the original. Anyway, both are brilliant.

Elvis's version of " Bridge over troubled water " was far superior than the original ..
Tina Turner's version of " Proud Mary " was better than the original by Creedence Clearwater Revival ...

Try AMERICA by simon and garfunkel, covered by YES.Quite good.
I’d go with that. Complete with Chris Squire on base playing a bit of America from West Side Story on the intro.
Only ever released on a best of album but played many times live.

Sorry bud but no one can or ever will better the original of Bridge. Tina’s version of Mary was good but not that good and nowhere near Creedences original…far too fast for a start and doesn’t capture the atmosphere.

Bridge - has to be S&G for me but then I think Paul Simon is brilliant.

As for Mary - I just think the two versions are so different it's too difficult to compare. Love the Creedence version, as for Tina's, seen her do it live and it's right up there.

I would probably agree Tony, the two versions of Mary could almost be different songs. I just prefer the original as I was a huge fan of Creedence, the first band I ever saw live (FT Hall circa 1970-ish).

I know you are a fan CT, perhaps you have not heard the Queen of Soul move BoTW so far into another dimension that it's difficult to compare to the original. This version heavily features her piano playing, bear in mind that she was self taught and couldn't read music.

Anything and everything by either Eric Bogle or Leonard Cohen; both great songwriters, but they couldn't sing worth a toss.

Melanie singing Ruby Tuesday, by the Rolling Stones. A huge ask, however, I think she delivers, with that unique voice and interpretation.

I'm guessing because I can only think of it topping the charts twice:

Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxzFUX5a3xg

Doctor and the Medics did this. I also see Gareth Gates did it. Actually Wiki says these were all three number ones but this is not the song you mean.

Anyway the original was great song so it's worth hearing anyway!

One cover that is superior to the original in my view. Melanie had one of the most emotional voices ever. Along with Kate Bush my two favourite female artists ever.
