One of the best covers ever, and generally thought of as being the original, but which it isn't:

Glen Campbell does an entire album of covers, it's called "meet glen campbell" and it is absolutely superb. Recorded after his alzheimers diagnosis, and it's well worth a listen. Treat yourself.

30 Seconds from Mars - Stronger (Kanye West Song)

Originally done for Radio 1's live lounge which has seen some brilliant, and horrible, covers over the years.
This was voted as the best one a few years ago now.

Skinny Love

The original by Bon Ivor - https://youtu.be/Dz5s5C6sAt0

The Birdy cover - https://youtu.be/aNzCDt2eidg

Birdy was only 14 when she recorded it I think and smashed it out of the park

George Michaels version of somebody to love with Queen is better than Freddie Mercury's in my humble opinion and has a big Freddie Mercury fan thats a tough one to say
Brilliant from George Michael on that version .the best version of somebody to love is from Montreal 1981 ...now that will never be beaten...but as you say an excellent performance from George Michael 👍

Willie Nelson - The Scientist (Coldplay)
I'm a big Coldplay fan but this cover is better than their original.

I also prefer this cover of Heroes by Motorhead, an opinion which may result in an angry mob but I don't care

Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold, better than Stings original.

https://youtu.be/9XaS93WMRQQ

Bad Wolves - Zombie.
Slightly different to the original Cranberries version because they were meant to be doing it with Dolores, but she died, so they recorded and released it anyway in her memory and the profits went to Dolores' family.
In some ways it is better than the Cranberries original.

Couple of shockers there mate... :o Thread was going really well there for a time.
So you've just selected two recordings by Elvis - both covers by him i know, but Elvis made them what they are (gotta admit i AM a fan, but not blinkered) that are considered brilliant, and you reckon the shockingly bad covers by FYC and PSB are better? In the league table of cover versions, they are famous for being relegated from the NW Counties deputy reserve fifth team league for being very very ****.

Someone's put you up to this haven't they? You're just messin... :?

Well done, you caught me. Hook line and sinker there mate... i've bit like a good 'un. ;)

edit: Eva Cassidy just rescued you there... ;)

One of those where it's actually pretty hard to tell what song it is.

Their version of Live And Let Die ain't exactly shabby either, and I loved the original also, but they somehow manage to take an iconic song and make it their own, which isn't easy to do.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D9vAItORgE

I think that's rather like saying that you can't improve a car or other equipment by modding it. It's usually not true.

I don't like to listen to songs on principles - for example some people won't listen to certain singers or bands because they're not 'cool'. I just hear what it sounds like and what emotions it gives me. An example is this:

Billy Roberts - Hey Joe (supposedly the original author)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PziiNzFWZog

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3JsuWz4xWc

Marmalade - Hey Joe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw1HX4bpWMU

All interesting. I like the the Hendrix and Marmalade versions. Marmalade are probably not considered 'cool'. Hendrix version is not exactly the same as the recorded version. Indeed singers, even of original works, change their songs so what is an original anyway? I heard the Hendrix version first and that has an impact on our choices. I've often found that going back to the original is a disappointment. Some writers are good writers but poor musicians.

New interpretations can bring different elements to a song. For example:

Don Gibson - Lonesome Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z4kPGcmyPI

Neil Young - Lonesome Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p_yH5ItSgU

If you listen to music only on principles you are missing out.
