#Burnley have offered a contract until 2022 (€3M) with option for another season to Ashely #Young. #Inter have offered the contract extension with the reduction of 30% of his salary. The english fullback will decide his future in the next days. #transfers
So Inter have offered €63,000 a week and us similar if the €3 mill is to be believed, what can I get for being 60 yrs old €1.4 mill, I'll take it

Reading posts on this thread making comparisons with previous players we've signed in their 30's. It's worth distinguishing that Young has spent half of his career at Man United and has just played a decent part in Inter Milan winning Serie A. He's not coming to us fresh from battling relegation with Stoke.
Could be a very clever signing. Particularly with no fee involved.

I was corrected on that. Because he’s with a club outside of England & Wales he’s able to sign a pre contract.Bigvince wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 6:22 amSo Ashley can’t sign for anyone before 1st July, oh dear! That means we’ll spend another 2 weeks talking about him, then he’ll sign for somebody else, for more money.
He’d be a good addition to the squad, as long as we don’t pay silly wages and go over 12 month deal

Very astute signing should we manage it. Not sure people can question his ability after assisiting Inter in winning a first league title since 2010.
Played a reasonable amount of games so fitness should not prove an issue.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
It would be a great signing if it is backed up with a younger player. What a lot of fans aren't realising is that the severe lack of investment in recent windows has meant that this squad can not be repaired in 1 transfer window, so signings like this are very clever 'stop gaps' to see us through to the next window with next to no risk involved, and adds quality and depth. Put it this way, I would rather have an Ashley Young on the bench than an Anthony Glennon for example (which is no disrespect to him I am sure he is a great young player, but he may not be ready yet for PL football)ArmchairDetective wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 9:13 amReading posts on this thread making comparisons with previous players we've signed in their 30's. The four transfer windows in which we've only really signed Brownhill as long term are not going to be repaired in one summer transfer window sadly.
The alarm bells will be ringing though if we fail to invest long term as well as short term (but excellent) signings like this

A one year deal, maybe, but the 2nd being an option in his favour has to be risky.
Also would that make him our highest paid player?

The option would always be in our favour other than him likely to have to play a set number of games to activate it. Why would he be our highest paid player? Why would it be too expensive?boatshed bill wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 9:57 amToo expensive.

€3m is slightly under £50k a week and as Tony suggests would certainly not make him our highest paid player.

- So, what are we currently looking at? Young, Collins...any more strong rumours?
We need more than that.
Also, what about departures? Are we expecting any? Tarks? Pope? Dwight? Naughty Ashley?
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
There are no such things as "free" transfers nowadays
Add to any wage deal a signing on fee, which could be substantial (and I mean in the £m's)
One of the reasons both Hendrick and Brady chose to run down their contracts in the hope of getting themselves a final golden deal elsewhere - just not yet taken up by anyone for Brady

Don't think Brady did run his contract down - I think it was more the case that he didn't get an offer from us. And I think signing on fees are in the past really, it's all incorporated in the wages. But you are right, there's no such thing as a free transfer.jojomk1 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 10:51 amThere are no such things as "free" transfers nowadays

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
So would Young be signed as a left back, a position where we have an excellent first choice and (as proved on numerous occasions) a more than adequate backup.
Or would the thinking be left wing to keep Dwight on his toes?

Pretty certain he is being signed as a RM
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Or right wing where he's played most of his career
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I think RM would be the most likely position for him to play, but the benefit of Young is his flexibility and ability to play in a number of positions ... RB, LB, RM, LM

In his last 50 games, Young has played right midfield twice.
He’s very versatile though but we do need a ‘natural’ right winger as attempts at playing there by Brownhill, Brady, Gudmundsson and Hendrick have shown

I can't imagine we're looking to sign Young to play primarily anywhere other than wide right, although his versatility would be a bonus.
It may even be a consideration for Young who may quite fancy a more attacking role.

Young has a great right foot and was naturally a right winger. His versatility is an added bonus. He looked good for Inter last season. I really hope this happens.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I’ll be gutted if Young is our RW solution, although given our tendency to play more defensively-minded/able players in that role in recent years it wouldn’t surprise me. I think we need some youth, flair and pace in that role next season - someone who can beat his man.
Dyche seemed to be testing 4-5-1 in the bigger games last season though, and think Young could do well wide right in that formation - helping to double up etc.
I’m not a fan of Dwight in the middle so certainly hope it’s not for LW!
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
He hasn't played right midfield for years though really. United moved him back to left back and that seems to be where he mainly played for Inter.
I seem to remember his biggest strength was playing on the left and coming inside onto his right foot?

If the Young signing occurs we will have three Ashleys in our squad. Is this a world record?
What other Ashleys could we add to the team?
By the way, I hope he has lost his instinct for 'simulation'.

Only 24, so will improve and £8 million would be a bargain.
We would need to move out one of Barnes or Jay

At £8 million I'd snap Rovers' hands off. More of a stand out player than Brewster at our 2017 World Cup win for his all round game for me. Surprised Newcastle let him go.

Must be quite a thing for the new owners to make their first signing for the club; this is where retaining Mr Garlick's expertise in such matters will be invaluable..

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
It has always been a source of concern to me that additional monies were not borrowed to settle the outstanding share debts of MG and JB, thus giving the new owners full ownership via further secured debt. I do wonder if there is a problem here regarding debt levels etc and the ability to repay same in some potential lenders eyes, and this may give an indication as to our weak performance in the current transfer window. Unable to secure further debt the club would have to sell first, demanding full settlement before the club could acquire any targets. Current PL clubs interested in our players would sense this and so prolong negotiations to finally, after some time, agreeing to a deal further weakening our squad strength, with our planned targets in the meantime also having moved on elsewhere. We could start the new season in a much weakened position and find ourselves fighting a relegation battle from day 1 instead of hoping to put early points on the board. This could also be impacting on SD's thinking given his current situation regarding future managerial roles and contracts both here and elsewhere.
