Yes from me. He brings so much more than ‘a winger’. He will be a fantastic role-model. Playing so long at the very highest levels of the game, a player SD knows personally and trusts.

If he were to become a Barton type signing, then yes. However, if he becomes another Lennon, Walters, Crouch, Stevens type signing then no.

From what I have been told that’s pretty spot on.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 4:06 pmFabrizio romano has just said

They weren’t cheap pens and I thought it was a nice touch that new signings were presented with one.Stevie2112 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 7:05 pmMontblanc pens aren't cheap.Anywhere from about £200 to £1000

It's not like we sign thousands of players! Good gesture gone down for relative pennies in the scheme of things.

I might be wrong didn’t Young play the majority of his career on the right wing? To then be moved to LM/LB in the latter stages of his career.

Yes from me, so long as this is not our only signing.
It would also increase the number of Burnley players with links to Stevenage following Boydie, Shackle and Nathan Peel (yes him!) I can't currently think of any more but maybe CT can advise any more?!!

No he can use either foot but he’s no right winget
Re: Ashley Young yes or no
He isn't fit to lace Defour's boots as a footballer. Yes he's hard working and will put a shift in, but let's not go overboard. If he plays right midfield hopefully he'll free up more space for McNeil.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 8:02 pmYes.
He could potentially provide the same spark as Defour, he's got experience/knowledge to pass on to the younger lads.

Ah yes but there are other links, Boydie started his professional football life at Stevenage, Shackle and A Young born and raised in Stevenage, I feel sure Nathan Peel played in the Green and Black halved kit for Burnley? Could be wrong of course.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 8:36 pmThe only two players who have played league football for us and Stevenage are Dean Bowditch & Josh McQuoid.

Ashley Young was a right winger for years, he’s played left back recently but he made his name and got into the England squad as a winger.

Hard working, will put a shift in, titles in 2 countries and more importantly fully fit.
Defour is one of my favourite players ever from anywhere, but to say Young isnt fit to lace his boots is very harsh.

I tend to agree, but I'm actually happy with us tasking him for one year, but two at his age seems a stretch to me and I'm more concerned we'll be shelling out good money to someone who rarely features or is mostly unfit in his second season. Having said that i know it's the second season which is likely to be the deal clincher, so I guess we have no choice. I also agree with others that it has to be just one of a flurry of signings for me to be properly pleased and by no means the "marquee" one.
Re: Ashley Young yes or no
Maybe a bit harsh, but when Defour was with us he was clearly head and shoulders above everyone else in the squad. Don't think that will be the case at all with Young, but fair play to him for the career he's made for himself. He's achieved far more than plenty of more naturally gifted players have.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 8:55 pmHard working, will put a shift in, titles in 2 countries and more importantly fully fit.

I knew Boyd started there when they were in non-league and I spotted over the last few days that Young is from Stevenage. I didn’t know about Shackell. I’d no idea on Peel but apparently went there on loan.aclaretinstevenage wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 8:47 pmAh yes but there are other links, Boydie started his professional football life at Stevenage, Shackle and A Young born and raised in Stevenage, I feel sure Nathan Peel played in the Green and Black halved kit for Burnley? I imagine the second season will be an option we can take up, or he can trigger in certain circumstances (like playing [x] games this season).Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 9:00 pmI tend to agree, but I'm actually happy with us tasking him for one year, but two at his age seems a stretch to me and I'm more concerned we'll be shelling out good money to someone who rarely features or is mostly unfit in his second season. Still wouldn’t shock me to see him extend at Inter though.
As you say, cannot be the “marquee” signing. Need a top RW in my opinion.

We’ve only got to finish 2 places higher to pay Young’s wages (current allegedly 90k) for a year. His quality will turn defeats into draws and draws into wins on a few occasions I’m sure.

Yes Defour was head and shoulders above everyone else, however potentially a fully fit Young who plays the whole season could offer us more than a half fit Defour.jrgbfc wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 9:03 pmMaybe a bit harsh, but when Defour was with us he was clearly head and shoulders above everyone else in the squad. Defour featured for 24 times for a total of 2009 mins out of 3420 mins from 38 league games in the 2017-18 season.
1 goal and 1 assist.
I'd like to think a fit and firing Ashley young will give us more game time, more assists and maybe more goals.
Also balances the team out because with just one fully fit proper winger last season we looked disjointed, everyone knew that.

Oh I agree. Just highlighting that it’s a good idea providing he stays fit and supplies the goods

If we can get Young and Dyche both signed soon, it will be a huge catylyste in the attraction of further players to our club. Cant believe that with our threadbare squad that people are actually stating they don't want him to join. A quality versatile player who has a great injury-free record

From what I hear we have a good chance of getting him but it being a free it can’t go through until July and anything could happen before then.

If it is, then that makes far more sense, but having said that we could trigger it and find the second season is a bridge too far. However, I'm happy to take that risk right now as it definitely starts to strengthen us for next season. (With emphasis on the word "starts!")

With the news that Dyche has “agreed terms” though, I can’t see the hold up for signing and getting the news out there. Assuming we’re in the market for a number of players, you’d think that both Dyche and the club would be looking to announce ASAP to start building that positive sentiment.

Not better and better, his ability or my thoughts on it have been consistent since I first saw him play for us best player I have seen play for us by some distance sadly we didn’t see enough of him but that wasn’t down to ability as we all know. Ashley Young isn’t in the same class as a Footballer in my opinion but is physically better, a very capable footballer and I would expect he will play in a number of positions for us if he signs and probably a majority of games so would probably end up being a better signing overall.

I wouldn’t necessarily say people outrightly don’t want him, if it’s him or nothing of course people want him to join, I think if it’s down to him & somebody less mature the more youthful player would be preferred. It’s whether part of the budget allocated will be detriment to another incoming which could perhaps be where the reluctance comes from.warksclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 9:35 pmIf we can get Young and Dyche both signed soon, it will be a huge catylyste in the attraction of further players to our club. As an American myself, maybe the American mentality is what they’re going for. The bigger and the flashier, the better. Announcing Dyche plus 2 (at least) players who have signed all at once. Some Americans love the biggest fireworks display they can muster or the largest light show around Christmas... and, this is their first window to wow us Burnley fans. It’ll be remember when Dyche and 2 players signed together kind of day/announcement. ALK etc. Will receive high praise and....Dyche will have been backed.NewClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 10:26 pmCould not agree more.

I understand with the situation we are in, 2 is somewhat the minimum and there is a lot of window left but this has been my hunch since I heard “Dyche agreed terms.” What do you all think?

To be honest, that is not the impression they have given me so far. Yes I’d expect a bit of a fanfare when things start happening… but we’ve always had versions of that. I think they’ll go for SD’s top picks and are starting sniffing around some low hanging fruit.WiscoClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 11:31 pmAs an American myself, maybe the American mentality is what they’re going for. I thought Defour was fantastic but all said and done Young outstrips him for career honours. Defour has only won titles in minor leagues whereas Young as won the Premier League and Serie A (plus the FA Cup and Europa League).
Would seem a very low risk signing to me. Yes, he is getting on and may be slowing or injured, but then again, he may not.

So Ashley can’t sign for anyone before 1st July, oh dear! That means we’ll spend another 2 weeks talking about him, then he’ll sign for somebody else, for more money.
He’d be a good addition to the squad, as long as we don’t pay silly wages and go over 12 month deal
