100%, that's why I think Pace has acted so quickly on certain things. It's night and day from where it was even 5 years ago but we are indeed well behind other clubs in top leaguesGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:01 pmYeah it is getting better but it needs to move along faster.
We are already well behind.

If we want to criticise the board for not signing Tarkowski, we must be doing it on the basis that things would have been better if we had. I don't see it myself. Since we failed to sign Tarkowski, we have twice won promotion, we have finished in the top ten of the PL twice, we have played in Europe, and we are still in the PL. And we still have Tarkowski.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 9:53 pmexcept Dyche thought there was and his opinion is the only one that counts
So if we had signed him then, where would we be now? Would we be significantly better off? If not, then it can hardly be said to be a mistake.

It takes a certain mindset to be good at it and knowledge of what your product is that you're trying to sell.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:02 pm100%, that's why I think Pace has acted so quickly on certain things. At the Jeep/Land Rover place they eventually employed someone to run the social media accounts on a full time basis, but they weren't really interested or knowledgeable about the product range, not even 6 months into the job
In contrast my Aunt is the worldwide marketing director for Honeywell because she's passionate about the job and knows her brand /products.

Knowledge is the key to everything, without it you get found out for sure. Honeywell are huge, good for your Aunt !!!GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:09 pmIt takes a certain mindset to be good at it and knowledge of what your product is that you're trying to sell.

We would have paid 300k instead of 5M, he wouldn't have a 27.5% sell on clause either, but yeah, no better off.dsr wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:09 pmIf we want to criticise the board for not signing Tarkowski, we must be doing it on the basis that things would have been better if we had. Was there a negative effect to not signing Tarks that January window?claretandy wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 5:56 amWe would have paid 300k instead of 5M, he wouldn't have a 27.5% sell on clause either, but yeah, no better off.
No, chances are he wouldn't play when you see that Duff and Shackell played virtually every game.
If we'd had Tarks, then there'd be no signing of Micheal Keane for £3 million and no sale of Keane for £30 million.

I would have thought the mistake Dyche is pointing out is clear.
Especially on a thread about finance.

Do you know for a fact that if we had signed him then, we would still have signed Barnes, we would still have got promoted, and given a different career path that Tarkowski wouldn't have left by now?claretandy wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 5:56 amWe would have paid 300k instead of 5M, he wouldn't have a 27.5% sell on clause either, but yeah, no better off.

People seem to forget that we do sign players with potential, such as Dan Agyei from Wimbledon. They don't always work out, but it shows we do spend a few hundred grand here and there on players in the hope they might come good.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 7:56 amWas there a negative effect to not signing Tarks that January window?

He didn't get much game time in the 18 months after he signed anyway.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 7:56 amWas there a negative effect to not signing Tarks that January window?

For every situation like missing out on Tarky the first time, I’m sure there are just as many that we did miss out on where you now think ‘dodged a bullet there’.claretandy wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 5:56 amWe would have paid 300k instead of 5M, he wouldn't have a 27.5% sell on clause either, but yeah, no better off.
Lansbury or Clucas or Mawson were all thought to be targets at one time or another for instance. What have they gone on to do?
It’s the nature of transfers. Knowing what they know now I’m sure Brentford would’ve wanted Toney straight from Newcastle for 500k instead of paying Peterborough £5m + add ons (which I’d be amazed if this didn’t include a hefty sell on %). Yes we’ve been penny pinchers over the last few years but we tend to get more right than wrong.

Wonder if Saints ever regret releasing Ings as a schoolboy and then paying millions to sign him from Liverpool...
That's how this game works isn't it for some?

Some interesting comments there.
We heard it all before in January and nothing happened. Let’s see if we actually do something this window

Re: Give me the money !!!
Basically confirming what we all know - there isn't an endless pot of money but we can afford signings.
What was most pleasing is that they spent a full day planning "yesterday" (presumably Tuesday). Let's hope that the planning session was a) very constructive/included all the necessary voices and resulted in a clear plan for the summer that AP and his team can now start to put in to action (early). Just having those things would seem to be a step forward from previous windows.
