The Lofthouse Pit is now a nature reserve, I live a couple of miles away and I regularly walk, run and cycle round it.

Hapton mining disaster, was sat on the grass on the fennyfold by St John's school when told about it. Also remember being terrified every time a plane flew over Whitegate park during the Cuban missile crisis expecting to be nuked.

I went to a Roman Catholic junior school and the death of Pope Pius XII in 1958 is something I can remember. Earlier that year was the Munich Air crash but all I can recall from that is seeing my first FA Cup Final.just after between Man Utd. and Bolton and even relatives of mine who had little interest in football wanting Man Utd. to win.

First one I can really recall was the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster in 1986

I was 8, and we'd done a load of stuff at school about it in the run up.

Can remember getting home from school and watching it all happen on tv

Born 1965; the first major event that comes to mind was a moon landing on TV. Probably not Apollo 11 which was 1969, but one of the later ones that between 1970-72.

JFK being assassinated for me. I also remember going home from infant school and my mum was singing "Can't Buy Me Love" and I'd never heard it. I asked what she was singing and she said it was the new record from The Beatles just out that day!

JFK was assassinated the day before my 9th Birthday so would be this.

After that and something that had enormous impact was the Aberfan tip disaster in 1966, 116 primary schoolchildren and 28 adults lost there lives when a slag spoil mound engulfed their school. Absolutely horrific.

'President John F Kennedy has been Assassinated in Dallas Texas'

My Dad was still serving in the Army having joined in WW2, I told him when he got in from work and his words were 'Oh my God, this could lead to another War'

The Matthews cup final followed by ascent of Everest and then the coronation all within a few weeks of each other. My wife remembers being woken by the VE Day celebrations so she beats me.

1960, 12th August: My dad and four others dying in an RAF plane crash - made the national papers and was pretty fundamental for me and of course is still with me today.

1962, 5th May Burnley losing in the Cup Final - perhaps not a major news event nationally but it was for me and that also is still with me today.

1963, 22nd November: JFK. According to Wiki this occurred at 1230pm 'Central Standard Time' on a Friday in Dallas. I remember hearing about this at the cubs in the evening about 1900. Central Standard Time seems to be about five hours behind GMT so that would be about right. Anyway, it means almost nothing to me now.

November 1963. It's one of the first I recall very clearly. FA Cup final the previous year, May 1962 is earlier. Then there's something about a Cuban missile crisis, October 1962 (though if someone said 1961 I'd have accepted that date).

Earliest memories as a 4 year old going on 5. Of Elvis Presley's death in 1977. I'd never seen my Mum cry before and she was crying over the headline on front of the paper.
I guess the Yorkshire Ripper around the same time but more for the fact he had killed again. .

The first one I grasped the concept of how serious and 'real' a news story was would have been the Iranian Siege in 1980 which I watched unfold live on TV.

Just off topic a minute as you mention pensions,I thought I'd work out how much my wife and I have been robbed of...£65,3764.40 and with inflation it will be much more by the time my wife reaches 66....a disgrace and a scandal that the Tory/Lib dem coalition should be ashamed of.
Sorry for going off topic but that one really pisses me off.

That just brought back a memory of the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 77. We had a street party and my Mum dressed me as a Queens Guard. I was 4 too (In 77 not 37). She has a photo of a very unhappy me dressed in a red tunic, black pants and a hat that was almost as big as me. :)
