Eurovision 2021
Eurovision 2021
Nil points anyone? Another poor song from the Uk. Is it time to get Simon Cowell involved in our song and artist selection?

you could bring Michael Jackson back from the dead, have him represent the UK, sing the best song ever written and the UK would still get **** all.

I’m amazed it still gets the billing that it does on prime time television. It’s an awful programme to watch, littered with some truly terrible, cringe inducing music, lyrics, contestants and presenters.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat May 22, 2021 7:01 amyou could bring Michael Jackson back from the dead, have him represent the UK, sing the best song ever written and the UK would still get **** all.

I've always thought of Eurovision as 'It's a knockout' with music. A bit of fun, cringeworthy moments aplenty and lots of silly costumes but apparently there are people who take it seriously.

Re: Eurovision 2021
In the 60s when this music farce started, England was the world leader in popular music and yet by a fanfare of broadcast media pressure, the nation was whipped up to a wannabe state of 'desperate to win' against the likes of Poland or whoever.
What the contest made quite clear is what a bunch of stiffs the rest of Europe was, culminating in the greatest moment of Irish history and the triumph of Dana and the tragedy that followed for the UK as a direct result of the idiot mojo it created.
England then surrendered its sense of humour to Vicky Leandros and the nation has never recovered.

Re: Eurovision 2021
I've not been following this contest very closely, but I did notice Ireland failed to qualify again the other night, when did they get so bad at this gig, they used to dominate in the olden days.
You do get the odd decent tune emerging from all the dross, but this competition is well past it's sell by date now, and it's shows how farcical it's become when Australia were invited to enter, BTW they didn't qualify this time either, but how on earth can it claim to be a ESC when a country thousands of miles away can take part, that's like NZ playing in the European Championship ludicrous.
Yes the one interesting aspect will be how many if any points Israel obtain given the recent events in the middle east.

Live from Worthy Farm (Glastonbury) is on at the same time and looks like it's gonna be special. I know what we'll be watching. Might not be too late to get free 'tickets' for anyone that's got O2 priority too.

Surprise, surprise the UK is propping up the table again with nil points, why do we even bother competing in this farce anymore?.
France in the lead for anyone interested.
And no before you ask I haven't been watching it just checking the updates on the beeb now and again.

A lot of people taking a bit of fun far too seriously. Still, if we’re going to withdraw from competitions we haven’t won for an age then we can forget the World Cup and the Euros.

Re: Eurovision 2021
The UK put a lot of money into this “competition” for relatively little gain. It’s a poor bit of TV to be honest.
Re: Eurovision 2021
I've just listened to the song, and I think its score of NIL was nothing to do with the supposed dislike of the UK. That song earned NIL on merit. It's not easy to judge the tune because the singer (on the official video) wasn't technically good enough to perform it clearly, but the words are cliche after cliche that say nothing. (I'm pretty sure "nothing's gonna stop us now" has been used before. )
I don't know what his live performance was like, but it needed to be a lot better than his official video. But I bet it wasn't.

Nice video doing the rounds of the Italian singer evidently snorting a line of cocaine off his table.

Loved every minute of it. Great TV coverage and some great stage sets. The Italians really rocked and the German lead singer was a nutter among many. Would have been gutted if we picked up a point after going the whole programme with Nil point

The political voting drives me mad so I don't watch it. All the countries ending with an A seem to give high marks to each other. We weren't liked before Brexit, so no matter how good our song was, we would end up with nil points.
It used to get me how Ireland always gave us the same number of points every year, as if they were obliged to, no matter how good or bad our song was.

Re: Eurovision 2021
The UK's result history coincides quite well real world history.
Re: Eurovision 2021
I didn't agree with Graham Norton that it was a stronger slate of songs than usual. Maybe the songs that I had ranked in the middle were stronger than the usual middle-rankers, but I thought there were no stand out songs.
Ours did nothing. Us, Spain and Germany would not have got through the group stage if there was not a real madrid clause that gave us all a bye.
There were too many pale imitations of songs that had previously done well hoping to copy the success, but that tactic hasn't worked for a good few years. The Malta lot had clearly copied that "toy" song which was fairly awful but had a novel message. It won on the message first time out 2 or 3 years ago.
The winner, I thought was a less than average hm offering, yet still managed to get through as there wasn't a stand out song or two to harvest the votes.
Of course, it doesn't help us that brexit and covid has meant that we don't have so many ex-pats about. The votes being "political" is not the issue that people make out. There are a lot of Greeks in Cyprus and they get to vote there. There are a lot of Italians all over the place.
If you had all moved toIreland and voted, how many of you would have voted for the uk even though it was meh?
I had Belgium-Greece - Sweden-Switzerland as my 4 champions league spots but I find that I often like the Belgian entries.
