Turns out we needn't have worried ...

Post by Clarets4me » Sun May 23, 2021 5:41 pm

As things stand and given our goal difference, 28 points would have kept us up ...
Who'd have thought it ? :D

Goal difference wouldn't have been the same had we stayed on 28pts though

So that dire performance vs West Brom got us the vital point taking us to 28 all the way back in February.

They'll be spitting feathers when they find out they exerted themselves needlessly for an extra couple of games.

The bottom 3 are all going to fail to reach 30 points, however that's unlikely to be repeated next season, so we need to strengthen in key areas if we're not to be involved in a real relegation scrap next time. We can't keep relying on 3 teams being as dross as Fulham, West Brom & Sheff Utd have been this term, because that's a recipe for disaster.

It’s ok we’ll have a whole new set of 30+ aged work horses with no pace and no creativity to look forward to.

Losing all of the last 3 games and nilled in all of them makes for a dismal end to a disappointing season.

Thank heavens I don't have BT Sport.

Ironically we've performed worse against the relegated sides than we have done in previous seasons. It's the fact that we've taken points against much better sides that's saved us from being relegated.

Yes it's been a weird season for most teams, but we can't expect to win at the likes of Arsenal, Everton & Liverpool next season to stay up, if we do of course that's a bonus, but I fully expect our games against the sides around us to be the crunch affairs, so hopefully we can regain our typical form in those matches we need the points in.

We had a team who performed against the odds, with no one on the bench on several occasions.

No I wasn't actually but have enjoyed seeing us in the top flight recently and will again for another season to come. If that's being a happy clappy then fair enough I plead guilty.

It does however surprise me that so many dislike our performances to such an extent but will still be watching and complaining next season no doubt. There are choices.

You know we don’t have a choice but to watch. We are life long fans.

It’s been a painful season. Saying such is not a bad thing. Hopefully it incentivises the club to improve the quality of the squad.

I'm shocked the police haven't gotten involved in the cases of people clearly being forced to hand over hundreds, or thousands, of £££ to watch something they don't like....
Clearly this wasn't an issue when the club was floating around in the lower leagues for years.

Swings & roundabouts, we did what we had to do & that’s it, had we not taken points off the better sides we would have surely taken points off the worse sides instead, by the final reckoning & over the course we had enough guile, luck, effort, determination, ability to see the job out, that’s all there is to it.

I'm usually pretty good at working out what might be needed and I said some time ago that 34 would be more than enough. That's why I thought we'd just about done it when we won at Everton and got to 33.

But I certainly wasn't expecting 18th to finish with only 28 points.

I understand where you are coming from but some of the pain has been offset for me with terrific performances at Palace, Wolves, Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool and some scrappy performances but getting results. At the end of the day we have what is probably a tired squad who have achieved the foremost objective of staying in this league with a few games to spare. For that we should be grateful at least.

Some major issues need to be addressed in the closed season in terms of incoming players but I think it's harsh to be so negative on the current group of players looking at what they have given throughout a shortened and congested season.

Everton was some sort of a watershed the significance of the result away against quality opposition, the only 1 of the 3 which were of any concern were Fulham I think for a period they produced some good performances matched with some good results & closed the gap, fortunately for us & unfortunately for them it couldn’t be maintained & the form just dropped off a cliff, for a brief spell prior it looked like Fulham would drop somebody else into the mire.

Can we have a catchy name for the opposite of a happy clapper? Just for a bit of balance like, there seems to be a lot of them about all of a sudden.

How about Moaning flapper?
