Your England 23

Post by Newcastleclaret93 » Mon May 24, 2021 10:34 pm

Ahead of Southgates selection tomorrow (even though it won’t be finalised until 1st June) what would be your squad of 23?

Mine would be the below

Pickford, Pope, Johnstone

Trippier, Trent, Godfrey, Stones, Maguire, Tomori, Shaw, Chillwell

Foden, Rice, Henderson, Bellingham, Mount, Phillips, Grealish

Sancho, Kane, Rashford, Sterling, Greenwood

Well you can take Pope's name off the list as he's injured, and there's also major question marks about Maguire's fitness for the Euro's. plus you can add Kyle Walker to the defence, I wouldn't take him myself, but no doubt GS will, ditto with Dier, but the rest you're probably not too far out with however.

Is Norris English? If he is then I bet that idiot Southgate doesn't pick even though he's only conceded 4 goals all season.

A lot of variables and unknowns, but Southgate worries me.

His over reliance on calamity waiting to happen Pickford
Playing two defensive midfielders when we have a glut of dynamic midfielders is over cautious
His weird obsession with picking loads of right backs.

If he picks 2 right backs plus Walker I'll just about let him off.

The squad is definitely 26 so here are my 26

Pickford, Pope, Henderson (assuming Pope makes it)

RB - Trippier, Trent - These two are way ahead of the others in my book.
LB - Shaw, Chilwell - Nailed on
CB - Walker, Stones, Maguire, Tomori (Think he'll take Walker due to his flexibility) + Mings and Coady (I don't really rate either, but I think that's who he'll pick. Maybe remove a CB and bring Saka instead.

DM / CM - Henderson, Rice, Phillips (depending on Henderson's fitness) and Bellingham

AM/wide players - Foden, Grealish, Mount (these three all need to go) plus Sancho

Forwards: Kane, Rashford, Sterling, Greenwood, Calvert-Lewin - (Personally think Ings deserves a place but not sure GS rates him)

We are weak at CB and possibly GK, so I really hope GS goes for it as I think it's our best chance of progressing.

My choice and in order of choice but lacking centre halves and holding midfielders so he'll probably bring in Mings and Rice unfortunately. You could argue Walker, Henderson and Barkley positions but looking at experience and players such as Calvert-Lewin and Ward Prowse who give something different if we need to go direct or for set pieces.

 Well he was my 26th choice for a reason. I said there's an argument over him and others but are Rice or Dier any better? Albeit they offer different roles.

For me Rice has been the best DM in the league this season.

No one has been remotely close. I can really see why the top teams are after him.

Some of his surging runs from deep remind me of Yaya Toure. If he works on his offensive side he could easily double his goal tally.

Man Utd's Mason Greenwood withdraws & Jesse Lingard to miss out:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57314442

Along with Rashford & Sterling woefully out of form it seems England's attacking talent won't be quite as strong as it could be.

I suspect the front three will be one of the below formations.

Grealish, Kane, Foden

Foden, Kane, Sancho

Still pretty awesome

Shame about Greenwood missing out he'd have been a useful option even from the bench if England were chasing a goal.

And if Gareth was picking purely on form you could certainly make a case for Lingard getting the nod ahead of both Rashford and Sterling.

Puts yet more onus on Harry Kane to get the goals to fire England to glory.

Here's the squad, Tripps makes the cut as one of FOUR right backs, why on earth do we need 4 right backs, Southgate's lost the plot again.

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Man Utd), Sam Johnstone (West Brom), Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Defenders: John Stones (Man City), Luke Shaw (Man Utd), Harry Maguire (Man Utd), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (Man City), Tyrone Mings (Aston Villa), Reece James (Chelsea), Conor Coady (Wolves), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)

Midfielders: Mason Mount (Chelsea), Declan Rice (West Ham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Kalvin Phillips (Leeds)

Forwards: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Raheem Sterling (Man City), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton), Phil Foden (Man City), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)

It certainly does, and even if Jordan Henderson is fit, he can't possibly be match fit or even anywhere close to match fit, however he's one of the chosen ones, so Gareth was never going to leave him out come what may, and that equally applies to TAA and Harry Maguire.

I have a lot of sympathy for JWP, he's had an excellent season leading the Saints, and he's an asset at dead balls which could be vital in a tight game in the latter stages, should England get that far, which I very much doubt we will.

Trippier can play left back, hence why we've got x2 left backs and x4 right backs.

If Henderson isn’t fit, Rice and Phillips are two mid table Premier League midfielders. Good, but we’ll be up against the best (Kante etc). No chance.

Similarly, if Maguire isn’t fit, we are getting into the out of position players (disaster imminent) OR the likes of Coady, another mid table player? Again, no chance.

The forwards are good but not if they don't get the ball.

So it all hinges on those two being fit, I’d currently place us as rank outsiders.

Is Southgate on the wind up, this from his press conference, surely it's got to be a joke hasn't it.

One of the big talking points before the announcement was how many right-backs would Gareth Southgate would pick for his England squad.

Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James and Kyle Walker were all in contention for the defensive spot.

In the end, as it turned out, he wanted all four.

Southgate said: "Basically, they are in our best 26 footballers, that's why they are in the squad. If I could've picked a fifth or a sixth right-back... I probably would have done!"

When will an England manager realise it's not about picking the best players, it's about building a squad who can win something, we constantly keep making the same mistakes every time a major tournament rolls around, and yet again it'll end in tears. :?

On a more positive note it's great to see Trippier sat alongside Gareth, and it's fair to say he's come a long way since we first signed him back in 2011.

Kieran Trippier is sitting alongside manager Gareth Southgate.

The Atletico Madrid defender says it's a "very special moment" to be included in the squad.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be in the 26 and looking forward to get to the tournament now and helping out," he said.

"I know the competition I have got in the right back position. It's just about playing well for my club, and I feel like I have done that this season."

Since leaving Burnley Trippier has played in a WC semi-final, a CL final, won a La Liga title, and now he's poised to line up for his country at the onset of a major tournament with many of England's games due to take place at Wembley.

There's not many of our ex-players who go on to bigger things, but he certainly has bucked that trend, and it's all to his credit and hard graft that he's now reaping the rewards, a lesson to all young players that if you put in the effort you can achieve your goals.

Unbelievable that he’s dropped Lingard after how he’s turned his form around..... unplayable for the second half of the season and for the first time in a long time he’s deserved a spot. Been selected in the past when he has far from deserved it. Just goes to show the fraud Southgate for what he is.

We have 1 more midfielder (5) and one of those has been crocked most of this year, than rightbacks (4)

How the **** is that a balanced squad

It’s clear the plan is to play 3 across the back with Walker right side central defender and one of the other 3 as right wing back. It’s been mentioned that Tripps can play left if needed too. But to leave out Lingard in the form he’s had this year, well, that’s criminal in my eyes

Picking the biggest names instead of the best team. We never ever learn.

Our current England side should be feared and respected in this tournament, and be one of the favourites to win it.... we’ll go out without troubling the quarter final.

Got to love all the salty Burnley fans kicking off with his squad selection. Just because he hasn’t selected any Burnley players doesn’t mean it’s a bad squad.

That squad is literally the best that’s available.

It is incredibly balanced at least two players for every position and some incredible young talent.

Pope's recovering from an operation...other than that, none of our players should be anywhere near the squad based on what we have seen this year...

Hope that's not too salty for ya... ;)

Haha well what are you complaining about. Seriously who else could make that team that hasn’t been picked?

Errrmmmm Lingard and JWP for starters. But instead Southgate prefers to pick injured players infront of inform players

Yes your right a lad that plays for a team that finished 15th, he had a decent season that’s it. So I am assuming you would leave out one of mount, Foden, Grealish, Saka since they play in the advanced midfield role?

Lingard who played half a season at West Ham after being dropped from United. Ok again assuming you would drop one of the above names since Lingard plays in the advanced midfield role?

Certainly many questions about that squad, not sure it is our best.

My query is that there are often comments about him being a "yes man"

Really, what does that mean? Do the FA tell him to pick a weaker team because they don't want to win? Really? Really?

To be honest, i'd just rather see players who are used to be playing in a certain position all season taken to the tournament to play in that position. And if the number one choice in that position isn't going, then take the number two, and so on. Rather than just shoeing in another player from another position because he's a name or he plays for a big club.

Reminiscent of Sven sticking Scholes (Paul Scholes...arguably the best English centre midfielder in God knows how long) out on the left wing when we simply HAD to play Lampard and Gerrard in the middle.
