The 2021 Copa América v Euros

Post by Spijed » Sat May 29, 2021 6:56 pm

Just in case anyone isn't aware, the Copa America tournament runs from the 10 June -13th July, basically on at the same time as the Euro's and the BBC will be covering the matches.

So no-one can have any complaints about not enough footy on telly this summer! :)

There is a growing belief that the Copa America will not happen. it was to be hosted in Argentina and Columbia - Columbia have backed out due to a surge in Covid and Argentina is also now experiencing a surge as well - this despite Messi negotiating with the Chinese to get all the players and support staff vaccines ahead of the general populations

Ridiculous format for the Copa. Two groups of 5 so 4 group games each just to eliminate one team from each group before the quarters.

Brazil isn't the most obvious location I'd have chosen, but I guess there's only a few South American countries that boast the infrastructure to host such a large scale event.

From a footballing perspective I hope it goes ahead, however if there's any threat to the safety of the participants, or indeed the wider public then it should be cancelled, public health must take priority over anything else in the present climate.

The New York Times with a piece on the news that Brazil are to host the Copa America - currently experiencing 60,000 new cases a day - you wonder what the clubs (especially the European ones) are thinking about their players at the tournament)

Ridiculous that any cross country / continent tournaments are happening at all. From someone who wants football to resume normally ASAP.

Should have just continued with domestic fixtures for the next year.
