Coaches
We have the best goalkeeper coach in the country in Billy Mercer but do we need to employ an attacking coach of similar ability ?
At times our ponderous build up play gets us knowhere, so do we need new approach via a new coach?

Re: Coaches
Chester mentioned this on a diff thread, Newcastle did it and there was a notable difference
Re: Coaches
Is the quality of our attacking, dictated by the quality of our attacking players to some extent?
Re: Coaches
I think the difference was the introduction of pace, when ASM and Wilson are in the team they play better footballGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 10:12 amChester mentioned this on a diff thread, Newcastle did it and there was a notable difference

Re: Coaches
Have we really got the best goalkeeper coach in the country?
Heaton and Pope have certainly been great signings and I'm sure that Mercer has played a big part in their improvement.
By the same token, we’ve seen little if anything from any of the other keepers, albeit only fleeting opportunities, to suggest they are coached by the best in the country.
Not a dig at Mercer, but surely some of the bigger clubs will have coaches as good, if not better.

Agreed... Doesn't seem to have worked any magic on our 2nd and 3rd choice goalies. Pope may just have natural talent which any decent coach could work with. Heaton was already a decent keeper when he cameDCWat wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 10:39 amHave we really got the best goalkeeper coach in the country?

Re: Coaches
It's an interesting angle and something I'd not given two thoughts to until I read recently about the impact Graeme Jones has had on Newcastle. The turnaround in their performances and results since just after he took the job was pretty remarkable.
Of course you could never absolutely quantify how much of the improvement was down to him, but I think, looking at the data, if you performed a statistical test looking for a significant difference before and after his appointment you'd find it.

Re: Coaches
Re my original statement on Billy Mercer
He turned Lee Grant into a reasonable keeper and Tom and Nick into England internationals where has another keeper coach equalled or bettered that?

Re: Coaches
The impact Graeme Jones had was significantly assisted by the return from injury of Saint-Maximin and Wilson, that was the key, not some genius coaching, though he may have no doubt helped.
Re: Coaches
Was it Central Coaches at Whitegate garage?
"I saw the headline and I thought because I was speaking to a big Chelsea bloke when giving out the English and International Football Organization Plan leaflet in town, you know and he was talking about going in Chelsea pubs on the **** and European coach tours and he mentioned a coach company local and I said Central Coaches there and he said something else like Culshaws."

Tom Heaton repeatedly thanked BM for helping him improve.

Re: Coaches
I've mentioned this before re.the attacking coach but on reading the Ian Woan article on here the other day...I'm sure hes more than capable for putting his ideas forward. He scored some cracking goals during is career.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 10:10 amWe have the best goalkeeper coach in the country in Billy Mercer but do we need to employ an attacking coach of similar ability ?

Re: Coaches
Yes those were the days when Central Coaches used to ferry us clarets up and down the country to watch our beloved team, with scarfs out and flags at the windows.Pstotto wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 7:02 pmWas it Central Coaches at Whitegate garage?

Wasn't a pleasent experience tieing ones scarf round ones neck on a cold winters day after it had been flying down the motorway

How we made it to Hillsborough in 74 I'll never know, Huddersfield-to-M62.

Re: Coaches
You can't coach instinct (that's what they call it when strikers are really good )
And it could also be applied to goalkeepers.

You can tell a cat to be like a dog and it will smile and purr.
Re: Coaches
So maybe you can coach instinct after all...

Don't believe me, I just believe the hype.

If you called its dinner 'Blackburn Rovers' and said 'Blackburn Rovers' every time dinner was ready...
