Am old fashioned hardware shop that sells everything...yes even fork handles.
A high class greengrocers selling quality fresh produce.
A good fishmongers.
A decent bookshop.
There's an excellent fishmongers next door to Argos.
AO wholesale have a retail counter via the side door, accessed from the car park. It's brilliant.

Nando’s would be good and a Pizza Express would be good from
a restaurant perspective.

I would like to see some better craft ale pubs

For me the biggest difference that would attract me more into the town to shop would be to ban smoking outside.

The town has a big college these days so Waterstones would be a good edition. However got to ask whether it can compete against Amazon.

H&M as a clothes store would be good too.

Having a town centre that operates from 5 pm is the key for me too. So promoting it as a place where you can go after work and still shop etc and not just the weekends for those who are working during the week.

Roy Marlors was a pretty decent mens outfitters back in the day..

Couldn't beat a pair of Farah's for part of your school uniform

Mark at the Colne Bookshop can order and get books faster than Amazon can deliver.

Burnley Town Centre April 1980. Map from Burnley Reference Library.
A thriving town centre. All kinds of shops and services.
No Pound Shops, No Food Banks, No Charity Shops.
Ah the wonder of Woolworths and the Pick and Mix on a Saturday morning.
I do have a higher res version but couldn't post it on here.
Enjoy.

If M&S closes it will be an killer blow to the town centre. The store, especially their food outlet, brings people in from the more affluent surrounding areas - the shoppers who have expendable incomes.

The food outlet also drags either me or the missus into the town centre and we always end up calling into other shops or buying some lunch to take home from one of the food outlets in the market hall. If it closes, I'll just drive over Rawtenstall.

Boots, Nat West and M&S are still in the same locations.

Barclays and WH Smith are still in the town, but have changed locations.

Olivanders and that ice cream place that used to sell 50 different flavours including a man city blue coloured "daiquiri ice".
Debenhams with all the departments except women's clothing.

Burton's - some folk on here still need to carry out their promises about revealing themselves in that particular shop window.
Where do people go now with no Burton’s window?

I think most towns and cities would now love a Debenhams. That ship has sailed though.

Not sure why you’d want a department store that caters for everyone but women though?
