Might people be wanting to visit family and friends? Just a thought.
Yes, but tough. Why risk transporting the virus?

I don't stay indoors. I go to plenty of places within walking distance.
My partner and I have both had the two vaccinations, but we accept that we could still carry and transmit the virus.
Some people do not learn.

I can just about get my head around people’s anxiousness when it comes to foreign travel, to read you including domestic travel in your previous statement is quite frankly terrifying.

Normal life must return at some point. If it doesn’t, then what has been the point of it all? We may as well have all perished last March if all we’ve got are Zoom meetings and walks around the block. Jesus wept.

I think "terrifying" is about as melodramatic as it gets.

Normal life? Until the virus is completely under control we will not have normal lives.

Not melodramatic. If anything, terrifying isn’t dramatic enough. If we can’t see family and friends now, after being double-jabbed, then we never will again. You can’t control viruses, I’m afraid.

Iam currently down south, spreading the East lancs virus without any problems

I believe the government is ahead of it's deadline for vaccinating all adults, wouldn't it be a good idea for people to wait a little longer.
Currently there are locations with quite a serious infection rate, this could easily escalate.

We have always balanced the risks of living against the fact that we only get one life, and we must try and make the best of it.

Covid increased the risk, but we won’t ever be any safer than having had a double-jab. There’s nothing better on the horizon. This is it now. Time to learn to live again.

You’re too late, I was down south last week spreading it round.

On a serious note, with a rare exception, everything felt pretty safe and most people seemed to be mindful of others. I’m still surprised though at the amount of men who leave the toilets without washing their hands.

I had to stop in a hotel in the UK for work on the first night hotels were allowed to open for non work use. A man came into the reception with no mask on and I thought could have had an underlying condition. He then coughed all through the reception area and all the way down the hotel corridor without covering his mouth. I would have had it out with him but he was in the room next to me. There are plenty more like him and many many not social distancing. Travelling abroad and queuing in airports just means increased chance of confined spaces and spreading. Its just not needed at the moment. I agree that people cannot be shut away for ever though and should feel they can go out in the UK. There will probably be never no risk but its still too high for overseas travel.

That makes very little sense.
We could try to live cleaner and healthier lives for starters.
An obvious question: if it's safe to travel almost anywhere why do we need masks?
Perhaps we should start "living again" by all taking them off?

Some people seem to be under the impression that one day we'll all wake up and covid will have disappeared, just like waving a magic wand.
Unfortunately it's not going to happen, we're going to have to get on with our lives and accept there's a miniscule risk of getting seriously ill with it, just like there's risk everytime you get in a car.

I hope one day you can bring yourself to start living again, Bill. It’s no fun living like we have done for the past year and a bit. We’ll all come out of this at our own pace, of course, but come out of it we must.

To be perfectly honest with you I haven't found it so bad really.
I have plenty of interests and live in a nice part of the country where I can walk, cycle or even jog, not "around the block" as you put it.
but my real point is that i don't think I have the right to put other peoples' lives and long term health at risk for the sake of a poxy two week holiday :D

I don't think making the most out of a situation (and all within guidelines) really equates to the "I'm allright Jack" mentality.

I fully support the moving of Portugal up the risk scale. The explanation given by our government is absolutely correct and I hope is supported by everyone wanting life in this country to get back to normal as soon as possible. Hopefully on 21 st of this month despite the scaremongering by some scientists and commentators .
The link between this awful virus and hospitalisations and death has been broken. This will get stronger each day that passes.

And I totally agree with you on that.
But please consider this, there is a vast majority of people who can't afford a holiday whether they think they need one or not. Their situations are not eased by the easing of travel restrictions.

A lot of people here would take 10 day stay at home if it meant a holiday abroad was possible. Instead a 21 day quarantine in a hotel with a wristband tracker and a prison sentence for leaving your room is what greets those coming back from a holiday here. These restrictions have been in place since March last year.

With a recent rise in the 7 day case rate to 1.6 per 100,000 compared to our long term average 7 day case rate of 0.12 per 100,000 we are currently banning dine in services, all school children are studying at home and it's illegal to be in a group larger than 2 outside your own home.

This compares to the current 7 day average of 52.5 per 100,000 in the UK and on the road to removing all restrictions in a few weeks.

Given the freedoms you already have, I therefore find all the grumbling comical, given Singapore basically are half way to a lockdown because the case rate approached 1/50th of the rate in the UK.

Not to mention that it's been illegal since April 2020 to leave your front door without a face mask with no exceptions indoors or outdoors. Try going for a walk outside when it's 34C and 85% humid with a face mask! Like I said, the restrictions you have are very weak compared to other countries, if you think they are too tough then just be grateful they are not tougher.
But Singapore has always been a touch "command and control" hasn't it ? Chewing gum sale is banned there still I believe. With the sort of vaccination rates now seen in the UK we surely should be seeing some relaxations otherwise what's the point ?
Personally I feel some sympathy for the situation people in Portugal found themselves in but , yes, I suppose you can say they knew the risks.

Anyone else find it hilarious to see these clowns get hit with extra charges for flights etc when the rules change on them in mid holiday?
Just read about some "Manager" and her kids (Indi and Fleur for god's sake).
Anyone choosing to risk it at this moment gets no sympathy.
No one is that desperate for some sunshine.
It’s probably worth noting that a large majority of people who booked in good faith for 2020 decided to defer their holiday abroad, and some of them will have been instructed to take the holiday when it became possible to do so, or lose their money. I heard a few stories like that on radio 5 the other day.

Almost as many as 2007.

People can travel to and from East lancs without any tests etc.
How is that safer than travelling to Tenerife with less than 1% infection rates, and tests before returning

That's the great thing about airports, you only ever bump into people from Tenerife (less than 1% infection rate) at them. ;)

People can travel to and from East lancs without any tests etc.
How is that safer than travelling to Tenerife with less than 1% infection rates, and tests before returning
East Lancs- own car, make your own space, no queues....
Tenerife - Airport mixing with people from all over the place, queues, 4 hours in a cramped space with little social distancing, a small cramped toilet and basin. Mixing and queues at the other end with more people, then the holiday then the journey back .....

I think I you knew that you just want to be able to go on holiday abroad regardless.

It's been such an awful year for deaths.

Almost as many as 2007.

It's not even worth thinking about.

I doubt many people will bother to click on your link, so here’s a brief excerpt :-

Those who went, went based upon the rules as they were at the time. Not sure why they deserve to be called clowns and idiots.
Well said. The only clown or idiot is the OP.

That's the great thing about airports, you only ever bump into people from Tenerife (less than 1% infection rate) at them. ;)
I know, but you'd be masked up, and socialy distanced, just like anywhere else you go, plus most people will have tested negative before going, so not dangerous at all compared with daily life

Aircraft..... As safe as operating theatre

Me down south... 5 pubs, 3 hotels, 7 cafes.... No testing, now that's really safe

It's a completely crazy concept this early on & the scenerio you've mentioned as the potential to seriously endanger public health, tested or not tested, vaccinated or not vaccinated, I don't even think we've passed the first year milestone from the very first person receiving the jab, we also know that some of the testing kits aren't that accurate, we'll go a few steps back because of it, far too much as been loosened too early.

Stay at home unless you need to buy essential fence paint. Why can't people just follow this simple rule?

To be perfectly honest with you I haven't found it so bad really.
I have plenty of interests and live in a nice part of the country where I can walk, cycle or even jog, not "around the block" as you put it.
but my real point is that i don't think I have the right to put other peoples' lives and long term health at risk for the sake of a poxy two week holiday :D
You certainly aren't alone there. There are a lot of people, in nice pleasant areas and with comfortable homes, many of whom can work from home and get paid as normal, who think that in the interests of everyone's health and wellbeing that sort of life should continue.

And strangely enough, there are a lot of people who live in cramped accommodation who are not working and are not in nice areas who don't feel the same. Selfish blighters they must be.

Some people seem to thing going abroad is a human right. It is not. Wether you are visiting family abroad or not is irrelevant. You do not have the right to go into any country you choose and then be accepted straight back into the UK. If you can not go 1/2 years without going abroad then you have serious issues. Get a grip. Imagine what these people would have been like during the war or in centuries past when people went a lifetime without leaving their home town, never mind their home country. If they could do that you can go a year or two without going the costa del whatever and shouting at Spanish/Portuguese waiters for not being able to speak good english as they bring you your pie and chips with a pint of carling before you go and get drunk and ruin the reputation of Britain further.

Do you mind? I eat the local Paella and drink San Miguel before I abuse the waiters. Carling? I'd drink my own p*ss first..and anyhow San Miguel is stronger so I can start the abuse even quicker.... :D 8-)
