Johnstone Paint Trophy
With the academy now being Cat 1, does this allow us entry into the Johnstone Paint Trophy? And if so would we enter the under 23 team?

As much as I detest cat 1 clubs being able to play an U23 side in the competition I think if we are able to be in it we should be. Would provide invaluable experience for our youth players development to be playing in competitive games against professionals.

I’ve never really understood the resistance some fans have to this. I’m all for it and hope we enter next season. It will give the kids some competitive experience against first team squads and maybe throw up some decent away days (if they ever return).

Yes is the easy answer but we opted not to take part last season.claretburns wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 6:48 pmWith the academy now being Cat 1, does this allow us entry into the Johnstone Paint Trophy? And if so would we enter the under 23 team?

I’d be amazed if the new owners didn’t take the opportunity to participate given the push on youth development.

I can't see why we wouldn't participate in this comp if we have the option, and yes it would certainly provide invaluable experience for the young lads.
Re: Johnstone Paint Trophy
Developing footballers lack meaningful games, which add sharpness and learning against hardened pros.
That is why they have to go on loan.
All for it. A trip to Wembley again, would be nice!

Apparently the EFL Trophy will be known as the Papa John's Trophy until 2023.
Imagine the pleasure for all those fans who yearn for their away days in Mansfield. Not to mention the ticks from all those new grounds.
Personally I'd rather have conference teams in there than U21 teams but that's the way it is and has been since 2016.
Interestingly it's not exactly the U23 team that takes part, the rules are:
- Academy teams must start at least six players aged 21 or under (at the end of june of the previous season).
- Those teams can only include two players over the age of 21 who have made 40 or more senior appearances (before the start of the season)
So the likes of Phillips, Dunne and Cooney wouldn't be eligible except as an overage player. I'm not sure if non-league games count as senior appearances.
I can understand the club not wanting to take part in their first season as an Academy 1 team. It might only be 3 games in the group stages but it would have been a distraction in an already condensed season.

Re: Johnstone Paint Trophy
I’m expecting us to enter next season should we be invited but there are a lot of clubs ahead of us in the queue.
