Sad news. I have heard from a good friend in Amble - where he lived - that he has passed away.

Thoughts are with his family. One of my dad’s heroes.

Very sad news indeed.
Brilliant player and servant to the club.
Tough, uncompromising but fair as a defender, and capable of playing football too.
Would probably have had many more international caps had the competition at Right back not been so stiff at the time.
RIP.

Always sad to hear about the passing of a Clarets legend.

So very sad. Cool John Angus at right back. Can see him now in the warm up just before kick off passing the ball between himself and Alex Elder in front of the Longside. Only a couple of caps due, as mentioned earlier, to the quality of right backs available when in his prime. RIP John Angus.

I'm so sad at this news today. What a player he was in that team I first saw. I've just thought back to my first game, only Alex Elder and Jimmy Robson still with us.

I managed to see him once at Villa Park-by all accounts possibly the best right back the club has had

Yes one of my favourites, a classy tough fullback, his duels with Albert Scanlon were worth the admission price alone.
Sounds to have been a very nice guy too according to Ashington who knew him when he retired back to his native north east.

Think you can add to that Terry Paine at Southampton and Clive Clarke at WBA. Nobody messed John around. What a player!

Terrific RB by the standards of those days.

I suppose I was lucky in that I saw most of his career at Burnley. Top, top golfer as well, who won the annual PFA Golf Tournament at least a couple of times as well.

Calm, cool Angus will live long in my memory. Thanks John.

When all around were losing their heads, John Angus was always there to calm things with a neat, incisive pass out of defence.
It may be a story that's been added to down the years and become almost mythical, when he stopped a shot on the line then calmly ran the ball along the goal line before passing the ball out to a teammate.
RIP John and thanks for the memories.

The news of Johns passing has left me feeling very sad indeed. Like most other fans of his era John was a big favorite of mine. Outstanding in every way. My clearest memory of John was when we played Arsenal away in 64/5. We were losing 2-0 at ht and John had got a bad injury. Clearly no subs in those days so injured players stayed on mainly as a nuisance value. He literally was playing on one leg. For some reason he played more or less at center forward for the second half. Sadly we lost 3-2 but John remarkably scored both our goals. My memory is fading a bit these days but I am sure he also had a goal disallowed or hit the post. I just remember him just missing out on maybe the greatest hat trick by a Burnley player. RIP John Angus. Thank you for all the pleasure you gave me and thousands of other Clarets.

I too attended Johns testimonial in '73.

The amount of footballing talent who played in the 2 games that night is a testament of how well respected and thought of John was.

RIP John and thank you!

He was a tremendous player who for me, watching my first BFC matches in sheer wonder, symbolised everything that was great - and is great - about our club.

One of my favourite ever Clarets. As a young schoolboy I used to go to Turf Moor with my grandad in the early 60's and he would always tell me that it would be a long time before we saw as good a right back in a Claret shirt again.
My grandad was absolutely spot on with that.
I was also at his testimonial game.

Always a shame to hear of a Clarets legend passing, and although I am sadly too young to have ever been privileged to witness John Angus and the rest of that remarkable squad live, their achievements will never be forgotten.

That's really sad news indeed.
He was my favourite from that Championship side and I only ever wanted to play No 2 after that. I did mostly too (though at no great level). I still like to closely watch full backs in any game I watch and J A is always a benchmark at the back of my mind.

RIP John Angus, thanks for the memories and commiserations to his family.

Without doubt the finest right back to wear a Burnley shirt, and for me one of the best and classiest defenders I have ever seen. This is sad news indeed, but his memory will live on in the history of Burnley Football Club. Thanks for the memories, John, you will always be a true Claret hero.

I’ve not logged on today until tonight and have just seen this news.Like so many fans and posters on here of a certain age I thought of John as a star. He was of the Bobby Charlton mould. A great pro and a nice man. Still have the programme from his testimonial.

Very sad news. Undoubtedly one of the finest full backs to play for Burnley and could have played more games for England but for the likes of Armfield et al. A one club man, cultured and fair and never seemed to panic. He could certainly mix it if required - ask a certain Terry Paine. I remember a newspaper picture taken at a snow covered White Hart Lane when things got a bit feisty and he was photographed striding purposefully across the pitch. Kept that cutting for years and wish I could see that picture again.
RIP John...it was a privilege to see you play.

He would have been playing the first time I saw Burnley in 60-61. He looked such a mild-tempered man, but he wasn't to be messed with on the pitch.

RIP John.
