Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Eng win the toss and bat first.
Stone comes in to the side.
23-0 with nearly an hour gone.
Someone tell Sibley and Burns were not still playing for last weeks draw.

Test match cricket….. 5 days….. fine for them to score slow early and get the ball out of shape so scoring becomes easier.

67-0 at lunch.
Rather than that 120-4
Rather than that 120-4
Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Easy to be wise after the event but our current batting line up really concerns me. Crawley is not a test match number 3. 76 for 2.
Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
73 for 2 Zak Crawley out for a duck
Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Ricky Ponting once said that Australia aimed for four runs per over during their peak days. That way they still got plenty of runs on the board and never got bogged down even if they lost a few wickets.
Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Crawley hasn’t made double figures in his last 6 innings for England

We may of course be lucky to get to 120 for only 4.
Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
That's a great sentiment. But I would suggest their top 5 was slightly better than our current line up!

The trouble when you don't score and take the game forward is we could be 120-7 at Tea.
I don't mind one blocker but I can't think of many teams in cricket that start with two.

If Crawley goes away and plays county cricket and even overseas for a couple of seasons, then I think he could make it at Test Level
His head has gone. Completely scrambled at the minute

Didn't need to play ( especially Crawley's ) at all 3 wickets . Not moving their feet and getting in line .

No 6 averages less than 25 and then NZ are into our tail. They will be the happier of the 2 sides at the moment, though as ever don't judge it until both sides have batted on the wicket. But i can't see the Kiwis being as bad as out top order....

175-6..... England's 4th choice wicket keeper isn't really that good. (Buttler, Foakes, Bairstow........... Bracey)

175/6. This has got to be the worst batting line up for England I have ever seen in my 65 years watching cricket

Obviously we don't like playing in front of crowds. Hope the football team can handle it better.

Shows how poor test cricket is at the moment. Probably at the expense of one day cricket unfortunately.

The crowd have resorted to singing football songs and about the England football team rather than about the cricket.
Such has been the poor showing.

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
As ever on a CM cricket thread, plenty of reactionary stuff.... Score too slow, score too quick, wickets go quickly, it's the worst batting line up ever (Worse than some of those sides in the 90's getting run over by every country - really?)
Batting depth is a little short, Burns is capable, Sibley is obstinate, Root is class, there's potential in Pope and Crawley, on bad runs of form at the moment, and missing Stokes and Buttler. They'll be grand when they get into form, and get the stars back.

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
I was ridiculed on here by some for suggesting that with the return of Stokes and Buttler to the team we would be stronger in the Batting Department as well as suggesting Bairstow, and even Jason Roy would help.
Bairstowe averages around 32 in Test Cricket and from what I have seen Bracey and Crawley will never average above 30 however many matches they get.
A massive difference facing World Class Bowlers than Championship sides packed with pretty ordinary bowlers.

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Roy may not be the answer as the current openers ( Burns and Sibley) are playing well .
Roy has 5 Test matches and 4 were against a very strong Australian Attack, think he is still as good a batter for consideration as Bracey ( who thinks he can bat at 3 for England)

I think Roy isn't right for Test Match Cricket..... I'd say Hameed is probably next on the conveyor belt isn't he?

This Test Series was not part of the Future Tours Programme and is therefore not part of the World Test Championship with no points at stake.
Obviously NZ quite happy to make numerous changes to their lineup knowing that the bigger prize will be contested against India down in Southampton.

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
It might be worth giving Lawrence a go opening, to balance it out with Burns?
When the all rounders are back we bat down to 8 or 9 and probably Lawrence misses out on a middle order slot.
Then there's a no.3 spot up for grabs for the likes of Pope, Bairstow etc..

Bairstow is not good enough. Same technical flaws over and over, his ship has sailed. It's like when they kept calling Ballance back up, and he got out in the same way over and over. Similar to Roy.

A reasonably balanced day. 258-7 on a pitch that did plenty all day is a fair performance. See if they can add another 90+ tomorrow and England will be marginally in front.

Good day of cricket in the end, so much better to watch with crowds in in a way. Hopefully we can get to around 330 tomorrow. Big second innings coming up in this Test for a few of them.

Alex Lees has been decent again this season so far. It’s one of those how many untested players can we have in one lineup though.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 10, 2021 6:18 pmI'm struggling to think of any others to be honest.

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Crasher Hameed ? Seriously ?
He’s had a few double figures scores and he’s next in line, right.
Was there today, Crawley’s shot was awful.
The Hollies belted out some tunes as normal but it was brilliant to be part of a big sporting crowd again !

Dawid Malan? Good against pace and has previous in Oz, 100 at Perth I believe. Worth another go I'd say.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 10, 2021 6:30 pm

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
Good recovery by England in the end, Burns again showing his test match temperament just a shame he couldn't get another ton, but Lawrence played brilliantly in the evening session, and he along with Stone and Wood have at least given England something to bowl with, hopefully the tail can wag some more tomorrow and we post 300+.
I'm afraid Bracey's England career could well be short-lived, he just looks totally out of his depth, and Crawley is just out of nick, however he's shown plenty in his brief England stint thus far to suggest he'll have a successful spell at this level, although he may find he has to return to county cricket to rediscover his form again.
As for this being the worst England batting line up then I can only guess you weren't around in the 90's when we were constantly blown away for virtually nothing, even by the smaller nations such as Zimbabwe on a couple of notable occasions.
Add Buttler & Stokes to that XI and it looks much deeper and experienced, plus this would allow us to select a spinner if we wished.
Bairstow & Roy fantastic one-day players as their record demonstrates, but neither has the right technique for a test match, just look at how often they've both been clean bowled after leaving a huge gap between bat and pad, good test bowlers will quickly suss out any weaknesses and exploit them to the full.

Re: Eng Vs NZ 2nd test
I went to the 1st day yesterday with 4 other mates. We were surprised to get tickets and for the weather to hold out. All in all it was a fairly relaxed occasion.
70% capacity meant less queuing at the toilets and the bar which was good. Masks needed to be worn in the concourse but not in the seats. The only time we got asked for proof of negative covid tests was when we got off the bus at the ground.
All in all a lot more relaxed experience than I thought it was going to be. Bag searches were fairly relaxed too. Great to experience an atmosphere again, even though England struggled at times.
The game itself is evenly balanced. Ball still swinging and a fairly slow outfield. Get to near 300 and we are well in this.
