Re: RHS Bridgewater
Very good Tiger ... extremely easy to get to (about a mile from M60) It will be a few years before it matches Wisley (Woking, Surrey) Rosemoor (Torrington, Devon) Harlow Carr (Harrogate) or Hyde Hall (Chelmsford, Essex) as the planting is so young but... they have done wonders in the past 3 years, as its only been open for a few weeks now.

Re: RHS Bridgewater
It will take a few years to establish into a mature garden but I think it is fabulous for the North.

Re: RHS Bridgewater
Hopefully will get to visit sometime next year. Saw one of the programmes on You tube but couldn't find the others. Good to see such a large neglected area brought back into use and also create jobs. As an aside, the new man at the top of the RHS is called, appropriately, Mr Weed!

Re: RHS Bridgewater
We went on Tuesday and were pleasantly surprised with the experience. It will be interesting to return at quarterly intervals to see the progress. You can join the RHS as a single member and a friend, spouse, partner can joing your visits for nowt. I asked about the programmes on TV and there has only been the one so far. They intend to film at regular intervals over the season.
Re: RHS Bridgewater
No 2 programme on 17th next week ...
Re: RHS Bridgewater
I've been working on this from 2016 until present, went back in on Tuesday for the first time since last August. Looks absolutely incredible, well worth a visit. Amazing to see it go from this to this

We chatted with several volunteers on our walk around, and everyone said it had been great helping create (what will be in the years to come) a great visitor attraction for the Northwest.ChrisG wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 10:12 amI've been working on this from 2016 until present, went back in on Tuesday for the first time since last August. Re: RHS Bridgewater
Absolutely, this is only the first phase, over the next 5 to 10 years, there is much more planned. The current bit that is open only takes up about 30% of the overall site.
If you have a look on Google Maps, the site boundaries are Leigh Road to the north, the M60 to the East, Bridgewater Canal to the south, and the new access road to the west, which gives you an idea of the scale of the place.

Re: RHS Bridgewater
Hi Bosscat, great pictures, great to see RHS extending to north west. Before this covid-19 "pause" I'd get to Wisley every few months, planning to go again soon.
I'll plan a trip to Bridgewater when I'm back in the north west.
Re: RHS Bridgewater
We tend to visit Wisley (Step Daughter and Family in Woking) along with Rosemoor and Hyde Hall. Harlow Carr at least once a year, and now with Bridgewater its great here in the North for Garden lovers...Paul Waine wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 10:29 amHi Bosscat, great pictures, great to see RHS extending to north west. Re: RHS Bridgewater
Went last week and thought it was brilliant. The grounds were originally the estate of Worsley New Hall which was demolished after the war, but the original hall, Worsley Old Hall is still standing and is now a great pub, still called Worsley Old Hall, and which is part of the same chain as Aspinall Arms, Bull at Broughton, etc.
The garden is close to Worsley village centre where the Bridgewater Canal was started. You can see the entrances to the underground canals/mines from which coal was extracted and taken by barge to Manchester.
Going back to the garden, I’ve been told that the playground is great for kids.

Watching Great Northern Garden Build on BBC2 now. (Well, it's a break from Euro 2020).
Impressive.
Renewed RHS membership using Tesco vouchers, 3 x 1 offer.

Re: RHS Bridgewater
Saw the first programme via You tube so hope the second one is available there. Bridgewater is certainly high on our list of places to visit whenever we can get to the UK - hopefully next year.
Harlow Carr has always been a favourite of mine. First went there when it was owned by the Northern Horticultural Society prior to being taken over by the RHS. In those days, I don't think there was even a cafe, let alone Betty's. Money was always a problem but their seed distribution to members was fantastic.
Hope you enjoy your visit!
