Most people are just praising what was a very good and solid performance. The fact you didn’t see the match but are agreeing with a critical poster’s analysis shows your agenda.

I only watched the 2nd half. I thought we were OK.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:17 pmI only watched 55 mins myself, to have an opinion in rileybobs world how long do we get? 5 mins 10 mins 15 mins or another set time, he’s still allowed his opinion he’s probably based it upon what he’s read & how he feels.
Am I allowed to think that based on the 2nd half only?

Yes, today his tactics and team selection was spot on and won us the game. Trippier at left back to contain one of their best players, playing Phillips and giving him more licence to get forward and playing Sterling who when Kane dropped deep runs in behind defences.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:19 pmI didn't see a lot of the game so cannot comment on the performance but are you suggesting that a narrow 1-0 victory at home against an 'also ran' vindicates his position as national team manager?
We only scored one goal but we were very comfortable and thats the first time we've ever won our opening game in the Euro's. We could have drawn against Ireland or the Swiss like we did in 90 and 96 but instead we beat our groups toughest opponents who were runners up of the last World Cup
So yes today Southgate demonstrated why he is the England manager and those on here rubbishing his selection are just messageboard windbags

Agree with that reply.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 4:00 pmNail on the head for me, an important opening victory, and we managed the game well 2nd half after we scored.
Phillips was the pick of the bunch, but yes it was a turgid affair I must admit, and if it had finished 0-0 the reaction would have been very different.
Croatia definitely aren't the team they were back in 2018, and after watching that even the Scots will fancy their chances of a result against them.
The group stage should always have been a formality, and it's when we get to the round of 16 that the true tests will come.
So a good start, but I'm certainly not getting carried away just yet, I've learned my lessons after watching England for so many tournaments now.
We did OK, certainly not a bad performance, nor was it one to get the pulse racing. I wouldn’t criticise any individual player - probably the worst performer was Kane who hardly got a kick, and I would be concerned that due to that we would need a Grealish to open up defences, as well as someone to stretch them and someone to find the space.
It’s riches in that attacking midfield but a lack of pure creativity - on this evidence Grealish has to start and then two others - I can see good arguments for any of Foden, Mount, Sterling and Sancho to join him.

Watching the Austria/Macedonia game and Alioski is a bit of a knob, isn’t he? So much for being a ‘real joker’.
Makes me think the incident with Dwight McNeil was probably as sinister as Dwight thought it was.

International football just isn’t fast paced like the PL even the Italy Belgium wins were clinical snoozefests for the most part, Argentina Chile was one of the worst games iv seen for a whileSilkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:06 pmI can remember Brazil played fast paced, so did Argentina,. Holland were an absolute delight as have been Germany, France, Spain, Italy in their pomp and currently Belgium. The rest knock it side to side because in a competition they are 'also rans'; a bit like Burnley who are just glad to be in the competition with little or no chance of winning it.
Re: England v Croatia
It's job done. Points matter more than performances right now and that was by far our strongest opponent in the group. World Cup finalists last time out.
Not quite sure what people were expecting. Us to whip them 5-0? Great game management and good performances all round. Barring Kane and Walker who looked strangely off it.
Most promising for me is we made a good side look ordinary and defensively they didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all and I haven't been able to say that for many, many, many years about our defence in any game. Hell we even made Romania look good the other day.

Portugal are champions and only won once in 90 minutes in the entire tournament last time round. Spain only scored 8 goals in 7 games to win the world cup. International football isn't really littered with teams blowing away the competition.

I agree that the negativity towards today's game is strange. But what is also odd is that you keep making this point, as Burnley overachieving and cutting their cloth accordingly in the premier league, and an England squad comprising the most talented footballers in the land, are two different things.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 7:25 pmThere is nothing funnier than a bunch of Burnley fans criticising how england play football.

So, in summary, there are those who thought England played really well and those who thought they were average.
For the avoidance of doubt, the latter are wrong though.
Oh, and if you watched less than 93 minutes, or you are a Burnley fan your criticism is invalid.

We did the job today and deserved the win against a side that ,while no longer posing the threat of a couple of years ago, is difficult to beat.
It won’t be against toothless sides like Croatia that we will be found wanting in this tournament

Not the next messiah, please! Once bitten twice shy and all that. Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic are ideal opposition to begin with. Not a legitimate international goalscorer in sight so easy pickings. If Dyche had these players at his disposal, and insisted we played like Southgate, he'd (quite rightly) be getting pelters on here. You also seem to be struggling to understand why these two groups of players are so very different, and why we can view their performances and results differently. The players own skills and talents are their limiting factors. Dyche understands his players well enough and knows what they are capable of doing, more importantly what they AREN'T capable of and sets them up with the best chance of not getting beat and hopefully nicking the game. Would you rather he set them up like Barca? That would be very interesting...
Southgate doesn't have the same concerns as Dyche... the players at his disposal are technically superior to ours, so SHOULD be able to break down defences by attacking with freedom and flair. Instead, he insists they play possession 'cos he's frightened of losing.
Ok so Burnley aren't the best footballing side in the league... you gotta know the reason for that tho right?

I appreciate there is a difference in quality but what more could England have done, that was an incredibly easy win. The defence (which is there weakness) performed incredibly well. Purely down to the tactics the manager set.

I’d have called players like Maldini, Baresi, Cannavaro, Ramos and plenty of others “exceptional”.
Where the hell you go to for properly good players, when you’re calling Mings exceptional, I don’t know.

Don’t you think a player can be exceptional in a game?
I thought he was a monster today. Nothing phased him at all.
If Mings plays like that throughout the tournament England will do well.
Difficult to see that back 4 not playing moving forward.

He’s a decent defender and had a good game. Not exceptional but a good game. He still strikes me as bambi on ice when he’s receiving a pass!!
Re: England v Croatia
Far from exceptional. Totally missed a cross today he should have cleared as he did against Romania. On another day could have been punished. That said. He played better than I expected. He's not a player I want starting when we have others available.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 9:42 pmDon’t you think a player can be exceptional in a game?

There's some strange stuff on this thread.
Not much mention of that fact that it was about 30 degree heat at Wembley today. I thought the line-up looked a little bit of a head scratcher beforehand but England played a clever match today and Southgate deserves credit for his selections.
I love the way he bigs up Trips...and his deployment of him today worked really well. Funny how folks have knives out for Southgate after getting us to a semi-final in his only tournament, is it because he doesn't pick Tarks? or because he respects his players wishes to stand up for equality? I'm pretty sure he's trying his best.

Perhaps what could be considered more stranger is why you never offered any sort of a detailed response/explanation offering reasons why you thought mings wasn’t exceptional, it’s easier to completely dismiss somebody’s entitled opinion, it’s harder to explain why you think that person could be wrong & to offer your different opinion.milkcrate_mosh wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 10:30 pmHave I considered the possibility that I might not agree with the opinion I've just disagreed with?
