Re: Southgate out
Absolutely delighted that I watched Southgate play 2 defensive midfielders against San Marino to prepare for the mighty Scotland

Re: Southgate out
Unfortunately games like tonight's is what happens when the media pick the team rather than the manager..
Gareth needs to grow a pair and seize his Mike Bassett stylee "England will play 4 -4 - f*"**"g -2 " moment.

For me Grealish must be in our starting 11 for the Czech Republic game
Re: Southgate out
This thread is much more boring than the match. At least that had Scotland in it.
Re: Southgate out
Said it on the other thread:
"England? Still not convinced. We have the talent, just not sure we have the manager to deploy that talent to give us the best possible chance at winning. I'm actually really concerned that we might lose to the jocks - just a gut feeling."
Came close to losing that - he is wasting some of the best English talent we have had in years - get him out. Clueless.
We could, and should, have walked that group. We could, and should, be being talked about with the likes of France, Italy and Belgium given the players we have.
This is really frustrating. We have the talent but everyone knows we will only make the quarters (maybe) and done.
We should be among the favourites not only for the Euros but for the next WC. But we are not. Only one reason why - Southgate out.

Re: Southgate out
The thing is even after he came he struggled to get in the game enough and find space - as did Rashford. This isn’t down to the individual players but more so the fact we weren’t moving the ball quickly enough from defence and through midfield. Rice and Phillips unfortunately aren’t the right partnership for games like that. It was clear we needed a change in the middle with either Bellingham or Henderson replacing one of them.
Re: Southgate out
I wasn’t surprised at all last night, I can’t get excited by England. I watched the crap Southgate served up as u21 manager and it’s the same nonsense.
It was obvious from 10 mins in that we had no way of getting past, through or round the back 5. That game cried out for some direct pace, wiped in crosses with two up front.
Manager got it very very wrong tonight. It was a premier league game and he was trying to play… well
I don’t know what he was trying to do.

Re: Southgate out
Managing England is a thankless task,we think we are better than we really are...International football is gash....roll on the Brighton game.
Re: Southgate out
I’m not normally an optimistic England fan. I always expect the worst because we are normally a team of individuals, however this team look like a team, they just seem poorly managed.
Looking at our squad we have probably the best selection of midfielders in the world. We are light up top but we have one of the best strikers in the world, and with our midfield we should be proving service. We are weak in defence, so should be attacking.
We might actually do better when we play a team that will have more of the ball in our half if we can catch them on the break. We should scrap the idea of 2 holding midfielders.
Kane seems to be getting the grief for Southgates poor management. Kane needs service an he’s had none. We would have been better lumping in long diagonal balls last night to Kane’s head and winning the second balls

Re: Southgate out
Only on here could people truly ( as opposed to ironically ) be calling for Southgate’s head . We’re through to the group stages after 2 games ffs. While i can’t doubt we looked pedestrian last night, we’re still one of around 10 teams that could win it . Though I doubt we have what it takes to beat ,say 2 “ elites” like Belgium /France ,the bizzare “ only the sh1t don’t go through “ group stages could throw up all sorts of strange combos ,

No, I would sack him now and bring in a man who is known for inspiring teams, particularly under pressure, and has a track record of getting results in a short space of time
Step forward, Mr Neil Warnock

Re: Southgate out
Much of this thread is in jest or frustration, but jokes aside we could actually question if managers like Warnock would do a better job against these teams. Certainly Dyche could have walked into that dressing room at 7:30pm and got us to beat Scotland. That centre back three were a total liability, only one was an actual centre back and he was past it years ago.
Dozens of managers would set us up so we beat Scotland. Where the prep, the tactics, the masterplan come in for Southgate is to get us to beat the top teams. That will remain to be seen, but I’m not close to hopeful.

Southgate has zero credibility. Warnock and Dyche do

Re: Southgate out
I can’t think why. He was rubbish. The game lost all its momentum when he came on. He received the ball about seven or eight times and went to ground on every occasion after poncing about going nowhere.
Re: Southgate out
It doesn't matter who he picks. If he insists on playing two holding midfielders in every game, we'll end up with more of the rubbish that we saw last night.
We had one shot on target in the whole game at home against Scotland. A Chelsea reserve player got MotM.
Burnley would beat Scotland.
Team selection was wrong, the formation was wrong, the tactics were wrong and the performance was awful.

Re: Southgate out
The problem is teams are very aware of England's two star players in Foden and Grealish. Neither has had a great impact so far and both are being closely watched by the opposition. It's not going to be easy for either of them going forward in the tournament.dermotdermot wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 11:23 amI can’t think why. He was rubbish. Re: Southgate out
I reckon the most important player for us and the extent to which we progress is more dependent on Kane than any other player. He’s been nonexistent so far but hopefully that will change quickly.
Re: Southgate out
Kane, like all top class strikers can score a goal out of nothing so he needs to be kept in the team come what may. Calvert-Lewin & Rashford simply can't score the goals that Kane does.

Re: Southgate out
If Southgate takes out one of Rice and Phillips, brings in Grealish and Rashford and takes out Sterling I think we’ll see Kane having more opportunity to show us whether he can improve on his two performances so far.
