England National Team as a European force

Post by EK Claret » Sat Jun 19, 2021 12:22 am

Where does the England national team rank in European Football?
So let’s look at the heavyweights Italy, France,Germany, Spain and England qualify for most major tournaments every second year, the major countries have won the trophies regularly in my lifetime. Are England ever likely to win a trophy again? since the 66 WCF the big four plus wee countries like Greece, Denmark, Portugal and Czechoslovakia have won the trophies, I think the problem for England is that there are far too many foreign players in the EPL and that has hindered home grown talent? Can England win a tournament in the next 50 years will football ever come home?

Did I hear the commentary right last night at one point I heard ...think it was Matterface say the showpiece event of the Championship so far 😆....two League one sides at best playing out their European Championship final in the second game of an event neither will trouble the latter stages of.

We're where we have been for the last 50 years or so, round about the 5th or 6th best side in Europe.

The problem isn't necessarily the players it is, and always has been, the managers failing to get the best out of the team over the years.

Blind man on a galloping horse would see that Kane isn't at full fitness and he hasn't got someone like Son alongside him.

Playing 2 def mids against Scotland was also odd.

Grealish and Sancho must wonder that they've got to do to start, or in Sanchos case even get on as a sub.
He's one of the in form wingers in Europe and isn't getting a look in.

Getting to the WC semis was a very good achievement, but we should be confirmed as through to the next round by now and we aren't....

There's a good summary about 2/3 down this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_ ... ampionship

We're pretty good at qualifying- up there with the best (10 qualifications)- but crap at then even reaching a semi, let alone an actual final.

Denmark has been to more semis than us (2 v 1) and they went on to win the final after one of those.
Serbia got 2 semis (losing finalists both times).
Wales have managed 1 semi out of 2 qualifications.

Tournaments are clearly a very weak suit for England football.

That's insulting to League one sides Steve, but you're 100% correct neither will be in the Championship for much longer.

England might reach the KO stages, but we won't get any further than the quarter-finals at best.

And despite their battling display last night I can't see Scotland beating Croatia, Scotland's problem is they simply can't score goals, and if you can't score goals you won't win games, not that England are exactly prolific it must be said.

Entirely down to bad management. We chuck out caps like confetti and never play a regular starting XI. The teams that are successful are the ones that play as a team. Too often we play like a bunch of strangers.
The only England side that ever played like a team was Hoddles, and they shafted him for nothing to do with football.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't with England hence why the pressure & scrutiny is just too much

Everyone is always bleating on about picking the best players in form, which changes monthly/yearly as the season develops, but unfortunately this doesn't allow the 'club' team feeling and players to get used to playing with each other. If the managers does develop a regular side then if those players aren't quite doing it he's criticised for keeping faith with them.

Unfortunately for Southgate he's picked too many players who are too similar and there's no flexibility in the way to play. Last night needed a change of system after 60 mins as it clearly wasn't working. Changing like for like had no effect at all. As always, there is no intelligence or understanding of opening a team up. I heard an Italian legend Tardelli sum us up perfectly when he said "they Run, they get the ball upfield quickly and they play with intensity (basically the Prem style), if they don't do that then they disappoint".

International football is slower, more methodical, more tactical and when it comes to the crunch our players ain't intelligent enough & constantly fall short. It's certainly not a lack of ability or athleticism. It's in the head and the understanding of the game where the best win. We are never able to manipulate & control a game, we just rely on our technique, pace, intensity. If we don't have that, aka last night, we look useless. At the end of a season, our best are always shot & never look sharp enough. I would hope the WC in Qatar could see a different side to us in that respect.
