The captaincy.

Post by bobinho » Sat Jun 19, 2021 5:21 pm

Having watched that debacle last nite, along with the entire build up to the game, I couldn’t help but notice in the interviews with Kane and Robertson, one of them came across as a leader of men, and the other came across as just a bit…. Well….. meh.

I have to say Robertson “got it”. The look in his eyes told you everything you needed to know about what it meant to him. Kane came across like someone who doesn’t really like football let alone the England captain. I was embarrassed for him. I wouldn’t follow Harry Kane in a conga… Andy Robertson would have you running thru walls.

It’s not all about shouting and screaming, I get that. Ben Mee isn’t like that, but he leads by example, you can see him directing and helping people out… Kane was invisible last nite, and it wasn’t just an appalling display of footballing talent, it was an appalling display of captaincy.

I was going to post something similar. I found it interesting that they were asked what they would feel pulling on the armband for this game. I was hoping Harry would say “responsibility”. Nope, “Pride”. A very individual inward looking emotion, much like his play last night. Pride should be felt once you’ve achieved something in a roll, not just getting there. Plenty of time for pride looking at your caps and medals once you’ve retired. I hope he can learn from the poor mentality the team last night, remember Portugal didn’t win a group game 5 years ago. Might be the shake up they need.

Do you think Harry Kane is thinking about his next club? Or, what he's doing not having won anything, leading many of these players who've won lots?

Or, maybe, just not match fit?

I don’t think Kane’s looked interested enough in either game. I still don’t think we have a leader to be honest.

The problem is who else could it be given too?

Only other person I can think of is Henderson, but he’s not fit enough to start

I'd give the captaincy to Pickford...he never shuts up,probably spouting lots of shite, but Kane is a poor leader and captain.

Captaincy has so many different styles. I don’t bother with pre- or post- match just the game and the Kane of right now shouldn’t be on the field. As with Van Basten in ‘88 and Paulo Rossi in ‘82, who started dreadfully, he could well go on to get the golden boot and win the tournament for us but currently he is well off it.
Mourinho has made him a much better footballer but less of a centre forward and that is where England need him.

There are plenty of people of people you could compare Kane's captaincy to, but I don't think comparing him to a soldier who served bravely, putting his life on the line is one of them.

Robertson looked like a red card waiting to happen during the national anthems. Like a bloke who’d been caning the Columbia marching powder.

Kane, and I’ve thought as much hearing his ‘motivational’ speeches for Spurs, doesn’t come across as a leader at all.

Did you watch the Amazon Prime series about Spurs,he was giving a motivational speech before a game.....he said at the end ...'F**King come on" he couldn't even swear with any conviction.

I kinda understand what the OP is saying, however all the truly successful teams down the decades have leaders all over the field not just the captain.

That said Harry Kane's body language doesn't look right, and his performances have been lethargic, so he can hardly call out his teammates when he's not doing the business himself.

I don't know what kind of game England expected last night, but a blind man would have known it was going to be a physical battle, and you'd have to earn the right to play, yet England were simply outmuscled all over the park, and Scotland looked sharper in every position, and won pretty much every 2nd ball.

The commentators were adamant that Kane's contract situation with Spurs isn't affecting his mindset, but something's not right with him, and England can't afford to be carrying passengers in this tournament no matter how good their scoring record or reputation.

There's no I in team, even somebody like Ronaldo understands you have to work your socks off and contribute to the cause.

And for all the hype about Harry Kane in Russia and the Golden Boot, let's put that into perspective shall we, 3 of his 6 goals were scored against the mighty Panama, who were competing at their 1st ever WC, and when it truly mattered in the semi-final Kane missed a vital chance that could well have killed the game.

The obvious contender for the armband is Jordan Henderson, but sadly he's just returning from a long-term injury himself, the only other ones who spring to mind are Grealish, but he's not in the starting line-up currently, Rice maybe but he didn't have a great game last night, or possibly Stones who's arguably been one of the few England players who's played up to his billing so far.

Compare Ronaldo's determination and commitment to that of Kane, there's your answer.

That's because Ronaldo is still hungry for success despite everything he's already achieved in his career, I don't sense that desire in many if any of this England squad I'm afraid, now it could be that Kane is carrying a niggle IDK, but if that's the case then we have other options at Gareth's disposal if he so wishes, and yet for some reason he's reluctant to use them. last night was crying out for DCL to be given 20-25 minutes, and for England to simply deliver crosses into the box, yes it's old school, but at least it might have given the Scottish defenders something to defend, and we might have won some knockdowns or loose balls, as it was I doubt Grant Hanley has had an easier 90 minutes all season.

Is he world class?

Plenty of players have scored goals in the past and I’m just throwing it out there, but Fowler and Cole for instance were never world class.

Don't be fooled that Kane isn't absolutely passionate about England and playing for us. If you've ever heard him speak about England then you will have heard that he's mad for it, more than most who play for us.

Having said that I really don't like forwards being captain's, but for England who else is there with Maguire and Henderson out?

I'd say so. And I think it helps to be an accomplished international as well as being outstanding in club football. There is a very good chance Kane will end up as England's all time highest goal scorer with about seven times as many international goals as Fowler and Cole combined.

Hmm! I'd nominate Gilmour and Tierney as potential England starters based on the other night, and the former in particular is going to be a star for years to come, he and Foden will hopefully be lighting up the PL for a decade or more, both are expectational young talents, and it shows that developing youngsters can pay dividends even for the biggest clubs.

Scotland did edge the game. however as usual their problem is having an end product, and this lack of cutting edge could be their undoing for all their tenacity.
