EUROS group qualification
Can someone explain to me how they are working out placing in the groups? As I’ve just read that they go off head to head results first, then goal difference? Hence why it shows Russia above Finland as it stands, even though Finland have the better goal difference.
Now if this is the case , the only way Scotland can finish second tomorrow is if England lose and Scotland win? Yet lots of Scotland fans seem to think if England batter the Czechs, and Scotland win, then they will qualify on goal difference, yet the Czechs beat Scotland???
HELP

Re: EUROS group qualification
I'm lost with this 3rd placed nonsense, however it shouldn't be an issue for England as we're unlikely to lose to the CR, and I wouldn't put any money on Scotland winning their crunch tie either.Hedontplayforyou wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 8:26 pmCan someone explain to me how they are working out placing in the groups? Indeed if you were cynical you'd be backing a 0-0 in the England-Czech Republic match, England seemingly don't want to win the group, and the Czechs would no doubt be content with a point to secure top spot.

Re: EUROS group qualification
However they're working it out, it's pretty shite. Teams time wasting from the 10th minute (Russia) because they're in no danger of going out with 3 teams going through. How I long for the 4 groups of 4, with mouthwatering league games all over the place, and plenty of jeopardy in them, meaning that games meant something all the way through.
Now we have an extension of tedious tactics, sucking the life out of the game, before the good teams clash with each other less often in the knock out phases. What a shocking administration of the game.

A win would likely see Scotland through in third place.

Sounds like the Champions League group games. Bring back the European Cup.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 8:37 pmHowever they're working it out, it's pretty shite. Head to head, goal difference and goals scored. So the only way Scotland can finish second is if they win and England lose and Scotland end up with a better goal difference than England.
Re: EUROS group qualification
As for England we could really do with not winning the group.

Re: EUROS group qualification
Denmark just taken the lead against Russia. As it stands Denmark, Finland and Russia would all have 1 win, 1 defeat in their mini-league. Russia’s 0-3 against Belgium could see them out.

The competition seems to have gone boring over the weekend

Re: EUROS group qualification
as it did last time round, not that it ever really got that interesting. When I went to Switzerland / Austria in euro 2008, we targeted 4 games to go to. Czech Republic vs Portugal, Sweden vs Spain, France vs Holland and France vs Italy. Just good games all over the place, now, first round has too much dross, and there are fewer good games between top sides, as they only really meet in the knockout stages.

Denmark 2 up after a gift backpass.
If Denmark finish 3rd on 3 points as Ukraine are closed on 3 anybody in third on 4points is definitely through.

Re: EUROS group qualification
It definitely takes the jeopardy factor away from the group stages, just imagine if only 2 could qualify from the France, Germany & Portugal section, that would create great excitement, and also see one of the favourites exiting early, and that's probably one of the main reasons that UEFA have made this change to keep the bigger nations happy, sounds remarkably familiar to the CL format where we can pretty much name the last 32 before a ball is kicked.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 8:37 pmHowever they're working it out, it's pretty shite. Hopefully the tournament will spark into life once we reach the KO stages and the games really matter.

Re: EUROS group qualification
Kinsman said if we win the group we only play a maximum of one game away from Wembley. Another good reason to go all out to win the group for me. Not just the home advantage but the lack of travel and time away from the camp. Add to that avoiding the winners of group F and Italy until the final, and the boost that a good performance and result would give the fans and players.

Are we good enough to win the group is the main question for me?

All been very silent on this, but we’re through whatever happens, just depends on 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Croatia can’t finish above us as they can only draw level on 4 pts but would be below us on the head to head.

Re: EUROS group qualification
Same format as 90 World Cup that went on to be a good one.
My proposal would be to just have 4 groups of 4 but to maintain 4 knock out rounds I'd have all 4 teams in each group qualify
Where you finish in the group determines how hard a path to the final you have.
This would encourage teams to play attacking football in the group's without fear of going out which leads to the cagey negative football
Teams would then be in full flow for the knockout phase and you would still need to win 4 straight games to become champions.
Sometimes you have to think outside the box which is what I'm good at and this format would be a winner for everyone

My proposal, and this would be ground breaking and would benefit the game no end, is to leave stuff alone, stop meddling with everything.

Re: EUROS group qualification
So 3 teams out of 4 go through, and still Scotland somehow manage to find a way to get eliminated, old habits clearly die hard for them.

Re: EUROS group qualification
Yes but even so it's actually harder to get eliminated than it is to qualify, and yet they still couldn't manage to escape the groups, and that's with the benefit of 2 games at Hampden added to the mix.
Realistically they'll never have a better chance of finally going beyond the groups, and if they can't manage it this time then you do wonder if they'll ever manage it.

They’ll be writing songs to regale their grand-children about the night they got a 0-0 at Wembley.tiger76 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 10:41 pmYes but even so it's actually harder to get eliminated than it is to qualify, and yet they still couldn't manage to escape the groups, and that's with the benefit of 2 games at Hampden added to the mix.

Re: EUROS group qualification
Some of the more enlightened Scottish commentators and fans have quite rightly questioned why they played out of their skins in London, yet in their 2 games at Hampden they were fairly lacklustre, and they do have a valid argument, for some reason in the Scottish psyche they always raise their game when facing the auld enemy, and then revert to type when they play other teams.minnieclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 11:42 pmThey’ll be writing songs to regale their grand-children about the night they got a 0-0 at Wembley.
England were dire last Friday, but I've already erased that game from my memory, and at least England still have the chance to make amends and progress in the tournament, whereas Scotland are yet again packing their bags early.
