Was he the ex boxer? Once saw him while playing pitch and putt at Lytham. My mate told me who he was. We didn’t have a go at him about his slow play

Re: Only saw him once
Erskine v London is the first boxing I remember, also recall London fighting Cooper a bit later (Richardson was the 4th member of the 4 that dominated the scene for a few years). My dad was into his boxing and used to listen on the radio when fights were on. London was sometimes known as "The Blackpool Rock"; I believe he was born in the north east in a boxing family but moved to Blackpool in his teens.
One of his bouts v Richardson was a real brawl- as much after the official fight as during, this is a terrific watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCr519c ... Path%C3%A9

And the Band played on.... 007 club popular in the Seventies not much trouble there...that was reserved for " Jenks " Bar in town or "Diamond Lils" South Shore.

Re: Only saw him once
It's great action. I also like the understated commentary- especially at the end where it's said that London may get himself on "the wrong side of the Board of Control". I presume he (and family) got into a fair bit of trouble for piling in.

West Ham players went to his club the night before a game at Blackpool that they thought was going to be called off due to a frozen pitch. They had a late one and the match went ahead and they got thumped 4.0.

Tim, not only a gum shield needed in diamond lils but a torch would have been handy too, like walking into a cave!

Great character , always reminded me of Tommy Cooper for some reason , RIP
Re: Only saw him once
My first ever match was a pre season friendly at Bloomfield Road v Blackburn as a 4 year old dressed in a full Blackpool kit.
Brian London turned round to my dad at half time and told him to get me on the pitch as I couldn't be any worse than what he'd seen so far.

Re: Only saw him once
Well that's a coincidence. I only saw him once and it was on pitch and putt at Lytham. Seemed a nice guy with a nod and smile for anyone going past.1968claret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 9:15 pmWas he the ex boxer? Once saw him while playing pitch and putt at Lytham.
